I rode up to The top about 6 weeks ago & had to go try it again!...I had forgotten how hard it was for me! It seemed tuffer this time! heh-heh! Glad I did it. The road seemed a little looser than it was just 6 weeks ago which makes sense with no rain to pack the dirt down. ALSO it was graded around the Henningar Flats section which made it looser.

I rode the part from the bridge to Henninger flats yesterday (May 8, 2006). There is only one REALLY big land slide in the beginning of the trail. Although there is a narrow route which goes through it. Once you passed it, the road is totally rideable all the way to Henninger flats (there is another small land slide right before the flats, but if you make through the big one, it's not even worth mentioning.)
It looks like the road is being used by quite a few hikers. It's amazing to see how everything looks overgrown and abandoned, when it wasn't heavily used for around 2 years.

Since the gate is still closed, you have to go through the Eaton canyon park, please try not to annoy a lot of hikers and dog walkers, since technically biking is not allowed there. You can also walk it all the way to the start if you'd like to be nice.

You wanna get your butt Kicked? Leave Monrovia. Ride (road) to the toll road gate. Up to henniger. Up to Wilson. Down the Rim Trail (closed but passable to Newcome saddle. Out the Rincon road to the Sawpit (monrovia Canyon and Dam Road) back to your car. Took me 6 hours. 5 hours riding. Long and wonderful!

this trail is a long 10 mile grind to the top. if you aren't ready for such a long ride, you can ride the first 3 miles till you get to Henniger Flats campground (this is what most people do). the first 3 miles however are the steepest. this ride should be attempted only if you are in good shape. it is by no means an easy ride. the whole ride is on a fireroad. once you get passed henniger flats, you have put the steepest sections behind you, but you have another 7 miles of unrelenting climbing to do. there are very few places that offer you a break and the are short breathers at best. it gets fairly rocky when you get closer to the top. the best thing about this trail is the beautiful view you get of the city down below, of course it better be a clear day or you will see only a lot of smog. this trail feels great to be able to accomplish so you can say you climbed the 10 miles to Mount Wilson, but it isn't all that exciting. the downhill run afterwards is pretty fun because you seldom get to bomb down 10 miles of fireroad at a time. if you love to climb this is the trail for you. if you like long downhills and don't mind climbing to do it, this is the trail for you. if you don't like to climb, you can get dropped of on top, but i won't tell you how because i believe you have to work for your thrills.

Idylehour is a great singeltrack to ride. it is off the wilson toll road. it is probably another mile pass henniger flats. it is a great singletrack down, but remember you have to climb out of there, and it is a good strenuous climb. it is absolutely beautiful in there though

2.7 miles and 1200 feet above the starting point at Pinecrest dr. is Henniger flats. This is a campground area, with a very park like setting. Lots of Trees within the camp area. Barbecue facilities and restrooms available. You'll need to check in with the forest service personnel in the campground proper before you camp. There isn't a lot of chaparal or cover while climbing to Henniger Flats campground due to the fire storms of 1993. Scores of houses were scorched in the area. It's going to be hot in the summer months. Climbing out of Henniger flats turn, turn right at the first junction. Turning left will take you towards the helipad above. At mile 3.5 the grade eases up a bit. At mile 4.00 you will see the Idle Hour trail head. The recommended route is from Mount Lowe and exit here. Around mile 5, you reach a summit. Mile 7.6, you reach the Winter Creek Trail heads with connections to Mount Wilson Trail and Henniger Flats. Mile 9-9.5 you reach Mount Wilson Skyline Park. If you are lucky, you might see Hanggliders taking off from here on a clear day.

Have fun!

Rode this "trail" just once. Made it to the observatory and thought to myself.... Why did I do this? What a waste! The ride down wasn't much better.... I.e. lots of hikers on the lower section so you can't open it up and really slide through the turns. Oh well, I guess a bad day on a trail is better than the best day at work.

The only possible recommendation for this trail would be as a training ride for something more interesting. It is a hard climb!!! but not very interesting.
