Met up with local whitewater kayaker Charlie Mix in Jacksonville AL., who told me of a trail that cruised through an old airplane body nearby. I had to check this out, so we headed for the trailhead, we parked just off the highway in a gravel pull-off and peddled up the old logging roads. Great trail, still some old trail markers pointing the way as of 6/2008. Uphill out the ying-yang to start with, then either a steep & fast descent down a wide road, or singletrack your way down which takes a while, but is really fun. Also you can ride down the slanted face of the mining pits for a rush!

Customer Service

Park off the highway, take gravel roads untill you see the singletrack going uphill on your right. Follow trail marking arrows untill red in the face!

This trail is technical steady climbing most of the way. It is not a long trail but definitely a challenge. It has some really fun downhill sections. One in particular goes right down the ridgeline. Another cool feature of this trail is an old airplane hull that you ride through! A great trail in any weather.

my favorite trail in the state, because oak mtn is just too crowded. parts are like Tsali in NC and it's a challenge to ride twice through. also, killer on a full moon. i've ridden this trail for 6 years now and never have i seen more than 2 other riders.

Customer Service

definately clockwise or you can become fodder for someone screeming downhill...like me!

Very technical, hard climbs, a few fast downhills. Watch out for small fallen trees.

Customer Service

Race Track, but do take rock garden for an extra challenge. It is just what it says "Rock Garden"

A good ride for the area. Iron legs trail was well marked at the beginning but signs become few and far between as you ride. God help you if venture off to a one of the many fire trails without a map. I would suggest getting a free map at the local bike shop b/c there is only one at the trailhead. There aren't a lot of tough climbs or long decents. Trail is well maintained but not many obstacles. Why do they build a bridge over every little stream?

Get a map from Fun Wheels in Oxford, AL before venturing out. Take extra tubes, because it is rocky! A lot of gradual climbing (not too steep) and some good down hills. The course for the 99 Iron Legs Beginner race is very fun but not a lot of single track. Single track is very rocky and demanding. Overall one of the most technically demanding courses in Alabama.

This is a great ride-sustained both physically and technically. Not a extremely difficult ride though.
NOTE: RODE ON DEC. 19 and due to clear-cut forrestry part of the trail has been messed up! The trial is still ridable except for the section after the second gravel pitt. After the second pit, instead of re-entering the trial on the other side, ride down the road and pick the trial up on the left about 50 to 70 yards past were the clear cut begins. When we were loading up after the ride a (we think) local asked us about it and told us that Gene's loop and Mark's loop had also been messed up by forrestry! He added that Mark's loop was still ridable "except for the last part". Iron legs was still very ridable and a lot of fun.

Customer Service

Iron Legs in a clockwise direction-see detailed review for trail change.
