Manly Dam - Trail, Seaforth / Manly, Australia

Manly Dam - Trail, Seaforth / Manly, Australia

DESCRIPTION

Pretty cruisy afternoon ride, couple of bits that get the heart pumping. If you come at it from Wakehurst parkway the start is a pretty cool downhill firetrail chances for a few good airs on the way down. Cross the creek and follow the trail up the hill and around the ridge. After another little uphill section, look right and you will see an overgrown entrance to a single track. Follow that and let the fun begin. There is some pretty technical downhill stuff a few good drop offs. After heavy rain you'll have to ride through water and then back up to the top of the ridge before another little downhill section with drop offs and rock slides before crossing the dam wall and looping round again. Follow your nose and you'll have a pretty cool ride. If you are looking for more technical, more downhill, more adrenalin, go to Oxford Falls or Red Hill and let the imagination go

This trail has everything, technical uphill, downhill, firetrail, single track and is maintained well by local shops, rangers and volunteers. I would rate it as a trail that can be ridden by people with medium level bike skills its by no means hard. My old man rides it and he's close to 60 so get out there and enjoy.

Customer Service

Start at the bottom at the Dam and ride the road to the primary school, its a good warm up before you hit serious trail.

Recently the rangers have done alot of work on the trig track installing board walks, removing some rocks and so on in order to prevent erosion. However this development has unfortunately made the trig track significantly less technical. But something had to be done to stop the erosion in that area I guess!

Manly Dam is a great cross country sort of circuit that is good for beginners willing to push their abilities a bit and also more experienced riders. I started riding the course as an intermediate type rider and as my experience and abilities grew I began to enjoy the course even more as I was able to ride sections that had previously been too difficult. These more difficult sections include the drop off at the bottom of the board walk section(Its not very high or even hard but the landing is loose and a bit sketchy and its a bit scary as there isn't much room for error if you dont get your line right)and also the only real uphill in the route is difficult to get up because of the technical rocky slope. It is good fun if you do the downhills at high speed because theres nothing too hard just enough to keep you on your toes and picking your lines carefully. All good riders should be able to ride the whole thing without stopping, and It would usually take only about 45 minutes or less if your really racing to ride the lot so its good to ride the circuit a couple of times. The best sections are the trig track at the beginning, the grassy downhill fire break, the downhill bits at the beginning of the first firetrail.

Just did it 2 weeks ago fantastic mix of single track, downhill and technical stuff AND right in the heart of sydney really good for social rides as you can return to manly for a coffee

Customer Service

from manly wharf, go down pittwater rd, turn left after the japanese imported car dealership, first on your right and just follow the bike track... once you get to the main rd (KFC) go right on the left hand side of the road and look for the "to manly dam sign". you start the ride either from the water research side or the primary school

Park outside the reserve to avoid paying the entry charge & getting locked in if you ride late in the day. Immediately go right and cross the dam itself. Turn right after crossing the dam and follow the trail up into the back of and along the suburbs. Soon enough you will see the trail returning to the left - follow it down to the water and then follow the waterline to the right. Continue along the trails that gradually circumnavigate the lake. Some of the best bits are to the west of the carpark with tricky stair and rock descents - challenging for most riders who are not known as Hans Rey or who dont have 4" plus full suspension.

Customer Service

The best route is a full circuit from the picnic ground around the dam & back.

A mix of fire trail, flowing single track, technical single track, roll offs, drop offs, creek crossings & unfortunately some tarmac mean variety.Holds the water after rain so can make for a ++++ muddy drivetrain....but hey.The local shop(BA) & park rangers are working to maintain/create MTB specific trails in the reserve so if your in the area....drop into the rangers office at the dam wall, pick up a map & have a chat....MAYBE EVEN COME ON A TRAIL MAINTENENCE DAY OR SPONSOR A SIGN/BRIDGE/TEETER TOTTER etc(not that we have any yet...all in good time),we need to nurture this relationship or we'll all be roadies with sore prostates or girlie bits. This ride can be enjoyed by everyone.....some walking sections for newbies & challenging bits for the more experienced.

Customer Service

Start at the School at the top of Gibbs St-there is a gate/fire trail...you'll see it.Basically heading clockwise around the reservior head up on the verge of the houses on ashphalt occasionally(sorry) mixed in with some single tracks that rock if you sniff out the small trail openings on your right.Eventually over the golf course entrance & onto the new single track alongside the golf course....follow this to the intersection with the firetrail & turn right, down to Curl Curl creek & up the hills on the other side.Look for the trail on your rhs again just as you get to the Allambie houses & head down the hill on the fire break back to the Dam wall.

There are many places to start but we usually choose the North Balgowlah Primary Scool (corner or Mons and Manning streets) because parking is easy, you can fill up your water bottles and it leaves the more technical stuff until the end of the ride. Head straight across the roundabout and into the bush go up to the top of the hill follow it acroos a carpark and alongside the oval and behind the bowling club. Just after this turn right onto a short single track and then right onto a fire trail. The fire trail goes around to the left and starts going down hill - turn off left onto more single track here. follow for a couple of hundred meters and turn left at the junction (if you come out on the road you went too far) follow this single track around the corners and through the sand to a fun downhill section and across some packing crates at the bottom to end up on a large flat rock. Kepp following the trail you will get to a difficult uphill section turn right at the top of this, You will come to a firetrail (you can see a trig station up ahead) turn right onto the fire trail and follow this around and then turn right and onto the downhill - lots of fun often rutted eroded and sandy but that just makes it more fun, cross the creek at the bottom and start heading back uphill. After a few ups and downs you will come to a track on the right (don't go down any that say no bikes allowed) the track should be marked (there are 2 tracks right near each other - you want the first of these) head downhill and along the planks at the end of the planks there is a nice drop or you can ride around the easy way. Keep following the track and bunny hop the creeks (need to be brave for the first one) ride across the bridge and up onto the road - follow the road for about 200 meters and turn left onto the single track follow this - when it opens up onto a grassy section behind the houses follow it downhill there are some nice jumps, keep on the grass behind the houses and you should get to some rough rock steps which are fun follow the trail turn left at the intersection head across the bridge and turn right onto the road. Take the first left up the hill and go right at the end - this should take you to Manly Vale primary school, go straight through the carpark and onto the fire trail follow this it ends after a short steep uphill and a gate - go straight across the grassy area and continue up more singletrack until you get to the road - head straight up the road and turn right at the intersection follow this up and around head through the little park behind houses back ontot the road and your back at the school. Oh yeah that technical stuff at the end Between the 2 schools there are some good tracks off to the right hand side just make sure that there aren't no bikes signs on them and have fun :-)
There are some other trails that join onto these but always check to make sure bikes are allowed on them and don't ride where there are no bikes allowed signs or we will loose access to this great area.

Fellow riders... this ride has been temporarily closed to mountain bikers for the purposes of bush-regeneration after the Christmas 2001 fires. The rangers assure me that it will be re-opened, but it is up to us to stay out of there for a while for the greater good.

Update to my May 2002 review... the track has been re-opened. Clubs such as that run by the bike shop bikeaddiction.com.au have been doing track work days there as well, and advertise the same on their site.
