Trail 100 - Trail, Phoenix, Arizona

Trail 100 - Trail, Phoenix, Arizona

DESCRIPTION

Trail 100 is 22 miles of rolling fun. It is not tecnically difficult, but is very fun and fast. From Dreamy Draw you can head East or West. Both sections are fun, but the trail to the East is best.

This dude from Canada is soaking wet if he thinks there's no technical sections on this trail. Ride the western half and you'll find some rocky steps and hills that will work you over. After crossing past Dreamy Draw park headed east, things flatten out and you can wail on the pedals. Really fun! Stick to weekdays if you can't avoid the weekends. Watch out for horse packs near the 7th Street sections.

Customer Service

Start either at 40th Street trailhead (Tbird south on 40th to it's end) or at Mountain View Park on the west end. Ride all the way to the other end and back. 22 miles of body abuse.

I agree with the Canadian dude, this trail is not technical, but can be fun. This trail captures the true essence of Phoenix, smog, urban sprawl, the sound of traffic, crowds.

East end of trail offers lots of side loops. Turn left when you hit the big red mound, then pick another spur after the little climb. *Left goes down a dry wash and becomes tight twisty single track after crossing some of the main trail. *Right goes along the face of the little ridge, single track, a little technical (rocky). *I haven't been able to go through the intersection and continue up the ridge (Looks like tight singletrack, there seems to be a constant stream of hikers going up that way everytime I am there.)

West End of trail -- Watch for really cute guide leading horses (She's hot). Up and down, do the out and back to 7th ave for the most fun. On the way out, two serious (but short) climbs. One endo-possible spot on a steep down section. On the way back, one technical ego-checking climb (at endo-possible rock).

Customer Service

The trail is quite good, and right in Phoenix! Night riding in the summer is quite challenging. Weekends can be crowded with raudy youths and hikers. A great weekday ride. Some sections are technical, as you can see from MTB debri on the ground.

Customer Service

Park at Shaw Butte parking lot. Ride towards Dreamy Draw and back.

A decent trail to use for cardio training. But, don't expect to improve handling skills. It is FARRRRR from challenging. Monotonous is the word I'd used to desciribe this ride. Not really boring, but there is virtually no change in the terrain and/or scenery. I rode the entire trail (according to the maps, it is 10.7 miles each way) from 7th Avenue to Tatum and back for a total of just under 22 miles. There is one climb/descent of about 50 yards that is technical; other than that there are a few spots (a rut here, rocky section there) that are a challenge, but overall it is very, very far from "technical". I rode on a Saturday (May 15th) and was excpecting it to be mega-crowded. It wasn't. Yea, I passed numerous walkers/hikers, a few equestrians and some bikers -- but, it wasn't bad at all. A crowded trail in California has MANY, MANY more users. Note to "locals": THANKS for sharing this trail! I was very impressed with how nice and considerate ya all were. I received zero dirty looks or negative comments. I wish I'd made the drive to National.

Don't let the EXPERIENCED "TOO COOL" people tell you this trail is not technical and or is easy. Its relative to your skill. As a racer and frequent rider without an "I'm the king" Ego, I can tell you this trail has good climbs, is a bit rough and rocky and has sections that frequently pull people off the bike. I can go end to end, but I pass lots of people that need frequent breaks on this up and down trail. There are good rides everywhere, but this trail has a bit of everything and it's right in the heart of phoenix.

I've started riding my full on these trails since they are pretty rocky and I'm getting a little older. Trail 8 and 1A which cross 100 are pretty fun (technical)and have less folks on them. Best to ride here on the weekdays during nice weather as they can get crowded. You can ride for hours out here and never ride the same trail twice.

Customer Service

The whole trail has something for everybody. I have been riding and doing maintenance on this trail for 12 years so know every inch of it. I generally use trail 100 as access to all of the good loops over on the east half of the preserve. Get THE MAP Trails of East Phoenix for detailed rated trails of this area.

Pima and Dynamite is my current favorite and I've biked or hiked every trail in Phoenix at least once. There are trails at Pima and Dynamite that don't see tread for weeks.

I ride this trail about 3-4 times a week and consider it the third most important thing in my life (after my wife and my bike). It may be a bit tough in many sections for the novice biker, but the intermediates have the perfect opportunity to hone skills. Make sure to bring an extra tube/flat kit as the rocks and cactus thorns abound. Please stay on the trail. All riders must yield to other trail users, but everyone I have met has been courteous and polite. I rate this trail based on accessibility and fun, not necessarily difficulty.

Customer Service

Popular trailheads are Dreamy Draw, Cortez Rd, Tatum Rd., and 7th St. The trail basically travels Northwest to Southeast. All sections are fun. Most are moderately technical. The middle sections (between 7th St and Dreamy Draw) have some gutsy hills and a few technical challenges.
