Trail 396 - TRAIL

Trail 396 - Trail, Prescott, Arizona

Meandering smooth singletrack that connects White Spar Road (Highway 89S) with Senator Highway. Across from the end of this trail on Senator Highway is Trail 299, but the first third of that trail is unridable due to extreme fall-line action and extremely loose rocks, so although 396 makes a nice "connection", it doesn't do you much good connecting to 299. Would have been better to connect to 307, Spruce Mtn.
Anyhow, it's an easy trail in terms of skill. It looks like it was made with a trail-dragon which is like a mini-bulldozer, so there aren't any technical aspects on the trail. There are no killer climbs, all the climbs are fairly short and the slopes are mild enough that I didn't have to use my travel adjust function. Skill level wise this is a beginner trail but some of the slopes will lend themselves to the intermediate level, because that will be encountered, I'll label it as intermediate but realize that it's not rocky or crazy steep, just moderatly steep and a few switchbacks at times. It's somewhat dissapointing to see that all the new trails that have been built in the last few years have been extremely watered down, because there isn't much technical riding in Prescott, and this trail is no exception to that. It can make a nice connector, and it will make a nice post-work ride due to decent coverage and elavation.

Fast and lazy. Nothing technical. Love the scenery.

Start at the white spar side of the trailhead. Ride 396 to senator highway. Turn right and turn left at spruce mountain road(about a mile). Climb up spruce mountain road for a great climbing workout. After about two miles, take a left on watershed trail 299. The descent is fast and sometimes technical. Take the trail back to senator highway and then back on 396.

My favorite trail in the area for it's scenery and fun factor. It may not be technical, but to start at the bottom (white spar camp ground) and ride up to Goldwater Lake just makes for a pretty ride. The ride back down is fun, fast, rolling single track. So fun and fast, it's easy to get carried away.

This is a great after work ride. Especially in the summer because it's in the pines. I'll often dunk my shirt in the lake to cool off. Too bad they don't allow swimming.

The 396 is at this point about six months old.
Today I was able to ride it with five other mountain bikers one of which was Rob Hehlen the designer of the 4.5 mile section of the trail.
Rob does alot of trail work here in the Prescott National forest and he told me today that there was 2000 people hours in the making of this trail.
To start your ride, begin at the White Spar campground parking lot and ride through up through the pines and oaks for a great workout. (the trail head is to your left of the first parking lot).
Once you get into the trail about two miles keep a lookout on your left foe four great views of Gold water lake. (don't miss it.)
The trail is kind of popular with all kinds of people so be careful of hikers on your way down.
The 396 is an out and back but there are many ways to make it into a loop.
Today, our group road up and then took the fellman trail back for a nice two hour loop.

The 396 is one of my favorites here in Prescott.

Start at the trail head at the White Spar Camp ground and head up all the way to Senator highway and then back down the 4.5 mile sweet single track.

Or just before you get to Senator Highway take a left onto the felman trail that will lead you back down to the trail head.

Smooth singletrack, no technical features. A few climbs but no steep or loose climbs, and none of the climbs are very extended.

Customer Service

Would probably be best to ride from White Spar Campground and ride on this trail and maybe some of the others that are in the area. Although this trail connects with 299, there isn't much point because you're going to hike-a-bike up 299 for a while, and there are other trails and routes that connect as well.

Similar Products Used: 307 (Spruce Mtn) is the closest one that I would recommend. There are others from White Spar that branch off from the campground/trails, but 307 has a lot more going on when it's not been too beat up by the horses.
