Berkeley through Tilden loop - Trail, Berkeley, California

Berkeley through Tilden loop - Trail, Berkeley, California

DESCRIPTION

At this point you'll see a hill to the east right above the Steam Trails with lots of antennae on it called Vollmer Peak; it's a little higher than Grizzly Peak and about 1/2 mile east of it. Ride past the Steam Trains parking up the gated paved road towards Vollmer. Ride around Vollmer until you get a good view of Mt Diablo (people fly miniature airplanes here alot). Don't bother to summit unless you like checking out radio transmitters. This is the top of your ride -- put on your windbreaker and helmet! Continue down this ridgetop going North towards Inspiration Point. This is Dog Run -- or, I think, 'Seaview Trail'. It's a fire road that bikes are permitted on. It'll swoop down and up and down again, some ruts on the road. Stay on ridgetop, eventually the road will drop into some pine trees, make a couple of big switch backs, and you're down at road next to Inspiration Point. Cross the road, ride down a little 1/4 mile of single track (maybe forbidden, in which case ride around it to the east or walk your bike down it). There's a 4 way intersection, go north (straight) through the intersection from the trail. This is a road lower than the Nimitz road that runs parallel to it through Tilden. It takes you around to the Pony Rides. From here ride follow the signs to Berkeley, you'll ride up a steep climb to Grizzly Peak rd and Spruce St. At this point I usually ride up Grizzly to Euclid and down Euclid. Not technical, but a good workout!

There are two trail systems in Tilden that are each nice 3-3.5 mile loops. Overall fairly easy, wide fire roads with a couple of more technical challenging downhills (or climbs depending on which way you start). Nice 15-60 minute juants depending how fast you climb. Nive views, but not very challenging on the bike, other than the steep climbs (or short descents) on either Sea View or the Quarry Trail.

park at the Lone Oak trailhead. Head east on Meadows Canyon, last short and steep ascent gets you to Curren. Bomb down the hill to Wildcat Gorge and sprint back to the trailhead ~ 3 miles.
Or, park off Wildcat Canyon Road at the Quarry Trailhead. Go south ~ 1 mile on Quarry to the 2/3 mile nasty climb. Sprint down Seaview back to the trailhead...or make a left on Big Springs Trail to loop around again.
These 2 loops are joined by a singletrack that veers left off the Curran Trail and crosses Wildcat Canyon Rd.

It's a cross country haven... Wide fire roads with some fun downhills but nothing too technical. Beginner to intermediate level.

Climb from downtown to Volmeer Peak via Grizzly Peak Boulevard. Go down the Sea View trail, the take the hairpin left to the bigsprings. Ride through the quarry and then road to Inspiration Point. Then ride down the meadows, climb Wildcat Gorge, then down Wildcat Gorge. Climb the Meadows up, then ride Nimitz til paved becomes asphalt. Take the hairpin left and ride conlon. Turn left on Wildcat Canyon and decide if you want to do it again or ride Havey Canyon or that other trail towards El Sobrante...

Saw this trail reviewed so decided to give it a go when I was up in the area. Beginner trails, wide fire roads, overall rather boring. It would be a good area to train for 24hr events, since you can rack up a ton of miles on dirt, with a good amount of climbing. But otherwise, talk to some local LBS and find some better trails if you really want to use your MTB.

Customer Service

I entered from Spruce St. and read the whole area (lots of miles with little excitement).

The highlight of following this route is the challenging climb that keeps going up in difficulty, then the best view in tilden when it's done.
(Winding up the loose rock of seaview is fun.)
The golf course descent is what you make it- you can hit some fast speeds and one section gets scary if you hit it with momentum.
A great 9 mi loop to do repeatedly and shave your time.

Customer Service

The first guy did it backwards!
1) start at the bottom of Nimitz- a good gradual uphill
2) head right on wildcat cyn- start up seaview on the left
3) after seaview head right on grizzly peak, then down south park dr.
4) Get on Golf Course Tr on left- signs to "Gillespie Youth Camp"-- ride it out till you get to Golf Course Dr.
