  Gemini Bridges

Location:

Utah

Nearest Town:

Moab

Directions to Trailhead:

Don't recall; Ask locally

Trail Description:

A really great ride, primarily for the scenery. Mostly fire road. Starting from the end nearest town, you do a significant climb up fire road, then drop down into a canyon. Ride flattens out, with great views of the La Sal range. Climbs up onto a slickrock plateau, and ends at Gemini Bridges, a twin natural arch. You can actually ride across it! Has great views of Bull Canyon. Ride back the way you came, or (I think) you can continue and come out on a paved road, which should take you back to Moab. Get a good map first.

this trail is not much to what moab has to offer, but the bridges are fun. I usually do klondike and this in the same day, to warm up before poison spider and porcupine rim. Moab has much better, but this is a greagt trail to get started on.

This was a bit of tough ride (especially with the heat, low 90s). I'd consider myself to be an intermediate rider. There's a couple of big hills to climb, but well worth it. There was one spot I had to get off and hike it, the hill was just too sanding to pedal up. Just follow the trail and signs to the bridges. Fast, fun ride back, until you hit the nasty hill climbing out, thankfully not too long. The whole ride was about 16 miles. You can do this ride as a point-to-point ride starting at a higher elevation coming down to the bridges, though it was more fun doing it as an out-and-back ride.

This is an easy ride to a cool desitination.. The 2 bridges are pretty neat.. You can ride your bike over each of them if you wish..dirt road the entire route..Worth it if you are coming from a lower elevation and need a ride to get 'acclimated" to the higher altitude..Beautiful terrain.. Level "1" ride..Level "5" scenery..

Starting from Hwy 191: Follow "Gemini Bridge" signs.. Eventually you will come to an intersection with a "left arrow" to Gemini Bridges and a "right arrow" to Hwy 313.. Take the left.. Go 40 feet.. Make a 90 degree left turn..descend down the 1st couple of drops.. make a 45 degree left turn.. The Bridges are about 200 feet farther down the trail.. easy to locate by the numberous bike tracks,, But also EASY to BYPASS that 1st 90 degree left turn off of the dirt road (which is a turn-around about 100 yards farther along)...
From Hwy 313: Follow the "Gemini Bridges" signs.. Eventually you will come to a "right arrow" for Gemini Bridges..Don't take this "right".. continue about 30 more feet to a "Left arrow" for Hwy 191.. Just PRIOR to this sign,, make a RIGHT turn onto the dirt road.. From this point on,, the directions are the same as for "from hiway 191" above.. You'd think that,, with all the signs leading towards the "Gemini Bridges",, once you got to that all important 90 degree left turn there would be just ONE MORE SIGN..

I rode this trail (road) starting from Hiway 191.. The initial climb( 467' in 1.2 miles) AFTER the initial level road ride from the parking lot that parallels the railroad tracks is a great warm-up for the old body..after this climb,, the descent into Little Canyon is a hoot (until you have to climb it on the way back out)..
You then traverse past the Gooney Bird rock formation( REALLY large and REALLY neat to see),,thru about 100 yards of sandy (about 2" deep) road,, make a sharp right turn up the hill (the bottom 50' is pretty sandy but then it becomes hardpack and is quite ride-able the rest of the way)..
It is not much farther to the "bridges".. They really are a sight to see..
After dinking around at the "bridges" for awhile,, I decided to continue up the road towards Hiway 313 for the heck of it.. I eventually rode all the way to that hiway.. My total out-and-back mileage was 26.58 miles with a total of 2,756 feet of climbing ( I used my GPS unit to record this ride.. I then downloaded the ridden route onto my DeLorme Topo 3.0 program after I got back home..too cool..)
For folks with young kids,, you might consider starting from Hiway 313 and then just pedal back up to this point after viewing the Gemini Bridges.. NO steep climbs.. NO deep sandy patches.. and the views are awesome.. You won't get to see the Goney Bird formation but you can always drive to it from Hiway 191 AND you will not have to traverse the deep(?) sandy stretch of road (it is PAST the Gooney Bird--plus the kids will love the drive along the cliff wall)It is a very tame piece of road..A Honda Civic could make it..Itz True Itz True..
2 items of interest to you folks who travel a "distance" to come here..
1). Use a plastic laundry basket to keep your bike stuff in.. I store my hyradtion pak,, shoes,,helmet,, gloves,,headband,,shock pump,,bug spray,,sun screen,, and a few nice-to-always-have tools in mine.. everything is always together and all of it gets "aired out" after the ride.. For you pickup drivers,, carry along a large plastice leaf bag to put the laundry basket in just in case it rains..
2). Use SpaceBags to pack your clothes in.. you can put 3 suitcases worth of clothes into 1 suitcase.. it will weigh a ton,, but space is space.. they are also an excellent storage container for your dirty riding clothes ( AFTER they have dried out)..No more stinky car.. And ,,if you tear the bag,, duct tape on BOTH sides will seal the bag rip..
So, this is a FUN ride to a FUN place..

This is a tourist ride to see cool stuff you won't see anywhere else. Ride as hard as you want to get a workout. This is not a singletrack trail. In fact, Moab doesn't seem to offer alot of singletrack except for the Portal Trail and the last part of Porcuppine Rim as far as I know. I can't see how anyone can rate this less than a three unless they just don't like bike riding at all. Let's see...I'm on my bike looking at beautiful scenery doing something I love. Great little jaunt--esp. if you want to get your wife/girlfriend to come along. Perennial fav. if that is the case. Sure there are harder and more technical spots out there, but riding is only as hard as you make it right?
This trail has a lot of fun little "play yards" to hone your trials skills. The climb/descent is fun, the half way point a great place to pull out a sack lunch and eat, and the conversation during the ride always great.
As I always say, make it challenging. Put your soul into it and the result will be some epic riding wherever you are.
Cheers to alll the other "Soul Riders" out there!

Great for the beginner to moderate rider. Very easy ride( if rode in the morning or evening.) There is a lot of sand in the middle of the ride, and some of the climbs towards the latter part of the ride are loose(probably from all the jeeps that go up there.) But there is some fun slikcrock drop offs you can get air from at the end(which made the sand worth it, at least to me.)

this trail is not the toughest or most scenic in the area (got some stout competition, tho), but it was phat, bro! after several two-a-day rides, this was a chill-out easy afternooner, being all (mostly) downhill since we shuttled it. a great cruiser, some really cool scenery at the bridges (where you can reflect on whether Beau James Daley really loved life too much or was just a bonehead), the ride through the canyon past Goonybird Rock is peaceful, followed by a nice, not-too-tough climb and a kickin' descent back to 191. just the the ticket!
should be rated 4 tires, but I'm gonna give it 5 to help cancel out nummies like Will Holden below (really, bud, a Honda civic?!)

Review:

I rode this trail twice while in Moab last summer. It isn't the hardest, isn't the fastest, isn't the most scenic. But it is a good primer for the area. It is the first trailhead you see when coming to Moab from Interstate 70, and should be the first you ride if you have never ridden the area. It has some good fireroads, broken slickrock, and climbs. The first time I rode I started at 313 and went in. The second time I hooked up with some people from the campground I stayed at and we shuttled. Made me realize that I'm starting to want a dually.

I'm motivated to write this review because today's averages put this ride at 3.16 out of 5. There is nothing interesting about the fire trail on the uphill side . . . except that you're cruising down into a red rock canyon less than a mile in elevation looking up at a mountain range nearly 2 and 1/2 miles high. The inappropriately named Gemini Bridges (they're arches!) are a phenomenon. And the route down and through Bull Canyon is fun intermediate riding with awesome views. 4 stars because it's not a total riding thrill (in a land full of them), but this ride deserves a higher rating. Oh yes, very important: I've been on this ride alone and with 1000 well-intentioned weekenders . . . get up very early or go in the off season.

Either do a shuttle to the top at Hwy 313 and ride it one way to Hwy 191 or do a loop starting and finishing at Hwy 191. Going uphill back to Hwy 313 sucks and I'd only give it 1 star.

Review:

One way ---- Hwy 313 to Hwy 191
The trail is really a washboarded dirt & rock rd that runs about 3-4 miles downhill from Hwy 313. You reach a 3 way intersection somewhere a mile or so after crossing a cattle guard. Take the right fork. Signs & white markings lead you easily to the bridges. You'll have slickrock and ledges right before you get to the bridges. Hang out on the bridges for a while and enjoy the view before you leave.
The route to leave the bridges is also marked with white paint. Join up with the trail and head right, away from the direction you rode in. You have several options to get you to Hwy 191.
Option 1 - straight shot option thru Little Canyon
The trail will gradually turn back into a road similar to the one you rode down to the bridges on. Stay on this road. You'll pass two major landmarks before entering Little Canyon. The trigger road - prominent right spur that goes into Bull Canyon is encountered 1st. 2nd you'll pass a sign pointing to Gemini bridges and to Hwy 191. Somewhere in this mix, you'll also see a prominent left spur - don't take this spur. A mile or two after the sign, you'll head down a hill into Little Canyon. You'll see right & left spurs after dropping into Little Canyon - don't take them - keep straight. Follow the road thru the canyon. There's a left spur to an arch (I think) midway thru the valley. At the end of the canyon, prepare thyself for a climb -about a mile of steady climbing on rock, hardpack road. Shortly after the climb, the road swings left and heads down. You should see Hwy 191 & the parking area shortly after starting the downhill. Relax!
Options 2&3 - takes you variable distances down the Trigger road. Todd Campbell's description of these rides in "Above and Beyond Slickrock" is pretty good.
Option 2 - Bull Canyon under the gemnini bridges
There are several right spurs into the fingers of Bull Canyon. The 1st main right spur will lead you to under the bridges. Warning- the riding surface after you turn off the trigger road to the under the bridges trail alternates with lots of rocks and patches of sand. This is an out & back or can be combined with option 2 - the 2 tortoise rock loop.
Option 2 - again see Todd Campbell's description. This is a fun loop!! It has slickrock & is the most technical part of the ride if you do it. The only negatives are the route is a little difficult to follow and there's a huge sandtrap at the end. The end of the loop dumps you out near the bottom of the downhill part after the sign. You'll turn left, ride a short distance, and will join the main road thru Little Canyon.
Starting from Hwy 191 is much more interesting. The only major downside is a long uphill to get into Little Canyon and the now uphill climb to get to the sign landmark that I mentioned earlier. After arriving at the bridges, you can return by the same route or do the two tortoise loop return, which I recommend.
I belive the right spur to You want to take the 1st right off the trigger road

Review:

I rode this trail with a couple of my friends, I think that the road that you have to ride on the whole time is stupid. It big loose rocks on the climbs, so you always spin out. Then on the downhills you have to take the corners easy so you don't hit the dumb rocks. A little ways before you get to the last uphill, you go through a sand trap. It was one of the first times that I used my clipless pedals, and I almost made it through. Then with a few miles left, you climb, it seems like forever. Then all of the sudden you come to a hole in the ground with two big rocks that go across it. To make this ride at all worth your time, sit and eat by the bridges, then ride you bike across them a few times.

As the second ride of our first day in Moab, we were a little leary of riding this from bottom to top, so we shuttled up and we're glad we did. From the trailhead up top to the Bridges, it's pretty much a downhill shake machine depending on how much confidence you have and how fast you're willing to let it roll. You will not want to ride this in loose shorts if you're a guy. Make sure you spend some time at the Bridges to relax and enjoy some outstanding views of the canyons below. From the Bridges to to the bottom of the canyon, watch out for Jeeps and ATVs, they can sneak up behind you when you least expect it. The last four or five miles are along the bottom of the canyon and then climb about 1000 feet on wide dirt road providing plenty of views and lots of aerobic work before finishing with another mildly long downhill to the parking lot. We had a lot of wind and dust on this section of our ride, and were somewhat surprised by the last climb because our bike shop friends forgot to mention it. Not angry, just surprised. This was the favorite ride of the week for the least experienced rider in our group, and provided enough speed on the downhills so that even our best riders enjoyed it. If you have time, you should make this ride a part of your Moab experience. It was considerably different from the other four rides we did and had us in awe of some of the views.

The climb from highway 191 is short, but scenery is great! Watch out for the downhillers. Some are out of control. It is easy to find your way to Gemini Bridges due to the traffic, but taking your own way to the base of the Bridges is awesome too. You will be in awe of the size of the bridges once you get there. Bring your camera because the views are amazing.

The only drawback is the number of riders so any rider with any ability can ride it.

Look, I am no pro rider by any means, I ride because I love to ride. Sure, all those who wrote something like: "this trail is only good for the scenery" or "it's all downhill, there is no challenge" probably got a shuttle ride to the top and from there it is almost all downhill. I saw many of these "hardcore" mountain bikers as I climbed the cliff face. This is a great ride. You start by climbing a steep road to some fantastic views of hwy 191, then you speed down into a beutiful canyon (watch out for the hardcore shuttle riders & their support vans). The rock formations are worth the price of admission alone. You then begin a long steadt climb to the bridges themselves, SPECTACULAR!!! Then, turn around and fly back the way you came, climb the back of the cliff face, and sail as fast as you dare back down to the trailhead. This route clocks in at 16 miles, and most of it uphill. OR, get a shuttle, ride down hill all the way, and write a review about how lame the trail is. If you are looking to ride long climbs and see great surrounding, this is for you!

This was a lot of fun. I got a ride to the top and took a generally easy ride to the bridges. Someone suggested that I should ride under the bridges, so armed with my waterproof map, I attempted to. It's apparenetly further from the split than I thought, and I was scaring the hell out of myself (I rode alone) so I turned back after probably 60% of the way. As you get to the end, there is a downhill and your proceed between the formations. Then it's like 2 miles uphill for a fantastic view of Rt 191 and Arches park on the other side of the highway. It was on eof the most beautiful sunsets I had ever seen that day! Over all 3 stars, the technical was very limited, but the scenery was great!

When you start going down it is 95% down. You can pick up some good speed and really bomb it. It is all fire road. You eventually come to the double arch. You can dismount and check them out. They are way cool. Back on the trail you eventually come out in a canyon and then bike back along some cliffs that take you along Rt. 191 and back to your car. You can see Arches National Park and some of the arches. This trail is not technical and it is mainly for the views. Other than that I would avoid it. For the views I give it three chile's.

I didnt get a chance to ride much . I was doing the 24 hours of Moab and basically only had time to ride the race course. I need to definitely go back next year just to play.

Review:

This was our first ride in Moab and it was perfect to get us 'acclimated' to both the climate and the terrain. I felt the altitide change a bit on that first day and by the end of my ride I was feeling more confident with the different terrain. Perfect ride (thank you diane) for a first visiter to get you 'warmed up and ready' for the trails ahead. So many trails.. not enough time. I cant wait to go back!!

Like someone else said, save Porcupine for last, you'll leave Moab feelin' good.

Review:

If you can't ride up this trail, think again about Slickrock or rather think about walking slickrock. THis is a mild to slightly moderate climb with low technical difficulty and is fun to do as a warm up for the tougher rides. Taking the shuttle is definetely not recommended for athletic mountain bikers. Very clean (some sand) almost like a road ride.

This is a fun trail to haul ass on. No it's not that
techinical, but its a blast. Good for beginners or
intermediates who want to go fast. I don't know why
people shuttle this. It's not that tough a climb.

We took the shuttle out of town and left our car at a turnoff just north of the Arches N.P. turnoff. Coyote Shuttle then took us to the top of the trailhead. The ride is mostly downhill but has one sharp uphill pitch before exiting near the main highway. A fun variation is to cross the highway and ride the old road into Moab, which dumps out at the aforementioned parking lot above arches. About 21 miles in total. Great fun and an excellent warmup ride when you're in Moab for several days.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Porcupine Rim and Hurrah Pass trails are fun too.

Review:

The trail is mostly jeep roads and is easy. Spend some time at the Gemini Bridges, which are spectacular. You can ride your bike across them without vertigo! Great photo op.

Does not matter. A two lane fire fire road is the same no matter which direction you ride it. My Honda Civic could have made it down the whole ride.

start at the railroad ore car on hiway 191 just south of 313 intersection. You'll know it by all the vehicles parked there.

My top three picks for trails to ride for newcomers: 1. Slickrock (everyone has to do it once) 2.Poison spider mesa 3. Gemini Bridges Top three for people who've been there a few times and done the highlights: 1. Porcupine rim, the full 40 mile loop from town. 2. Hurrah Pass 3. Amasa back trail, from town.

Review:

There are a lot of tourists and/or less-skilled cyclists who pay to be dropped off at the top, and coast down. Keep an eye out for them, as they will neither yeild to uphill traffic nor leave the roadway when they stop to look around. This is an excelent first day ride in Moab, it gives you a feel for the sand and rock, without putting your life in danger from falling off a cliff. After a mile or so of flat, you climb up the ridge on a jeep trail. Semi-experienced riders can climb the whole hill, beginners may have trouble in the two or three steep sections. At the top of the first hill, you are in a wide canyon. This travels westward for a few miles to the next short climb. Well, I think I may be giving way too much info. There are e few tips to this trail: there are jeeps sharing the trail, look out for them. Don't take the Bull Canyon turnoff, you end up 1000' below the bridges, It is a great extension to explore, but the first mile or so is deep sand, and it's an out-and-back trail. Take your camera for the trophy shots with your bike on the bridges. Don't go too close to the rim of the bridges, particularly the back wall, unless you have seen how thick the rock is that you'll be standing on. You can ride out the top and return on hiway 131(really long way), or go back the way you came. There are many other trails to explore near the bridges, just make sure you can find your way back! As you will have noticed, the canyon on the way up is an excellent place to camp. Almost any car can make it up the hill to the canyon with some skill. I have some friends that set up camp, drive back down to the ore car, and commute from their camp to the parking area on their bikes. The "I like the Mt. Biker Image" cyclists do not enjoy this trail because of the initial climb, and the hard core cyclists are off somewhere more challenging, but this trail should be done once by anyone visiting the area for a few days who wants great views and less crowds. If I had to pick three trails to do in the area, this would be one of them.

The best way to do this trail, in my humble oppinion, is to have two cars. Leave one at the bottom and make it a downhill only.

We started at the top and rode to the Bridges and back. As with most of the others that rode this trail I found it pretty boring. The way I look at it, not every trail is going to get your heart pumping. On the up side of the trail, the Bridges are nothing short of fabulous. I would ride this trail again when in UT just to see the Bridges. I hope you will work your way down this road and take in the views that we were lucky enough to see when we were there.

This trail is very boring at first. The fire road has a cool descent at first but then is very flat. Once you get to the end, it's dang fun to play around on the rocks, kind of like Slickrock. The scenery is excellent.

Once at the trail head parkinglot, first road on left after you pass through the canyon west on Arches, you hop on the fire road that paralells the highway going back east. There are several different trails you can take other than to Gemini Bridges (the right fork going up a small hill takes you to the bridge, the left takes you toward Poison Spider Mesa. Lots of Fun. Once at the bridge you can turn around the way you came or continue along the fire road and make it a loop.

When your legs are dead from climbing take a day off a cruise Gemini Bridges. Get a ride or take a shuttle to the top. GB is almost all downhill - all the way to Moab. Most of the ride you can top 20 mph. Plan to spend some time exploring the bridges. A sign marks their location.

My fiancee and I just rode this on a tandem and it was a lot of fun. Easy enough for a tandem, yet technical enough (at times) and scenic enough to keep us entertained. A good place to take your girlfriend so you don't scare the hell out of her.
