Tunstall Forest - TRAIL

Tunstall Forest - Trail, Tunstall nr Woodbridge, Suffolk, United Kingdom

Sandy to loose soil in the open and fire roads, moist but firm elsewhere. The trail has appeared through the curtesy of the annual moto-X race and therefore "migrates" a bit each year. Also, the fact that there are so few riders that know about the trail/s means that it's prone to some overgrowth. There are, however, numerous fire roads that link the trail pieces that are fast and fun in themselves.

Actually, it's illegal to ride any form of motorised transport in ANY forestry commission forest. In Tunstall Forest, the official motorbike track is only allowed for use during special events--at any other time, it is OFF LIMITS. People walk and ride horses in this forests, on the other tracks. Charging motorbikes have totally wrecked at least a third of these paths, and could easily kill or injure either the biker or the pedestrian. This is becoming a very serious problem in both Tunstall and Rendlesham forests, and I would seriously discourage anyone from doing so, except at the annual events.

Tunstall is like a 'raw' version of Thetford forest, where the trails are a bit gnarlier, the ruts a bit deeper and the climbs a bit sharper. There's no real stinging nettle patches (which is nice), but I can imagine it getting overgrown later in the summer.

The soil is pretty similar, with a sandy base which drains well.

The singletrack is on a par with Thetford in that it's all ex-enduro and gets pretty techy - there's some gorgeous off-camber descents and climbs and 'blair witch' type trails.

It's also pretty easy to get lost there, like Thetford! There's no shops or cafes in the area either, and because it's not near any major towns it's totally uncrowded - this also means there's no jump spots or dual courses.

Customer Service

Haven't really explored enough to recommend any particular route.

Similar Products Used: Thetford is an hours drive west and is a lot more crowded, but fantastic nonetheless. Apparently there's some good riding up near Sheringham as well.

The forest has a reasonable variety of tracks. There are no real hills (thankfully!!!) but quite a few big pits to bomb into. When dry it can be a tad hard going due to the sandy tracks but overall it is a good place to ride. Orford is about 10 minutes ride away and there a few shops including a great village shop with some very serious locally made pies in stock. There are some good shingle lined fire roads to ride as well as good twisty singletrack and there is also the hard and rutted MX enduro track for the guys / girls with full suspension. There are also normally a fair amount of low flying helicopters to look at if that is your thang. Or rabbits.

Well there are loads of routes and all good fun. Try parking nr. Sudbourne pit (Between Fazeboons and Sudbourne) and dissapearing into the woods. Or just pull into one of the many parking areas. It is a small forest (nothing like Thetford)and you are never far away from the roads, tracks lead to Blaxhall common too and you will always find a quick road route back to the car if needed. It is quiet and you are as likely to see a deer as a person in winter. If you hit a road cross it, you will find more places to ride and it is nearly all bridleway or better.

Similar Products Used: ALl the forest around there is good. Rendlesham forest centre is good , there are loads of tracks with a wider range of surfaces than Tunstall, they also have a tea hut in Summer as well as a camp site (www.forestcamping.co.uk)The track around the Bentwaters South West loop is also pretty stunning. Hollelsey bay looks great on a map but don't do it unless you are on a motorbike, it is sooooo sandy. There are great on road rides too if you check out your map. You can get away from the traffic and get some tarmac speed. Also try to find the UFO landing site at Rendlesham and spot the UFO spotters (not too hard). Enjoy!

The trails here are very solid and they vary fromfast singletrack to slow wide tracks. The single has a wavy contour that is tiring but fun.
