  Grandeur Peak

Location:

Utah

Nearest Town:

Salt Lake City

Directions to Trailhead:

A few miles up Millcreek Canyon to the Church Fork Picnic Area.

Trail Description:

Park and ride up through Church Fork Picnic Area. At the top of the picnic area an old dirt road takes off and climbs a couple of hundred yards before crossing over the Millcreek Pipeline Trail (a great ride with too many damn people and dogs on it). Once you cross over the Pipline trail it turns to single track. The trail follows the stream up the canyon for 3/4 of a mile or so before busting out into several switchbacks. Eventually you will come to the lower overlook of Parleys Canyon and north Salt Lake. If you continue on you will end up right on the peak with a great view of the whole Salt Lake Valley (assuming you can see it through all the smog). This trail is very advanced mostly because it is steep, but it also has some technical sections. There are two sections that are unrideable. There is a set of stairs about a half mile into the ride, and one of the upper switchbacks cuts through a rock slide. Other than these two cases, if you have good strong legs you can ride the whole thing. This trail is seldomly used by bikes but it does receive a lot of hikers. Please be courteous and yield to them so they don't shut it down to bikers. You can also combine this ride with the Pipeline if you dont want to drive in the canyon.

Trail Length:

6 miles out and back

The trail makes a really awesome and somewhat technical descent, I think they need to open a Heli biking trip on this because the trails narrows so much at points that riding becomes difficult, not to mention the grade on the trail. But once on top drop your seat and have at it. Watch out for hikers and they are always there, you will rarely see a biker on the trail.

Review:

This trail is very steep. Only attempt it if you are ready for a grueling climb. It's a great workout if you can stay on your bike. The trail is quite narrow. Like all other trails in Millcreek Canyon it is super crowded even on weekdays. Quite a few hikers were displeased to see mountain bikers on the trail, so take it easy on the way down because it is an extremely fast descent.

For a good workout, ride up Rattlesnake Gulch to the Pipeline Trail. Overall, it's about 6 miles with a 3000 foot vertical gain. If you ride at a good pace, you can complete the ride in two hours.

Wasatch Crest if you can avoid the crowds

Review:

This is a really fun climb with some nice views. The trail is in surprisingly good shape for biking despite being primarily a hiking trail. Along the way there are some challenging switchbacks and a few technical spots. A good portion of the rock slide area is quite rideable. However, unless you've never been to the top, I would recommend turning around at the viewpoint about 0.5 miles from the peak. From there, the going gets really tough. There are several ledges and big rocks that are unrideable. If it weren't for the last half mile of hike-a-bike, I'd give this trail a 5.
