Swayback Bridge - TRAIL

Swayback Bridge - Trail, Wetumpka, Alabama

Tight and technical trail with some steep ups and downs. This trail doesn't give you any rest for the first 2 miles but then winds along Lake Jordan ala Tsali. Plenty of roots and rocks. There is new trail currently being constructed to make this a 10 mile loop.

Visiting the and thought I'd check this trail out. I am glad I did. This trail has a lot of roots, but gives you lots of opportunity to keep your speed up. It's flows really nicely with only one, maybe two turns, that catch you by surprise. Otherwise, all turns allow you to keep up speed with several berms to roll through on. The few short steep climbs or mostly short and not very steep. One hill, the elevator, you'll probably have to get off and push the bike up. I hit the trail at 3 pm on a Saturday and there were only a handful of riders.

Very little elevation gain, so aerobically not too challenging. Lots of roots, but otherwise not a lot of technical sections (switchbacks, rock gardens, drops, etc)

Bike I rode: I purchased a used Mongoose 29er and man did it kick my butt. Really heavy, no compression...wish I had my FS, but visiting from from Korea so no such luck.

Only rode the black route and it was a blast.

Coming from Utah I wasn't sure what the trails would be like here, but I brought the MTB anyway. I'm glad I did, for the next 3 weeks I will ride this trail 4 or 5 more times. No long or sustained climbing, but nice and tight, flows very nice. I was impressed. Can't wait to get out and see what else Alabama has to offer. I'm only here 6 weeks, but I'll make the most of em. Very well designed. I rode this trail after two days of rain and it was muddy in sections but overall it seems to drain pretty quick.

Customer Service

Red route, this trail is broken into colored routes( 4 all together,I think) red trail was the longest close to 10 mile loop is what the signs out on the trail said, on the map it said 7.5, I left my computer at home so not sure how far it was. I rode it twice and it took right at two hours. I wasn't pushing hard and there was no long climbs so not real sure how long the trail is. Doesn't matter, it was a blast... If your down in this area, this is a MUST ride.

Rode swayback yesterday for the first time and was very impressed. The trails are awesome and there is something for everyone. The fire lane and power line that it conveniently crosses give some peace of mind for when I bring my family along (easy truck access in case of emergency). The lake area was nice and the scenery changes keep you interested. Would recommend this trail to anyone.

Someone(s) put a lot of thought and effort into making this trail and they did a pretty awesome job. Not a big fan of man made loops but this one just may change my mind. This trail has nice rollers and winds endlessly though the trees and ravines... good mix of up and downs equalled against off canter trails around the ridge lines. Again well thought out!!! Not the most technical of trails but if you don't pay attention you will hit a tree with all the turns. Trail in great condition even after the three weeks of monsoon rains they had this year..another testament to the great planning.

Customer Service

I hooked the black route, all routes are marked outstandingly, which kept me busy for a mid length ride. The area called "The Zippa" was rockin and made a good trail well worth coming back too!!! Could re-ride or combine loops for any length day you want...with all the twists and turns it would take a while to memorize everything here.

Worth the drive from Birmingham. Has some very fast downhill sections and some mean short climbs. It is noteworthy that it has some excellent views of the lake too! Trail needed a little maintenance, but mostly due to fallen trees from previous weekend's storm.

Customer Service

I took the black trail only.

I use to ride this trail on a regular bases when I lived in the Montgomery area from 2001-2003 but July 12th 08 was my first trip back since leaving the area. I use to say the Swayback trails were the second best trails in the area, Oak Mountain being #1. I knew there had been a new 4 mile section of trail added but still I didn’t think these trails could be as good as Oak Mountain. After riding them yesterday they are no longer second best in mind. You may not get the long climbs that you get at Oak Mountain but there are plenty of climbs that will test your endurance and you ability to pick the right line to complete the climb. There are also plenty of fast descents along the trail to test your nerve and handling skills. The last time I rode the trails they had been severely hurt by logging efforts in the area. They are back and better than ever. There was also a lot of mud last time I rode but now there are bridges over most of these areas preventing the deep ruts and erosion that would eventually happen. These trails are beautifully maintained and will test any skill rider and the group I came with proves this. We had good sport class riders down to true beginners and all were able to handle the trails as long as they stayed within their skill level. (Matter of fact it was the good riders who were doing the bleeding and that was because of the speed they were able to ride and the chances they were willing to take. Just some scrapes no serious injury to rider or bike.) The technical aspects increase when you ride them faster and you can go fast. In the same token they can be ridden by anyone if they stay within their skill limits. Also the trails are marked better than any trails I have ever ridden. I would like to give some big kudos to the folks who maintain these trails. If you want long climbs go to Oak Mountain. If you want fast twisting, rolling, short steep climbs come to Swayback. It will not take me 5 years to get back.

I have ridden this trail for the first time today. I loved it! The trail offers riders a great ride with some very fast sections and some slightly technical sections as well. There are several elevation changes that may challenge even the best of riders. The technical aspect of the trail is all left up to how fast you choose to ride. Many roots and rocks at off camber slopes challenge riders to maintain course on a particular line. The trail is extremely well maintained and great for experts and beginners alike. Make sure you wear your helmet, you may find out you're not quite as invincible as you think on this one.

Very nice trail system! Today was the first time I rode swayback and had no problems following the routes thanks to the arrows. I commend whoever made the trails for taking advantage of the landscape. Seems like it has a variety of challenge for all riding levels. Plenty of ups, downs, tight turns and views. 'The Zippa' was by far the most fun out there. The only thing that could make swayback better is an optional obstacle or two in some of the flat areas. I'm from PA and I've ridden in NC, NM, CO, AZ, Korea, Japan, and now AL! Thanks for the opportunity!

"Swayback Bridge Trail is quickly becoming one of the best trails in Alabama, if not the south." I have to disagree. This isn't a bad trail, but to say it's one of the best in the state...come on. Enjoyed it, had some fun sections, liked the "roller coaster" section as well as those challenging "wall" climbs. Good trail to get extra miles in if your tired of Oak Mtn. Overall a pretty good trail, but it didnt' live up to the hype.

This is a great trail system. I've ridden it twice in the past two weeks, both times, the tight curvy singletrack has provided great entertainment and some decent challenges. Not too rocky, lots of tree roots and some odd off-camber stretches keep you on your toes. I've done portions of the gold route, all of the red (7 mi) and all of the green (2.5 mi). Haven't tried blue or black yet though a good portion of black overlaps red.

As mentioned below in one of the reviews - the Nevegal front/ Small Block 8 rear combo works well when dry. I've got the DTC compound 2.35 on both. In fall/winter, you'll want something with more bite to counteract the pine needles.

Trail drains well after a rain. Early morning summer rides will net you lots of spider webs but it's cooler. Later afternoon shadows through the trees will make it challenging to read terrain with sunglasses - go clear lense. Definitely take water in the summer, wear glasses (it's tight in many places) and go have fun in Central Alabama.

Customer Service

Red route skirts the lake and has some great views.
