Dead Horse Ranch State Park - Trail, Cottonwood, Arizona

Dead Horse Ranch State Park - Trail, Cottonwood, Arizona

DESCRIPTION

Despite its distinctive name, Dead Horse Ranch is situated amidst an abundance of life along the Verde River. A six-mile reach of the river is known as the Verde River Greenway. Its unique ecosystem, the Cottonwood / Willow riparian gallery forest, is one of less than 20 such riparian zones in the world. Life along the river changes with the seasons, giving visitors a glimpse of the numerous species of raptors, neotropical migrants, resident songbirds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.

The developed portion of Dead Horse Ranch State Park covers 423 acres. The 3,300 foot elevation accounts for the mild temperatures that are ideal for camping, mountain biking in the Coconino National Forest, hiking along the Verde River, canoeing, picnicking, fishing, or just wading in the cool water.

Camped just one nught here...wish it was more! I did not know about this trail so had no expectations. We started at Lower Raptor and worked our way up to the trial connection of Upper Raptor. That was a 5 mile, 1100 ft ascent. Yummy if you like riding over big rocks occassionally and the single track is slanted at points the lead to a downhill drop so I was somewhat "huhhing" the mountain. I ride a hard tail but would have been less of a beating with a dual suspension, but I liked the hard tial for the climbing aspect. The "decent" down Thumper contained a lot of variation of rocks, step down rocks. sand and grassy fields. My buddy and I took several breaks and when finished we rode 11.7 miles and climbed 1679 ft. I loved it and can't wait to get back out there.

If you want a full day of riding, you can do Lower Raptor to Upper Raptor, then decide if you want to drop down on one of two trails back. I will do this next time ! All of the trial is "intermedialt" level with no beginner or diamond designations. Ride clockwise if you can.

I rode this trail often over the winter last year while on a 3 month contract in Cottonwood. This trail really grew on me. It's definitely a fast and flowing ride with enough technical bits to keep you honest. A few good climbs. Occasional hikers and horseback riders on the trail, but for the most part it is not a busy trail. The trail surface is fairly smooth with some short sandy sections and a few rocky bits. Good fun.

Customer Service

Fun either way.
