  Dry Creek

Location:

Utah

Nearest Town:

SLC

Directions to Trailhead:

take 11th Ave east past the Shriner's Hospital and the park, to the gate. Go around the gate to the left, head uphill to the paved path to the right. Take this path onto the gravelly road, directly in front of you is a berm -- the trailhead is there. The University Hospital is at the end of the road that continues around to the right. The rattlesnake warning on the sign is for real, watch out during midmorning and around dusk. I haven't seen any bigger than a few feet, and they were pretty docile, but watch out just the same. If you ARE bitten, there is a hospital practically at the trailhead.

Trail Description:

Starts off with a shady section, sometimes wet, then winds its way up the canyon, crossing the namesake dry creek. Fairly unremarkable uphill, some rocky sections, but the climbing is just steady and not too bad. After about 1.5mi or so (which feels longer due to the slowish pace), the trail will double back and head sharply uphill. Take this to the prominent peak, where the trail bends right. Pause here for a nice view of SLC, if the smog isn't too bad, and decide what to do next. You can head back down, you can go right and hit a bunch more trails leading across and down the foothills.... If you live in/near the Aves or the U this is a nice little burner when you're pressed for time..

Trail Length:

maybe 4mi to the top? short

Start from Schriners sp? hospital and climb pavement until single track then ride to City Creek and back on 11th for a nice cool down.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Wasatch Crest, Pipeline, Mueller Park

Review:

One of the best training loops in the spring and fall. Summer tends to be a little dry and sun exposed and there are a lot of other rides nearby at higher elevations that become available during the hot months. Nice sustained climb at the beginning with some awesome single track rollers following. Easy to get carried away with speed so beware of on coming bikers, hikers and dogs on the blind corners. Lots of options to take if you so desire or you are running out of sunlight.

I used to ride this thing 2 to 4 times a week to get/stay in shape. The climb is not bad, but be carefull going around the MANY blind corners. This trail has become somewhat of a highway for bikers, lots of riders all the time. I've come down a little quickly and had some close calls(my fault!). Anyway, once you make it to the switchback, the "real" climbing begins. Just keep the RPM's high, and it's no problem. When you get to the top, you've got lots of choices for heading off on one of the serveral trails that converge there. If you head back down, just keep the speed down to the point that you can stop quickly, because it's not a matter of "if" you're going to meet another rider, it's always a question of "when". Also, a lot of the turns are off-camber, with very painfull consequences if you slide off into the actual creek!

Nice ride. It'll give you a nice workout if you're in a hurry. It's been a year since I rode this one, and when I got back on it last week, I had to readjust my riding from East-coast(mostly tight, dirt packed singletrack) to Utah(mostly loose gravel). I had a blast on this one. I kept getting caught coming into those off-camber turns too hot and almost went over into the creek. This trail's worth the work, just getting a bit crowded.

11th ave straight east to the gate, head past it to the paved path on the right, trailhead is at the bottom of the first gravelly hill, behind the berm sort of.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Lime Kiln, Bobsled, Shoreline to Red Butte, the fun but questionable U run through campus, etc etc.

Review:

fun little burner, great if you want an enjoyable short ride. A bit hot in the summer due to the lack of shade, but ridable much of the year barring snow. Rattlesnakes available during the summer months, but they're pretty docile unless you scare them. Seem to be out in the midmorning and dusk...
Many trails branch off the top of this one, heading down the Foothills or over to City Creek, wherever you want. You can access Lime Kiln, Bobsled, Black Mountain etc etc.
