Castlemaine Historic Reserves - TRAIL

Castlemaine Historic Reserves - Trail, Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia

The area has many historic gold digging sites from the mid 1800's. It is covered with old single and double tracks, water courses, and fire trails running through eucalypt and some pine forests. Watch out for gravel, some large and sharp! Good cross country fun, with some steeper challenges here and there. Great for just exploring, and discovering old mining sites, mill and dwelling remnants, etc. Almost any direction from the centre of town will take you to an interesting area. Also try following some the local railway trails for some interest.

All-rounder. Great Fun. This is a trail you can go for a nice leisurely ride with your girlfriend on if you take it easy (no offence ladies- some of you girls out there are getting pretty good and can put me to shame), or if you go flat out it will be a white knuckle experience. The water-race track is a single-track along the embankment of an old water-race, which mainly follows the contours of the steep hillsides. But does have a constant drop/rise in grade depending on direction you are riding it (for the water to flow from wherever it comes from to wherever it was meant to). There are a few steep bits thrown in to keep you on your toes. Because it drops off 1m on one side into the race, and quite steeply at times on the other side - the faster you go the scarier it gets. If you go slow it's dead easy, but try roosting the whole track at speeds 30-40km an hour. Great Fun!

Start out near High School, park on big 90deg bend in road. Head up link track which you will see if you head straight into bush from the big bend, turn left when you hit the water-race (if you go right here track will peter out after a few hundred mts). Then go out until you hit the fire-rd & turn back & enjoy the long downhill run back the way you came.
Also option to ride narrower more technical section that branches off to the right as you are riding uphill route suggested. Branch is on 90 degree bend, over fire rd. May be hard to find if you don't know what to look for. Where this part comes out into old mine, if you go straight past mine there is more single-track, or if you go left & head up hill on fire rd (big climb) and then go left on intersecting rd. follow for approx 2 more km after intersecting rd & it brings you to top end (high point) of water race. From here crossing small wood en foot bridge, head left & you will be heading back down downhill back to start.

Similar Products Used: Many but might upset the locals. Castlemaine has lots of single-track.
One I can mention Is the Goldfields track - Public trail that is really good (as of 2012)- starts in Datlesford & goes past Castlemaine to Golden point at least. 1/2 fire rd, but fire rd is so rocky at times with good multiple choice lines that it's not boring. Trail maps available from local information centres. But if riding this plan to get dropped off at one end and picked up at another as is a long tough ride, and worth doing so you aren't riding back over familiar ground.
