Rivington - TRAIL

Rivington - Trail, Bolton, United Kingdom

Pick n Mix - not really for experienced downhillers or jumpers. Area covers a country park and disused ornamental gardens. Loads of trails of all kinds within a fairly small area - lots of rough cobbled tracks. Paths through old gardens make a good alternative to usual trails - loads of steps. Highest point Rivington Pike 362m. Area extends from Wilderswood in SE to Healy Nab in NW

route 6   Weekend Warrior [Nov 29, 2005]

this is the closest spot to manchester with some good climbs and technical downhill. It does not rival marin or other dedicated trails. The main problem I have is doing a route of more than one and half hours.Lots of tracks, best early to avoid walkers great view from the tower makes the climb a pleasure

Customer Service

start at the barn up to pigeon tower up to tower down the technical rocky section(north side)left at gate past kennels left up track to wards mast join tarmac for 300 meters go left on track brings you out by kennels back towards toilet block cut through down steps past school through forest on other side of road back up to barn 8 miles any ideas for extension?

Great way to spend an hour after work (1/2 hour from Manc city centre). There are 2 decent decents, the one from the Pike tower to the hall via the chinese gardens (you have to be sh1t hot down steps!) and the more hairy decent from the Winter hill mast. This trail is like Morphene until we get to the crack cocaine that is the Marin & Cody B trails

Customer Service

Any, I'd stay away from the harsh rocky decent from the lower) dovecote tower, it's a real bike breaker.

Similar Products Used: Ramsbottom has some decent trails, Ladybower resevoir has some good runs. Do yourself a favour, bite the bullet & head down to the Marin or further to the red bull (Cody-B)

This trail is good for the beginner to intermediate and provides a good mix of gentle xc and downhill. The trail is compact but there's lots of little trails and off shoots to explore.

Customer Service

Head for Horwich and it's well signposted

Similar Products Used: To add a bit more excitement to the above, try riding up winter hill first, to the telecommunications mast (and marvel at how tall it is!) follow the road as it veres to the left and at the roads end turn off to the right for a very challenging downhill. At the bottom follow the trail left and this brings you out to the pigeon tower at Rivington.

Not a day long epic, or particularly difficult, but its close to home, and challenging enough for a morning or evening ride, or for those horrible days that winter throws at us. 3 tyres for conveinience and ease of access

this is a good route for riders of any experience because from the top of winter hill there are about three routes down. the route to winter hill is a great route because it is a gravel path and a nice down hill gradient with lots of turns. when the route is finished there is also a shop at rivington barn of refreshments

Customer Service

Rivi is a great area for any kind of rider of any level. Spend all day there as the lower barn does food. Stay around the pike and china gardens or head out towards anglezark for a longer ride.

Customer Service

Try going from the huge mast on Winter Hill down towards Belmont. There is a big wide track, very steep and very fast and quite long. Water drainage slabs make little jumps on the way down too.

Similar Products Used: Just before you reach the mast on the access road of winter hill, turn left on a wide track that brings you out just at the base of the pike.

Used to ride Winter Hill quite a lot, but have recently been "out of shape" :P. You'll be absolutly knackered by the time you get to the top but it is well worth it for the run back down the front face of Winter Hill. Recomend a strong Helmet, Wrist, Arm and Knee pads because you more than likely to fall of at some point :P. Try to get there during the week because it's allways pretty busy at the weekends... best when you have it all to yourself :). You can stop at Barn at the bottom for some Refreshments and there are some seriously fast tracks by the side of the Resevoir if you want more... damn I gott get back into shape :D.

Customer Service

Follow the road from the Cenitaph in Horwich up towards Rivi High School, just before you hit the school there is a gravel "road" on the right hand side, follow that all the way up to the tower or the mast. Make your way back down the front face, there are literally hundreds of different ways to combine if you know where to look.

Similar Products Used: Try going down to Belmont at the other side of Winter Hill and explore the edge of the penines.

it is small compact but has everything you need. could be a bit bigger but if you know where to go then you could be in luck. If you are after a "quiet" place to ride then look on your maps for a place called lead mine clough the will be a path running parrell to a road heading into beaumont it is not tecnical but it is quiet and has a good first climb up to it.

Customer Service

we do a all day ride including winter hill, darwin tower, and the 4 seats (not on the map)
The winter hill down hill is very good for the intermediate to experienced rider and the is plenty of places for you to learn your skill around here me and my mates have all toned our skills here.
If you are into down hill then you are not in luck this place has 1 "hard" down hill known as rocky path as see in a pprevious link but some local kids who build trails here get them trashed by northwest water because the land is owned by them

Similar Products Used: darwin tower is cool as are the moors around it although we have a high rambler count with some miserable sods there we have the trails around here it gets a 5 star because I'm getting my new bike soon and I am planing a serious all day hack.
