Rocky Ridge - Trail, Flagstaff, Arizona

Rocky Ridge - Trail, Flagstaff, Arizona

DESCRIPTION

rocky ridge is a technical trail that paralels the Mt. Elden fire road, it will spit you out at the top of the lower oldham trail, and is much more fun than the road.

Rocky Ridge 2005; What was once (circa 2002) a worn out, rutted, boulder filled, brush covered trials course has been miraculously transformed into three miles of smiles or more accurately, "The People's Ridge" The trail had degraded to the point where even local pro riders chose to ride Elden Lookout Road to avoid it. Maybe 200 riders a summers stumbled through it before the restoration work and now usage is up to several thousand a summer. People of all abilities ride Rocky Ridge in both directions, down to and up from Schultz Creek Trail. Even the people who had complained about the restoration of Rocky Ridge now ride it regularly and really enjoy it. If you miss breaking your pedals and walking your bike a lot, keep an eye out for an upcoming review of "Forces of Nature Trail" aka "Son of Rocky Ridge" It's at least as difficult as the old Rocky Ridge and easy to access and leads to other great and challenging east-side trails.

Customer Service

Start at Buffalo Park and ride up Lower Oldham to Elden Lookout Road. Cross the road and begin the three mile ride down Rocky Ridge to Schultz Creek Trail. Head up Schultz and try our the Fort Valley Trail system, then return and ride up Rocky Ridge, but only two miles to the fist junction, where you can cross Elden Lookout Road and ride the Jump Trail back to Buffalo Park.

i made the mistake of taking my downhill bike up the trail from the parking lot. this trail if great for someone with maybe a lighter bike. the first half of the trail is a very good ascend but the highlight of the trail(at least for me on the 40 pound rig)was the fast descend at the end. this trail is great for the seasoned pro or someone just starting out.

Starting from the parking lot where schultz creek trail and rocky ridge trail converge is a great spot. I recommend riding the rocky ridge up (which mnost folk don't), and then hooking up wit the brook bank for a nice two mile r so climb. it's very satisfying, and the downhill ride on the schultz pass trail is a blast!! they should call it the "Hippie Roller Coaster"!

What was once the standard setter, the best technical challenge in Flag, has now been paved over and ruined as far as I'm concerned. With so many miles of buff nontechnical singletrack on Mt Elden, why they had to touch this one remains baffling and extremely frustrating. For their next project may I suggest putting chair lifts on the slick rock trail or perhaps getting rid of all those nasty trees, they only get in the way.

This trail was great. It has recently been cleared of rocks, however there were still a few sections that were rock gardens. The altitude is a killer. We road up the trail and then turned around at the second crossing of the fire road, then road the trail back down. This area is one of my favorites to ride.

Coming from New Orleans to this trail damn near killed me and my BMW. The downhill was off the hook, but the altitude almost snapped me. There were times at 7500' that I swore I was going to have an annurism. Just remember, on the way downhill leave your breaks alone.

This is some of the best fun you can have with your clothes on. Rocky ridge is loaded with little technical challenges.

This is the trail that anyone that is going clipless for the first time should come and try. Hee hee...this is one of the more technically challenging trails in the state. And what makes it even more beautiful is the fact that it is the best route to take you further up the mountain into the incredible network of trails that make up the area. Those that can clean the entire Rocky Ridge trail without a dab are the unknown trials gods/godesses that make Flagstaff the secret mecca it is!

Get on from the lower parking lot...be sure and sign the guest book at the trailhead

After cleaning RR, continue up the Elden road to lower oldhalm, (or is it brook bank?) I'm not a local, so I may not have the trail names correct...just keep riding till you get to the cattle guards and take a left. Climb, climb, climb the fairly steep swithcbacks and if you are in better shape then I you made it all the way to the meadow. or you're a bad ass, and kept going to the top of Elden for the best descent of your life. Either way, you eventually end up on the Schultz tank trail, built my MXers in the 70's. Fast, technical and banked, you now know what love is.
