Ghost Town Trails - TRAIL

Ghost Town Trails - Trail, Opelika, Alabama

Summary of Ghost Town Trails that are located near Salem, AL.

HELMETS ARE REQUIRED. RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! Private Property so respect it!! Cell phone coverage is poor at best for services other than Verizon. Verizon will show 1 bar on 90% of the trail.

As of Spring of 2007, the GTT is new and quite bumpy/rocky. Overall difficultly is “Moderately Technical”, so beginners may need to come off their bikes for quite a few spots. Medium skilled riders will be feeling challenged, and advanced riders should be able to clear all sections with some effort. Overall trail is 10.2 miles long, has roots, logs, many sharp baby head sized rocks, short 4~6 minute climbs, fast descents and many challenging switch backs. This is not a MTB Racing course! This course was designed to keep the rider mentally and physically challenged at all times. Riders will need to concentrate on MTB skills instead of Spinning Skills. It will be a very good workout for the whole body and mind. Four to Five inch full travel XC bikes are recommended. Hard tail riders will be wishing they had a FS!

This scenic trail is located on Private Property and all riders must pack out what they pack in. Scenic items to look for are: The free running creek, some old grist mill remnants, old oak trees, old buildings, snakes, fish, armadillos, poison ivy/oak, deer, and other creatures.

Trail head and half way point of the ride includes a sitting and BSing area cleared of rocks, trees, and other flora. Bring your own folding chair and other day camping related comfort gear.

First off, WOW. I was not expecting this trail to be this tough or this fun! If you are in to technical rocky downhills and steep climbs then you'll love this trail. It needs a little better trail maintenance and I had to move a few branches off the trail but overall it is an incredibly fun trail for the area. If you've ridden pleasant hill in Tuskegee and want something more challenging then this is a great option. Cool views of sturkie(sp) creek and all kinds of neat features. Kevin has done a wonderful job with this and it shows, it's a tough ride at times but always fun! One of the tougher trails I've found in Alabama which is a plus in my opinion.

Customer Service

Turn left or right from the start gate it really doesn't matter, although Kevin (the guy who built the trail) recommends starting out going left.

Similar Products Used: Pleasant hill -Tuskeegee, much easier but faster and easier to keep up speed.

Email for permission to ride. Trails close Nov.1- Jan.1 or 31 I think? I had a very hard time following the trail with all of the leaves on the ground. I hope I can go back when it clears up.

Hello from Salem trail builder. Thought I would write an updated review with some more info here::
The tred is looking spectacular this year > being its third year. We will be adding some signs from the paved road to give a better direction to the property. The once red gate is now replaced with a green gate with a posted sign on it. Somebody needed the red gate more than us. We will be adding an out-house this year at the picnic area (mainly for the ladies and also "911" calls). There will be no running water or electricity (please use responsibly and only as necessary). This trail is strictly OFF LIMITS from Nov 1 to Jan 31 each year/following due to the property being leased to deer hunters. It usually takes about a month to get it completely cleared for the riding season so count on coming out no earlier than Mar 1 to ride. Come out earlier if you have a leaf blower to help clear. Although posted, the mountain bike is your permit to ride here. DO NOT leave ANY gel wrappers, energy bar wrappers, drink cans, bottles or trash of any sort out here or the trail will be CLOSED to the public !!! NO EXCEPTIONS !!!

Customer Service

The route remains the same as my previous post. The north end trails will be re-routed this year. It will be clearly marked. I saw five rattlesnakes on the property last year during the riding season. Please be aware of these critters as you ride and stay clear of them. We clear this trail approximately 8' wide for that purpose. If you see one on the trail, do not try to pet them, poke them or otherwise harrass them. They are really docile and will not strike at you unless provoked. Thier vision and hearing are very poor but just don't risk getting near one. My suggestion is to go off the trail and leave it with them. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURIES YOU SUFFER AT GHOST TOWN !!! RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK !!!

Similar Products Used: Trail of Tears in Phenix City - We worked this winter to clear the whole route and add an "out trail". Check it out.

Other trails in the area are like dirt sidewalks....good for you if you like that - just not my thing....

Bring your big boy pants for this trail. If it is speed you want then this is not your trail. If you want to be challenged and test you mountain biking skills, then you are at the right place. You have to think about lines all along this trail, especially on the south end. It was a great ride as I was down in Auburn visiting my daughter and decided to give it a shot. Kevin was great on communtication and directions. I hate I missed riding with him but did talk with him on the way out. It is a great trail. I rode it in the Summer of 08.

Customer Service

I rode it clockwise only.

Trail is great mix of single track and technical challenge. I would bring the FS but trail can be done with a HT. This trail really keeps you on your toes and forces you to use many different skills. Trail is getting packed down and will only get better with time. Check it out.

I rode GTT today for the first time I'm just a beginner and it proved to be above my skill level it was fun though Matt and kevin were a delite to ride with and I recommend if your in town to give it a try. The trail has some drops and jumps and few dips that proved to be a challenge for this beginner.

Technical trail with multiple logs and rock obstacles. Great course to practice trail riding skills. The trail is sure to challenge most folks. Two loops that make up a total of aprox. 11 miles of fun. Not very much climbing involved.

Customer Service

Recommend the longer loop first.

This is a trail that is just coming around. 2007 marks the first year of the completed 10.2 mile loop. It needs quite a bit more work and traffic smoothing out the tred to be first class. Since it is on private property please email me before coming out. kadams@cherokeefab.com or kfa1963@aol.com. We are out there most weekends at 10ish am est on saturdays. Sometimes later in the day on sundays for the church folk. I also go out there a couple of times a week to work or ride if possible. If you are in the area and are at least intermediate skill, it is a must ride.

Customer Service

Follow directions in previous review. Go through the red gate in your car. Stay straight on the property access road to the dead end at the creek. Park your car, unload your cooler down by the grill at the creek. Get out you full suspension bike with gears (highly recommended). Trail starts at the picnic area and goes in a clockwise loop. The north end is pretty smooth, but the south end is very rocky and technical. Some good lines, but am partial as I built the dang thang.
