South Coast Ridge Road - TRAIL

South Coast Ridge Road - Trail, Big Sur, California

15 miles of strenuous riding on a ridge top fire road. Beautiful views. On a clear day you can see the Sierras to your left and the Big Sur coastline to your right. Go in late fall through early spring. Summer heat is extreme. The road goes right over all the ridge tops so there is some hard climbing to be done. The best part is the end. Exit the ridge at Los Burros aka Willow Creek Road for 8 miles of down hill from 3000' to the ocean. There are some residences up there so watch for cars. The Pit Bull will chase you but doesn't bite. At the ocean, ride on the highway south 1 mile to the little town of Gorda and pick up your other car to shuttle back up to the drop off point. Don't even think of riding back up to your car unless your Lance.

Unreal, expedition-type riding. If you start from Ventana, it takes a while to get to the ridge, but once you're up there, it's a different world. Watch for angry squatters. The road is a public road, however, maintained by the BLM or Forest Service, I think. Take lots of water, food and tools, because if you break down, you're stuck. Don't be tempted by the side hiking trails that branch off...most are unrideable after a few hundred feet, plus they're illegal.

I think this is the same road...park at Ventana Inn, ride around the last gate then up a long, grindy climb. Once you getto the top, it's the ridge road. You'll want to shuttle.

If you are riding up past Ventana Inn, you are most definately NOT on BLM land, the Pit bull may not bite, but the homeowners sure as hell will. Please take note of the posted no-trespass signs and do not blaze your own path. Not much legal riding in the Big Sur area, try & stick to the trails which have been designated "open" for biking!
