The Mawson is a great trail to do with a couple of mates stopping at many outback towns along the way sampling many ales and viewing many pubs, after all cycling is the best way to cover a great distance in a short period of time or cover a short distance in a great period of time (the Collective - Roam)
For me the best piece is Melrose a beautiful little town in the south of the Flinders Ranges, with with some fantastic singletrack adventures, about 80km in all. Worth spending an extra night here on your journey.
The other good piece is Rawnsley park to Wilpena pound, about 20km of fantastic single track.
Enjoy

granny gear ascent for most of the way passing gates that must be shut, take in the view as you reach each peak. Then you will follow a public dirt road with Mt. Crawford forest on the left where racing is held fang around the track or follow the blue and white markers for a undulating 500km ride through forests, towns and more forests.

scenery is great (and makes a good excuse to stop from time to time to catch breath). wide red dirt track with few rocks and fallen branches, guess it can be very slippery when wet.

Customer Service

to enter: ride along Gorge Rd to Castambool, turn right into Batchelor Rd (dirt road). It's mostly up from there. The track markers ubruptly end ut SA Water gate # 13 (about 4 km into the track). There are some new style pinkish markers as well as older blue and white once.
