Mountain Ash - Dragon Downhill - TRAIL

Mountain Ash - Dragon Downhill - Trail, Merthyr, United Kingdom

Built by the guys at Goldtec Cycles/Dragon Downhill. Fast undulating course with none of the usual slow corners found on most UK downhills. Open sections, big bus stops, fast drops, jumps, off camber, roots and rocks. One of the best in the UK.

Rode this trail yesterday, very good mix of terrain, fast loose gravel into tight rooty wooded section into sweeping bottom section with 3 gap jumps and lots of stepdowns.
All the jumps and gaps have alternative routes so you can work up through the day.
Uplift service was good with only a few minutes wait between lifts. Drive up is a bit rough and bouncy for 15mins and run down takes roughly 4-5 mins. Sections are split with fireroads so you can break it up or string them all together.
Well worth it

I ride this trail nearly everyday as I literally live just across from the base of the mountain. The trail begins as you descend towards a wall, then a swift corner and a fairly long straight with a small jump/drop towards the end of the straight. Then comes the bus stops, the first one is the most technical due to a boulder lying across the top, it's possible to clear the boulder at speed. after a few tame bus stops you hit a small berm and begin descending towards a broken wall, theres a big drop by here which is often blocked as theres a much more friendly alternative route, beware if you do the drop as there is no smooth tranny to land on, just roots. Then comes the next wall and a slab ride, the slab is steep and again theres no smooth bottom to the slab ride so watch your forks, however, if it's speed your looking for theres a few lines by the slab which are much faster. then another long straight and small bus stop and into a berm, another straight and a drop thats a cpl of feet high but awkward (it looks much worse than it is) then down through some forestry and heavily rooted area's to another drop of a couple of feet over a log, then there's a corner to slow you down as you approach a fire road, then straight ahead theres a small jump and then what appears to be a jump but it's actually a log drop (beware of the line to the right after the drop as it leads you straight into a boulder) then comes more roots and a lil technical section until you eventually reach a small drop by a brook (watch ur head on the tree) then theres just flat out riding down through the tree's to a double log drop thats at a strange angle, then it's pretty much flat out from here on in with another small drop. The trail does tend to get worn away especially after dragon downhill practice days, the weather can also change the technical difficulty of this trail dramatically due to the amount of roots. It's a good trail to session the various drops etc, id suggest doing this before decending as often the technical parts of this trail can catch you by suprise. Overall it's a good trail but could do with some maintenance (i often do some maintenance up there) Not the smoothest track in the world but fun to ride and i cant complain because i basically live on the damn thing.

session on the way up- it will add to the fun on the way down and also give you and idea of where to go as often the trail runs off to unused sections that are over grown.

Similar Products Used: Gethin with it's beautifull rock garden and road gap (gethin is on the same mountain as mountain ash its just on the other side), Cwmcarn has a new course thats open in march and it looks a corker. The xc trail at cwmcarn is also good for training and fun.

This course is one of the Dragon DH runs. Comparable to European courses it is wide and fast in places with steep technical sections and a good mix of rocks and roots. Course was new last year and got really cut up at the first race. All that has changed. Permanent all weather sections drain off water and the rest is steep enough not to matter.

Think about this - fastest time in the dry last weekend was set by Crawford Carrick Anderson at 3.24. This is a massive course by UK standards when you think the Nationals last year at Eastridge were won in 2.00 mins dead.

Ride these courses. They are the best in the country. Only downside is the walk to the top. It takes over 10 mins to drive up. Worth it though.

This is a great course. It is fast, has jumps and some quick drops. There are really open sections and then woody sections in and out of the trees. There are bus stops to to go over. Just go there and see for yourself.

This course is fast and you should wear a helmet because the trees up there are bloody hard. You need to have good control and confidence on your bike because you need to be able to hand jumps and a very steep bit. This is not just a gentle ride. You need to be an pretty good rider.

Customer Service

Get to the top (better by car) start at top and rip down as fast as your bike will take you
