Nearest Town:

Park City

Directions to Trailhead:

Take state highway U.S.40 to Park City. Once in Park City, you'll find the trail-head off Bonanza Dr. and Prospector, or off Wyatt Earp Way. Other trail heads are located in Promontory, Wanship, and Coleville. Each town has brown "Rail Trail" sign posted pointing toward each trail-head. So, if you want to start in those towns, just follow the signs to the trail-head. For Wanship, and Coleville, take I-80 east to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Take the Wanship or Coleville exits and follow the brown "Rail Trail" signs to the trail-head.

Trail Description:

Wide and relatively flat trail is paved (1 mile) through Park City and turns to compacted road base after leaving Prospector Sq. In the 1800's, trains had to travel this route into Park City, so the grade is never more than 3 percent. It's all down hill out of Park City to Echo Reservoir.

Recommended Route:
Start in Coleville, head towards the Echo Reservoir dam (4 miles from Coleville trail-head). Turn around and start heading towards Park City. Once in Park City, rest up for a few minutes. Then get ready for a gravity-assit, wind-assist fast ride back to Coleville!

Review:

This is a great trail to take kids on, or if you're just looking for a long work-out ride. Took my 11 year old son on this ride twice! Once we rode July 1, 2002. Temperature was 101 degrees F. From Coleville to Park City we went through 86 oz. of water, each! We had no water left by the time we got to Park City! Had to refill the Camel Backs & water bottles in Park City. The only shade you get on this trail comes from standing under the I-80 and U.S. 40 overpasses (7 places to stop). Each stop has tables & benches to sit and have a power-bar, drink some water etc. Along the way, you'll pass by other trail-heads, each having restrooms, but no water. This is a great ride for Boy Scouts looking to pass of their 50 mile cycling requirement, but bring water and start the ride early in the morning! If you start the ride early in Coleville and get to Park City somewhere around 12:00 p.m., you'll have the added advantage of having the wind push you back to Coleville, plus it's all downhill from Park City back to Coleville! The second time we rode the trail, the weather was 89 degrees F. Went through 60 oz. of water each, so do get weather forcast information before you do the ride. You'll see 1/2 mile of pavement in Wanship, and Coleville. The rest is all roadbase-dirt. You'll see more people on this trail as you get closer to Park City (especially the last 3 miles to Park City).
