MT Lowe Trail - Trail, Altadena, California

MT Lowe Trail - Trail, Altadena, California

DESCRIPTION

This trail has all the components for a great ride. 5.5 miles of fireroad climbing, 4.5 miles of great death- defying singletrack that will show you how good your brakes really are! You start at the fireroad gate and climb 5.1 miles (keep bearing right)to Mt. Lowe campground. Another .3 miles takes you to the "Y". You'll find the Merrill trailhead on the right at the "Y". 2.9 miles later you arrive at Echo Mountain. Take a minute and ride over to the old hotel ruins. Ride back to the Merrill trail and you'll see the Echo Mt. trail, take this trail, 1.5 miles back to the fireroad. DO NOT ride the Merrill trail down the canyon, it is not reccommended for mountainbikes. Once at the fireroad, ride downhill for about a hundred feet and you'll see the Sunset trail on the right. About a mile further, you will see the fireroad again. Continue on the Sunset trail which will end one mile further at the lower portion of the fireroad. Take the fireroad down to the gate and your car. The total is around 11 - 12 miles. I don't know for sure as I lost my odometer when I crashed in the poison oak! Have fun, the singletrack is a kick...

Tried to access the upper trail from Eaton Saddle and the road is completely washed out on the other side of the tunnel, had to turn around and forget it.

Ive only ridden this up from the Echo Mnt Connector, (where it turns into dirt) and man! its a fun ride up! Its pretty easy going the whole way up to Middle Merrill, even Mt.Lowe/Upper Merrill. Some spots have rocks and boulders in the trail from the staion fire, but its not that bad, just the trees around u are burnt. (trail is still open). Ive been on this 3 times now, and even though i climbed the steep singletrack up Echo Mnt. I still have enough energy to cruise right along the fireroad.. Never takin it going down though, that should be a great FAST ride!

Started @ Millard, up lower Sunset ST to pavement. Up pavement and down Sunset and back to Millard.
I use to really love this trail and rode it about once a week, at least. I haven't been on Sunset in about a year and man, has it changed. The only thing it's missing is the ice and you can have a full on luge course, burms and all. The break ruts are so deep it's ridiculous. You can’t help but to ride in it. Gone are the days where you have to navigate and try to find clean lines. This trail has been taken over and completely abused. It used to be such a fun and technical trail. What more can you say and what hasn't been already said?

What an effin shame!!!

Trial is easy...stop being a wuz over some little debree here and there....this is what make mtb great....otherwise, go circle around the rosebowl... Been riding these trials for 8 years and so many kooks have really made a dent... Spooking every one on blind cornes and being total %#@'s. This is what will get these places closed for everyone!! So now, the good trails my friends and I find don't get posted anywhere....Just tired of all these weekend freaks with no respect for the terrain or fellow riders....Ride on!!

Fire road going up to the tunnel is completly gone in some sections thx to the rains - I have never seen the fire road wash away like it did. Mt.Lowe single is in pretty bad shape in some sections, one slip and it's sucks to be you time or u just die. Upper Sam Merril is ok as always not much rain damage. Middle Sam Merril is also in pretty BAD shape thx to the rains but the section before the hotel ruins is full of rocks and obstacles which makes it pretty fun. Sunset kicks ass as always, just wash out for the hikers and missing parts of the trail. Good riding, be kind to hikers, avoid the hunters, drug traffickers and bodyparts that you may come upon on these sweet trails.

This ride is the cat's ass. Some peeps might have issues with the climb up, but coming down is worth the suffering. The view at the top is sick and when you're all rested, Gu'd, and watered it's happy time. This is pretty much what the downhill is like: singletrack, cliff sides, rock gardens, roots, hiker stairs/step down jumps, switch backs and more single track. Depending how far you go up, the D-drop can be anywhere from 3 to 9 miles according to some people. Dirty sick fun!

The single track trail head that drops from the old hotel site back doun onto the top of lake is located two thirds of the way between the fire road and the hotel site. However, this section of world class single track was damaged quite badly in the fires a few years. Because of this fire damage, the trail is now much more technical than in the past but it is also much slower.

Customer Service

Grind up the fire road in the center chain ring (this will give you a great worm-up burner) plow onward to the old hotel site and take the time to read the posted history signs. I have done the sunset trail doun about 10 times and have also gotten posin oak each time..This rout is a good tecno single track that I would rate as a medium level cruzer. However I feel the better rout is the single that drops from the hotel sight back down to the top of Lake Ave.

Once you climb the Mt.Lowe Fireroad from Chaney trail. It will be a 2.6 mile climb to the junction of Echo Mountain trail. This .05 mile trail to Echo Mountain is what the previous reviewer describes as the old hotel.

The Lower Sam Merril trail or Echo Mountain trail which leads to Lake Ave in 2.5 miles has been worked on by hire private contractors by the forest service. The only technical nature of this trail is avoiding a collision w/ a hiker if you are on idiot and not falling off the trail because it is very narrow. They have removed the embedded rocks along the trail and it is now so easy! It's still a gruelling climb to Echo Mountain if you opt to climb up this trail.

*** While on the trail, please observe a self imposed 7-10 mph speed limit due to the narrow trail and numerous blind section. If you haven't noticed already, this trail is very popular especially with the Sierra Club ***

Incredible views! The singletrack in this area is VERY techinical. Do NOT bring your friends who are beginners. It is not only too technical for beginners, but far too dangerous -- alot of exposure, some extremely narrow arrows with cliffs on one side and solid granite on the other. Countless water bars (10" to 3' drops). If you are an experienced rider (more than "intermediate"), you'll LOVE this place! It handles the rain pretty well. Since it's mostly decomposing granite, there is virtually no mud. A fantastic ride for the EXPERIENCED rider.

I have no idea -- I just followed the guys who knew where they were going.

mt. lowe road just sucks to climb. granted it is pavement so that makes it a little easier, but it is steep. middle sam merrill is an awesome singletrack and it has had work done on it so it is easier to ride than years past, but it is still very technical. lots of rocky terrain, but the payoff is a beautiful view of the san gabriel valley. sunset ridge is a very technical singletrack. it is definitely not for the beginner. lots of drop offs and very tight switch backs. it is an awesome singletrack to ride. it makes el prieto look like disneyland. conditions on the trail are great right now. there are a few big ruts caused by numbnuts skidding they're way around the coirners, but nonetheless great conditions. lots of poison oak!!!!

Customer Service

try riding up the sam merrell trail if and only if you are an experienced rider. the climb is grueling and dangerous because of the exposure.
