Cross Country Rider

I've heard all trails on this mountain have been recently closed to riders except for the main paved road leading up to the military base. Apparently, a bunch of foot hikers logded a complaint to the local district office, the reason largely due to "less courteous" and careless riders who whizz through the trails without a care for hikers. Hence, accidents, destruction of the environment and so on.. There's an ongoing petition to lift this ban but I'm not sure how things will turn out. I suppose at least some of the trails will be opened to riders again.

This trail is very diverse it offers none dismount ride through out the mountain. The hikers are pretty friendly and rare. Best time to ride is during afternoon since most Koreans like to hike in the morning due to fresher air quality. This way you'll avoid most of the hikers. There are many small rocks to manuver around but that's all good, too. Due to four seasons in Korea, the mountain offers four different charecteriscs and scenary.

Once dirt hill road that leads to the military fortification is now paved with cement. This made it easier to climb but you'll have to watch out for the cars though. There are many cars that pass through this road, especially the military trucks, so you have to watch out since Korean drivers don't give a damn about anything on the road. There is another route that leads to middle of trail. You'll have to pass the main road that most bikers climb, one that I had mentioned earlier, and continue down the street and turn right on the T intersection. This will lead to gradul climb along the road. After about 1/2 mile climb, you'll see a dirt road entrance on you right. You'll have to follow the dirt road that leads to military firing range. After short climb you'll have to stick to your left in order to initiate the trail. Once on this trail you'll see a military training props. Keep going up the trail until you hint a three way inter section. Left path will take you to Main military base (up climb mostly) and right path will take you down the YAKSUTUL which means natural spring where the hikers stop to drink. If hit this you've made it home.

Umyon-san is one of the better true single tracks in the Seoul area. The main trail is along the ridge of Umyon, and offers several options for going down and coming back up. All of these are of medium to high difficulty, so no sleepers here. From the very peak are two of the best options. The most difficult heads south east, beginning behind an old military fortification. It gets really steep, introducing your ass to the back wheel on a regular basis. With a pitch of more than 45 degrees in most spots, it would be impossible to ride up, but there is a much saner route back around the mountain to do it again. The second option is not as steep, but instead is fast and loose, and can be equally out of control. It's one of those trails that changes every time you ride, with no definitive line. "Let the force be with you" and scream through everything in a semi-state of control. Overall, this is a great place to ride. Please feel free to contact me or Steve for further info or to set up riding plans!

Cool. Heartbreak hill . . . ask about it. Remember it being fast, but that was three years ago. Real nice in winter. Not as technical as Acha. A good intro to first timers riding in S. Korea. Have fun and contact Steve Danyo (guy who posted). He'll hook you up right.
