Hurkey Creek - Idyllwild - Trail, Idyllwild, California

DESCRIPTION

First 3 miles is a steady up hill with some rock sections. Then you have 2 miles of single track that is rolling through hills and a long meadow. The next 1/2 mile is a fire road that you take to a large oak tree and then you have about 3 miles of downhill single track that takes you through all types of terrain. 1/2 mile of rocky technical uphill, then 1 mile of downhill singletrack to a 50 yard hike-a-bike section. From the top you have a 1 mile boulder/singletrack technical section. The trail brings you back around to the Hurkey Creek campgrounds.

I love this trail. I do the 24 hour race here and it is a blast. It's the best race course I've ever ridden, and so much fun just as a weekend ride. Great scenery, some tough technical climbs and fast sketchy downhills. There's about 1400 feet or so of climbing in about a nine mile loop. It has just about every element of mountain biking you could ask for. Just hope that the bridges are up for the water crossings.

I rode this in the 24 hour relay race in April this year. This trail has a wide range of riding and is changeling. I heard that it was far more groomed this year than last. The "hike a bike" near the end was not a problem to ride up (soft sand and pick your route through the rocks0. I did not get off at all other than "the rock", I missed the approch 1/2 the time. Over all this is the best trail I have ridden. Steep uphills, fast sweepers, a couple small drops, stay alert downhill, and even a small water crossing. If 9 miles is too short, do it again. I did 5 laps in the 24 hour relay, kicked my butt.

Customer Service

I just followed the trail in the race, so no recommended detours.

I rode this trail for the 24 Hours of Adrenaline race back in September and absolutely loved it! It pretty much has it all: steady climbs, long straights, technical DH's, butt kicking climbs, and some fast decents. It even has "The Rock;" a large boulder that, unless navigated correctly, will have you jumping off your bike for a short hike-a-bike section. All in all it's a great trail, I only wish it wasn't 2+ hours away from where I live. Four flaming poos in the aerobics category for the approximately 1500 feet of climbing in a 9 mile loop. Four poops for difficulty as it can kick your butt depending upon the type of rider you are.

Customer Service

I've only done the main route but I didn't see a whole lot of places to veer off into.

We do a group ride on this trail at least once per month and it is one of the best all around trails I have seen as it offers good climbing, fun singletrack and some technical riding. It is at about 5500 feet so the first time you will be winded, but not as bad as when you rtide in the Big Bear area. The down hill is GREAT! there are jumps and all the curves you could wish for in a singletrack ride. Watch out for loose dirt in places.

Have fun!

Customer Service

The trail is well marked and is used once a year a the 24 hour race. Check with the ranger station when you drive in on further details.

What a VERY fun trail! The description is perfect, except that you didn't mention how beautiful this area is. Much of the first part of the ride is shaded and through an alpine forest. The meadow is lovely, and the exposed areas up top are more deserty. A little bit of everything.

Customer Service

Just like it's described.

I did this loop last year while racing at the 24 hrs. of Adrenaline. It is a great route. All the comments are correct. Lots of fun, specially at night!! Enjoy it and keep it clean!! Watch out your speed in the downhill after the second long climb, there are some sharp turns that are waiting for you like sharks, ready to bite.

Customer Service

Same as described. I am planning a trip within the next 2 weeks to explore other trails in the area.

Absolutely AWESOME!! Very fun, with all types of terrain! Downhill is memorable and leaves you wanting more. Did 24-hours of Adrenalin race there this year.

Customer Service

Omit the "hike-a-bike" portion and take the left fork instead.

First time I rode it, got the map from the front kiosk, and followed the directions. Found a technical section where the hike-a-bike is indicated, but didn't actually have to get off the bike.
Very fun trail, good workout due to elevation.
If you want:
FUN- do route as described, CLOCKWISE. Ride it twice, it's worth it!
TEST OF SKILL- do route COUNTERCLOCKWISE. It will test your technical uphill climbing ability.
Ride on.

Customer Service

Route as described- ask people at the front kiosk if unsure, they are very helpful.

I rode this trail for the 24 hour race and it was great. I went back there this last weekend and the trail was amazing. I couldnt belive how good of shape the trail is in. The dirt is nice and moist giving great traction, and all of the sections of trail that were getting eroded have been patched up. Also, there has been an addition of jumps to the down hill sections, must have been at least 10 jumps that werent there when i did the 24 hour race last year. If your not a jumper dont wory. they are all very small but still alot of fun when going really fast. Every thing else is pritty much the same. An awsome trail that is perfect for taking a newer rider to but still able supply the best rider with plent of fun, Quiet possably one of the funnest trails on the planet.

This is a great trail. I have done two 24 hour races on this course and ridden it many times. It starts with a middle ring climb that gets mini- technical in a couple of parts. Then you get to recover on a fun little downhill. It then goes through a real pretty meadow that is more work than it seems. That brings us to the second climb which is steeper than the first but not as long. This is followed by a fast and fun downhill. Alas, the third climb is upon you and just kills ya! But then comes the fun and semi-technical downhill which is just plain bitchin'. Follow the asphalt road to the campground where you started from.

Customer Service

From Diego take 15 north to the first 79 and exit. follow 79 to Anza and veer left onto 371. Turn Rt. into Hurkey Creek St. Park.
