Big Fork Athens Trail - TRAIL

Big Fork Athens Trail - Trail, Mt. Ida, Arkansas

Super intense uphill climbs (6 total I believe and you'll be hiking it) and labor intensive, white knuckle downhills (major crash potential).

Steep as a cows face.

Customer Service

The nearest town to this trail is not Mt Ida, Glenwood, or even Glen Rose. The little town of Athens is bout 15 min form the south end trail head. Athens has a couple general stores which you can buy gas and food. I wouldn't count on many camping supplies but the best home-made fried pies you have ever had. The north-end trail head is closest to Langley. They also have a general store and even a post-office.

This trail is actually closer to the City of Glenrose then Mount Ida really a cool trail I don't know why more folks do not ride it.

This is the most difficult single track as well as the steepest in all of Arkansas to my understanding. This trail is not for the timid. Some of the downhills are very steep and rocky. I was pretty well sitting on my back wheel and felt like I was going to get bucked off in some sections. I just grabbed both brakes and held on for the ride. The downhills will wear you out almost as much as the uphills. I don't care if you are or think you're Superman...you're going to hike your bike up some of these hills. The rest of the trails on the Eagle Rock Loop are pleasant compared to this one. Let the park ranger know you completed the loop and they will send you a patch.

Customer Service

Either direction is just as difficult. This is the hardest part of the Eagle Rock Loop (27 miles).

Similar Products Used: The Eagle Rock Loop consists of: Athens-Big Fork, Viles Branch Trail, and the Little Missouri Trail. I'm not sure if it's called the Albert Pike Trail but there's another 2.5 mile section near the Alber Pike Rec area that's pretty hairy.

The last time I did this trail it took about 3 hours to complete. This is really a fun trail we always do what we call the Big Brush Heap loop. Involves this trail as well as Brush Heap Mountain, but this trail is by far the most demanding it has two of the steepest climbs I think I have ever seen in this state. The decents are short and fast an the trail requires some technical abilities. Beaware of the creek crossings in high water we went last time we went was in summer and the current was pretty swift in places. If you want a good workout and some great sceanery go ride this trail.

Customer Service

Go with the forementioned way this is about the funnest way.
