Cape Split - Trail, Canning, Nova Scotia

Cape Split - Trail, Canning, Nova Scotia

DESCRIPTION

About 7km of dirt trail with lots of slippery roots and volcanic rock (about 26 million years ago there was a Hawai-like-shield volcano in the middle of the Bay of Fundy). Lots of hard and softwood canopy overhead. Trail starts at sea level and ends about 200' above in an open field. Sheer clifts on each side and lots of nesting birds to watch. Also the rip tides and fundy tidal bore are fun to watch. The return trail is mostly downhill for an easy ride back. Lots of hikers are on the trail so some caution and respect is required.

LOVED IT... decent ride and well worth the drive there if you dont live in the area and the view at the end of the trail is fantasic... the way i took through had an electric fence beside part of it and let me just say that a soaked biker standing in a puddle doesnt mix very well with an electric fence. one thing that you have to do if your planning on riding this trail is have alot of water and somthing to eat and also keep an eye out for other riders coming towards you and also any hikers that are using the trail. oh yeah dont forget a camera!!!

Customer Service

hmmm cant remember the drive there or the drive back except for finally stopping store

This is definately a destination ride. The view from the clifftop is spectacular and a great place for a picnic. Watch for hikers esp. on weekends, but so far the relationship is a good one.The downhill blast out is also a highlight, but watch the rocky dry streambed section near the end (taco'd a rim here).

Customer Service

There's only one way in, it's an easy ride on hardpack for most of the ride with some roots/mud thrown in to keep it interesting. Takes about 40 min in, 20 min out.

Well I'm struggling to escape the complacency of a desk job by getting back into cycling and this is my first season back. I'm still out of shape and the climb right off the bat on this trail certainly winded me. It was well worth the stuggle though, because the rest of the trail was alot of fun. Medium difficulty rocks and roots with lots of forest canopy to keep the sun off. The Saturday we went, the trail was full of hikers but for the most part they were a very good natured bunch, and there was mutual respect all 'round. My friend has a little horn on his bike to warn people when we approach from behind, and more often then not, a little honk from this thing, and a kind word, and everyone was more than happy step aside a moment and let us pass. If you haven't seen the view from the edge of Cape Split, I'm not going to try and do it justice by describing it.. just go see it! The ride back was easy with an exhilirating descent near the end. I'm getting the hang of forgetting I have brakes while going downhill again, and it definately pays off here. Luckily there were no hikers to force us to slow down on the descent, so we got to enjoy the full effect. This is definately a great trail that I'll be going back to.
I did however notice the previous reviewer gave this trail and 'advanced' difficulty rating. I don't agree with this, being practically a beginner myself I had no real trouble negotiating this trail, other than the bit of walking I had to do on the climb.

Customer Service

Pretty much only one way to get there, and it's like the guy b4 said :)

I'm a local in the area and have ridden the trail countless times. The reason for the disagreement on the skill level needed to ride this trail is the conditions. In spring and early summer the trail is usually very wet. This makes those exposed rocks and roots deadly. Later in the summer, when the trail dries up the difficulty goes way down, and the trail is really fast. What every time of year you go, it's worth it. The view from the split is one you will never forget. It's one of my favorite rides.

Customer Service

Like everyone else said, there is only one route.

Blomidon Park is in the same area. Anyother reviewer said there is only easy walking trails in this area. If you explore more toward there end of the walking trails you will find that there are some wacky trails which are a lot of fun.

wow, just got back from my first ride to cape split. early spring. lots of water and mud makes it very difficule to get up the hill. once on top(10-15 min), it gets pretty easy from there. the view is amazing. the trail back is great. even with all the mud it was fairly fast and challenging at the same time. definetly recomend this ride and i'll be back when it's dry to try it again.

As far as skill level goes it depends on how you ride it. If you're taken a leisurly ride through the woods it's not so bad. The trail is heavily used so it's fairly packed down. But if you go to the Split and rail it the whole way it's another story!!! There's some nasty sick roots that come up in a hurry! But the absolute best time to ride the split is at night. It is by far the best night ride I can think of.
