South Ridge - TRAIL

South Ridge - Trail, Fontana, California

at the beginning of the trail, its very very technical, first you have to ride all the way up to the hill, and there is alots of side burms, alots of technical areas, then you go downhill and thats where its the most technical area of the whole trail, very rocky and extreme downhill (if you wanna die). its about a 4-5 mile trail all around the hill. Take care and ride this one you will love it.

This is the place where mountain biking meets the ghetto. Spray painted rocks which act as trail markers compete with all the other graffiti for your attention. I ride to get away from the urban squalor. This trail is to mountain biking what New York stickball is to Yankee stadium.

I came about this course through the xc races they have here. The race route is about seven miles. The climbs are steep and the descents are pretty technical. There is a lot of flat fire road especially along the last few miles. There are some very sandy sections on the course too. It is not the most aesthetically pleasing course, but it is fun. Easily done in under an hour.

Donnie started these trails back before all the homes. Back in the day when it was knowen as "the bird farm". thanks Donnie. In one way it gets better all the time, the trails are spiffyed up for the races. Thanks Donnie. I love this place and lucky for me it is only crowded during the races. There is nothing death-defying out here, but parts are pretty technical. Lots of loose dry dirt and big rocks. The summery says 4 or 5 miles but there is much more here. If you can clean everything out here you can ride just about anywhere.

Would some of you please go back to riding the top of the hill closest to the park! It used to be the best part, but just because it is such a hard climb and has such a killer downhill nobody goes there anymore. Even if you have to walk the whole thing, it's worth the trip to see what some people can ride.

its not a long loop or anything but it's really technical...there are big rocks, deep ruts, challenging climbs, even more challenging downhills and even a stretch of sand...i'm pretty much a beginner, i'm not one who can haul @ss on this course, not yet anyway...you really need to pick a good line coming downhill...if you're not that great technically stay away from the technical downhills, you'll mostly likely hurt yourself...for those of you that are technically sound and crazy, i think you'll love South Ridge

Customer Service

theres a bunch of downhill trails that end up at the same place...try 'em all...you might be able to follow some little red arrows that point out the x-country course...i think the DH courses start a small hike above the water tank

If you start from the lot, you'll go on a fireroad north until you hit a trail going up. It's technical and steep but can be done by intermediate level folks. Keep going up until you hit the downhill section, which is pretty technical but amazingly fun. If you like technical stuff, this is one of the best place around these parts; can't say enough about how fun it was. Just take it easy because if you fall going to fast, you can hurt yourself. Can be done by intermediate level person. Once you get down, you'll hit the road that takes you up to the watertank. You can head back but there is a lot more on the other side of this road. So take it up to the watertank and find the trail around it and go exploring. It's a great place. You'll kind of pay on the uphills but the downhills are more than worth it.

Directions: off 10, get off on sierra ave; then go north; at jurupa ave. turn right; go for about a mile until live oak ave.; turn left; leave your car at the park (I didn't get the name) in the lot on your left. you will see the start of the trail from the lot.

Southridge, as a loop, is a great workout. It's a anerobic climb-fest and has enough singletrack to keep you interested. Unfortunately, it's smack dab in the middle of gang territory, transient camps, and enough broken glass to down a Humvee. The only real reason to ride there is when there's to much snow in the mountains, or if there's a race going on. Other than that, I can't really say it's worth doing (Unless your'e from East LA or Compton, and then it would be a step up...)

Customer Service

Same as everyone else has mentioned.

DH Racing: Props to Donnie, the promoter, and Mark on course design. Short course (often sub-3 minute pro), with lots of sandy singletrack, hardpack, rock sections, corners and pedalling. Several 'courses', and usually a different one is used every time. Makes a good training race. About 600' elevation drop. The courses have been getting steadily better over the last few years. They are actually challenging now (moderately), but they have always been fun. Basically cheap, close, fun racing with your friends. Good vibe, and good So Cal off-season action. Although some guys take it a little too seriously. Mammoth it's not, but it get's a turnout of several hundred people every other week for a reason.

$20 entry fee, awards 5 deep, small plaques instead of cheesy medals for awards, NORBA license NOT required. There is a shuttle truck for rider transport at the Sunday race, which includes a 2 hour practice session starting around 11:00 (be in line before then). Race starts at 1:00 or 1:30, except when it's a two-run format (usually race is a single run). Many people go out Saturday to practice. Many push up the hill, but pickup-truck shuttles are common. No shuttles are allowed on Sunday (push or wait for truck) so there wont be traffic crossing the DH and XC courses.

XC Racing: 7 mile loop or so, with more laps for the higher classes. Some steep climbs, and lots of twisty singletrack. Can get hot. XC race is on Sunday also, but early in the morning to beat the heat.

XC and DH courses are on undeveloped land and available to ride anytime. However they may lock the gate controlling access to the upper part of the DH SHUTTLE during the week (so you might have to push).

Alternate to 10 fwy is 60 fwy. I-60 exit Country Village go North, turn right on Jurupa (then a few stops thru residential), and right at the shopping center / park. Staging on the right in the park under the big trees. 60 is often less crowded than 10, particularly West-bound in the aft/eve with the Vegas, CO River, etc. traffic after Sunday's race.

The trail is hella kick ass. You might ecounter Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) and you might start to tremble or feel really week because of the steep climb at the very beginning, so make sure you get some food and some protein bars with u so u can energize urself up there. If any of you would like to ride with me, email me at aciddropii@msn.com . It gets boring if u are riding alone.
