Grapevine Trail - TRAIL

Grapevine Trail - Trail, Gilroy, California

Ride up Coit Road (fire road) approx. 4 miles (mostly rolling with occasional short steep sections) to intersection of Coit Road and Cross Canyon Trail (east) Grapevine Trail (west) go right onto Grapevine trail. Trail splits after about 100', stay left and follow 0.3 miles to Coit Spring Road. Go left about 0.1 mi to Grapevine trail again. Go right for 1.2 miles downhill, This is the best section of the trail. This is one of the most technical sections of singletrack I've found in Coe, it reminds me of Santa Barbara backcountry trails. At the bottom (Grapevine Spring) you can either go right on Grapevine Road (if you are tired or short on time) back to the Coit Road, then go left and return to your vehicle or if you want to ride a bit more, I suggest instead taking a left up Anza Trail and following it 1.7 miles or so to Cullen Trail 1.2 miles up over the small hill to Grizzly Gulch Trail go right 0.8 miles and back down to Spike Jones trail go right again for 0.2 miles back to Coit Road for 0.1 miles. This route brings you right back to the south entrance of the park with the least amount of fireroad riding possible. If you are looking for something different to ride in Coe, this is a fun and semi-challenging loop with a relatively easy climb and some great singletrack downhill sections. (mileage #'s are approx. based on topo map of park)

Grapevine trail is super fun and one of the more technical sections of singetrack I've found in Coe park. It has some really tight corners and brief sections of rock gardens and a few very small (>1') drop-offs. I only wish the trail was bit longer because it such a blast. The climb up Coit Road is really not too bad with only occasional and short steep sections, for the most part it is a nice fairly shallow grade. Overall this trail is really fun but in order to get a "complete" ride you might want to add to the loop by doing some other trails in the vicinity such as Cullen Trail, Anza Trail and Grizzly Gulch Trail.

Ascend Coit Road up 4 miles to Grapevine trail, descend to Grapevine springs. Decide at this point whether you want to head back to the car or ride more. If you want to head back go right down the fir road back to south park entrance. If you want to ride more I recommend going left up Anza trail to either Cullen Trail to Grizzly Gulch to Spike Jones trail or just take Anza all the way back to the fire road and back to the south park entrance. I highly recommend purchasing one of the parks great "plastic" topographical maps. They are incredibly detailed and will give you a great idea of what's in store as far as elevation change etc. Some trails in Coe ascend as much as 1000' vertical in about 1 mile! Bring lots of water (100oz) and be sure to start your ride properly hydrated.
