Ag. Georgios - TRAIL

Ag. Georgios - Trail, Athens, Europe

This trail lyes on the bed of the Ag.Georgios stream. It crosses the dirtroad fron the lift to the Segas area one time. The first half has packed soil with lots of turns and drops. The trail has lots of logs to clear and interesting rock formations. The soils provides great traction. The second half (as you cross the dirtroad) has a really challnging entrance. Then it is almost vertical for about 300 meteres. The trail becames gradually easyer up to the Ag.Georgios chapel. Theres a small spring on the rocks behing the chapel, called Neraidovrisi (Fairy spring). this were a worship area for the ancient Greeks. After the chapel the trail exits on the dirtroad again, just before the crossroad to the Pan's cave. The exit is chalenging too. This trail is chalenging. Try it at the winter were the wet rocks and roots make it slippery! The trail connects to a number of routes. Some to be explored yet!

Let's not repeat ourselfs here, eh?

Moisture.
Yep, Mr egghead (shri) is 110% right. The trail crsses many (many-many) times the riverbead of Agios Georgios. this is a "dry" riverbead, Greek fashion but due to the fact that it runs through thick forest it's always slippery. Some sections are wet even at summer (summer in Greece is HOT).
So, better wear your armour 'cause the merble rocks are very slippery.
Not a trail for your Quiz...

This trail follow the riverbed of the Agios Georgios stream. All types of singletrack there, from rockgardens up to smooth dirt.
Although not that demanding it offers many short technical sections, as passages that add to this trail's reputation. A reputation that drives XC riders away (especially XC racers).
one advice though, if you're up to leading people into the mountains better form a group that loves singletrack and all mountain ridding than a fast group that trains on dirtroads.
Too bad this is a beautiful trail.

Climbing.
Not recomended, done it once with my HT (but hey i've got a 20T granny & a 34 large cog at my XT cassette) And once with my prototype FS bike (www.prototype.gr). You'll have to LOVE this kind of riiding in order to feel good with your descision...
Descending.
Easyer.
Two entrances, one above Agios Georgios chapel and one below. Both beautiful. A note about Agios Georgio chapel (and most of all those thouands of little chapels in Greece). Most of them have been erected over abcient Greeck worshipping places. At Agios Georgios area is Neraidovrisi (Faery's spring).

02 Octomber 2006.
The trail, after the last heavy rains has changed a bit! More rocky sections and lots of places with loose rock. Many treee roots have been exposed due to the heavy rains and some trees have fallen creating a more interesting and challenging trail.
It is easy to plan a ride with the Agios georgios trail as the last part. A proposed route is:
Clinb from the Agios Georgios dirtroad, go to Segas area and into the Segas trail. Up to Voskopoula trail and from the road that follows the Parnitha peak to the Antipa spring. Then hit the Goura trail, Agia PAraskevi chapel and though a steep 6 kilometer dirtroad up to Kira Crossing. The Agios Georgios upper entrance is after 500 metters of dirtroad descend.
Happy ridding!

Oi mates. I just saw a review of that Orbea Oiz, where a guy named Eagle claims he's ridding Agios Georgios on that sissy bike!
No way mate, you're either daydreaming or you're not a Mountain biker (Heretic roady maby)

Great trail. Have only descended it, and it's technical. Ridable for the most part, but not for beginners at all. Level of difficulty is increased due to moisture that's present at most times. The second half (after the intersection with the dirt road) is not so technical and makes for a good, fast downhill section. Climb out of the valley is taxing, though.
