Alchemist - TRAIL

Alchemist - Trail, Fairfax, California

Switchback singletrack. This is an entrance point of Tamarancho trails at the Boy Scout camp outside of Fairfax. Going uphill it has many switchbacks that tests your climbing ability. Going downhill it tests your agility ability. Buy a pass online at http://www.boyscouts-marin.org/camps/fot.htm or at Sunshine bikes in Fairfax. This is one of the few Marin LEGAL singletrack areas. Support the ride!

Not sure why these trails are listed as "Advanced". Probably would consider these trails as "Intermediate". Very smooth, some roots and rocks; the folks that do the trail upkeep are doing a good job (maybe too good?). Single Speed friendly; you wouldn't need to be out of middle ring on a geared bike. Nice ~10mi loop, although one loop was a little short so we ended up tacking other trails to make it a decent ride. If staying within the park, two loops at ~20mi (once at CW and then CCW) would be great.

I purchased my pass at the Sunshine bike shop this morning. It was a short spin from town to the trailhead. After I studied the map handout, I ended up going clockwise at the trail head on
"Alchemist" and followed the map to make a complete loop around the park. The coolest thing about this ride was all the different types of terrain. All single trak, most was hardpack with a lot of imbeded rocks and tree roots that made it a challenge going up.A lot like the trails in Auburn. The "Wagon Wheel "trail had great views looking west.My favorite part was the desent on "B-17".You go from riding out in the open into a fast loamy redwood forest.Reminded me alot of the Santa Cruz area. You can really pick up your speed though here. Some narrow skethcy spots so be on your toe's.This was a great weekday ride,I did it in under 2 hours.Weekend are probably real busy.I did run into several riders going in the opposite direction. These riders need to be aware that they should signal to oncoming bikes how many are in their group,solo,1 back,2 back.As there is not a good line of site around most turns and at speed a head on it probable..

I was in the Bay area on business and several locals highly recommended this area. It's great - with picturesque views are well built trails. Make sure your low gear works and bring a camera for some great shots.

Customer Service

Go to the scouts website and print off the map while you're printing off your pass. Stick to the single track parts.

This is an awesome example of switchbacks that will gauge your technique. Try not to dab or fall over--definitely not for the newbie. You traverse through oaks, madrones and some redwoods. In the summer it is shaded and cool. I like to ride this and the rest of the Tamarancho loop clockwise!

Customer Service

This is the entrance from downtown Fairfax to the Tamarancho singletrack loop. It is actually a spur that leads to the loop.
