Santa Groce in Val Gardena Italy - TRAIL

Santa Groce in Val Gardena Italy - Trail, Ortisei/St Ulrich, Europe

Descent to the main road leading through the Val Gardena valley. Take the junction (three way to st. Pietro) and from there on to Ceves. Remember this is the Dolomites we are talking about so do not worry that the first ten kilometers are on paved roads it will get better soon. At Ceves turn right at the church and start the climb. (25% on pavement). Follow the trail into the woods it still is steep and it will be so for the next 15 kilometers. Follow the signs to Ramitzler Schwaige. this is a hut where you can stock up on calories. Believe me you will need it !. From the hut on it is beginning to become very interesting with some old military roads uphill. Up on the hill go towards Resciesa di fuori to kapelle Santa Groce. Unless you are actually a goat on wheels you will have to carry your bike for about 500 m (And you will curse your heavy full suspension bike)From the chapel that is on top you will have a breathtaking (if you have any breath left) view of the surrounding mountain ranges (cliffhanger was filmed partly here). Then you have a kick ass down hill towards Ortisei through single tracks and well rideable 'schrotter' roads. Watch for snake bites here (take at least two spare tubes) because the rock is very sharp and edgy. After about 40 min downhill you reach a hut with a terrace for a good italian cappucino. Drive down to town leasurely (there is a bikeshop there). Precautions: take extra clothes for weather changes, take water (though you can drink the water that is found in the mountains)
