Nose Hill Park - Trail, Calgary, Alberta

Nose Hill Park - Trail, Calgary, Alberta

DESCRIPTION

There has been some talk of banning fat tire riders from nose hill but I'm pretty sure they haven't passed any laws yet. If one sticks to the already established trails there will not be much estra damage to the environment. With that said there are numerous opportunities for biking enjoyment in nose hill park. There is a lot of different terrain. You can make the ride as long and difficult as you want. If you want it smoother go to the right center portion of the hill from the parking lot. If you go far the left and stay pretty much left you will be in for some good singletrack downhill and then some real challenging climbs.

Nose Hill is adequate terrain for hybrid and light cross country riding. There are plenty of paved and maintained gravel routes that follow easy rolling descents and ascents. It isn't the best place for dedicated mountain biking as the sorts of single track you want for that type of riding is there, but it's little bits and pieces scattered all over the place. And unfortunately a lot of the nice bits you may discover in spring will be overgrown with tall grass by mid June. It's decent if you like challenging climbs (i don't) starting from the southern parking lot off John Laurie.

Pity Canada Olympic Park made a royal botch of their alpine skiing additions this year. They are still (mid July) working on stabilizing their little mound of dirt upon which they installed the new chair lift. And, they have dedicated the old chair to street luge service, so mountain bike season at the park is indefinitely postponed. For all of COP's mismanagement and incompetence, it's still a very convenient spot for some quick downhill laps after work. Or it will resume being once they reopen the chair. :/

What makes this place cool is the variety of routes and the fact that it is in town. You can ride around on a basic mountain bike or even a hybrid if you keep it on the right paths.

Not sure why there's so much hate from the previous posters. This place is in town and it's whatever you make it. Go up and down the banks as you circumnavigate the park and you'll hit up all sorts of terrain - you just have to find it. Best in the spring/fall when the grass is down.

This trail is pathetic. About as much fun as a half a frisbee. No scenery.

Nose Hill has some great wide open single track. The riding on top of the hill is wide open and quite fast. Great for training rides or just plain ripping along. The trails on the escarpment provide great workouts and downhills. The ravines on the north and east sides have the best technical (sort of) riding. But be careful, as of April 2000, riding on the escarpement can get you a $150 fine. (I know people who have been fined). It is a great place to ride, with trails ranging from paved and gravel paths to singletrack, from long lung busting climbs to flat trails, in the middle of the city. Great riding for all tyoes of riders. But watch for gopher holes.
If you go, try to look out for walker, dogs, dog walkers, etc. And slow down and say hello to them. CMBA is continuing to fight for access to Nose Hill Park, and a little goodwill can go a long way. Check out their work at http://members.home.net/cmba

I ride at Nose Hill regularily. As I live near the south west corner, I ride up through edgemont to the shagganappi entrance. Try circumnavigating the park counterclockwise from there. The best riding seems to be on te north and east sides. However, as of April 2000, riding on the escarpment has been banned, so watch out. Checkout http://members.home.net/cmba/ for more info.

You can really have fun on the numorous trails that surround the park. From the second parking lot go to the left, there are some fast paced down hills there. Be prepared to hit some steep uphills. They need to cut some of the brush from some of the trails, if you go into them fast you will get nasty cuts (talking from experience). All in all the park is filled with different terrain and skill levels. Bring lots of fluids with you, the air is pretty dry once you get going. Have fun and watch your limits!

Customer Service

Make your way to Shaganappi Tr, from there go NW to the second parking lot (reletively the top).

The climb is not hard if you are in shape and is definately worth it. On top, there are som really nice ledges and places to give your bike hell. There are many gullies and steeeep downhill terrains.
