  Bonnivile Shore Line Trail

Location:

Utah

Nearest Town:

Orem

Directions to Trailhead:

This is one of the easiest trail heads to find. It's less than a mile down the Provo River Parkway from Bridavale Falls. There is a sign posted to mark the begining, aparently a boyscout troup cleaned up the trail for a project. The trail runs south up the side of the hill.

Trail Description:

This is a good intermediate ride. The trail begins with a couple miles of accent that will eventualy get you too Squaw Peek. From here you can continue up the trail to Rock Canyon on either the west or east side of the mountain. Or you can ride down the face of Squaw Peak. There is no shortage of trails in this area. The Provo River Parkway is accesable from any one of these trails. If you head north you'll eventualy run into University and the Parkway will be on the other side. If you want to shutle there is a paved road to the top of Squaw Peak and a parking lot about two hundred yards down from the trail head.

Trail Length:

5-7 miles

Trail Type:

Singletrack

Go to the mountiains instead. They are right there, to the east. See them...there...about 10000' tall. Get it?

This trail sucks. If you like the sun beating on you for hours because there are no trees then this one's for you. If you like stepping on Rattlesnakes and eating dirt because the trail hasn't seen a lick of moisture in months, go for it. If I could give this trail a negative number, it would be like a -6.

Review:

I've tried to explore every section of the bonneville shoreline trail in Utah Valley, and in doing so have found there to be a couple problems. The main one being that there is no documentation or maps outlining where sections of the trail start or end. Even the trails website doesn't contain any information. From what I've found There's a spur accessible from just above Orem City Cemetary by the water processing facility that heads up into Provo Canyon, hits a park (can't remember which one) you follow the provo river parkway further up the canyon till you hit the spur that starts around bridal veil falls, then follow that trail till it hits squaw peak road, then you ride up squaw peak road until you see a tiny spur start at one of the U curves, follow that down south into a neighborhood, and then stay on the streets close to the mountain until you're in the Indian Hills area. There's an abandoned tennis court up on the mountain side, the trail goes of the street up to the tennis court, and then heads south to Rock Canyon, and then further south where it's apparent on the mountain side. I've had many adventures trying to figure out where the trail starts and ends. One of the funnest is the spur on the timpanogos side of Provo Canyon where it drops down to the park.

I didn't like it it was a very boring ride, no technical difficulty. If you are a beggining mountain biker, then this is your trail.

I like to start at Glen Canyon Park about a mile south of the trial head. This provides a good warm up before the climbing starts. I ride to the point where the trail levels out(skipping the double track) then head back down the way I came.

This is a awesome trail. The single track supplies plenty of surprises including 2 hair pin turns, roller coaster like bumps and a couple of lung busting climbs. Look out for people coming down!

South Fork (easier climb than the BST, and faster downhill)

Review:

The climb is longer than a mile, and it is about a 500-600 foot ascent. The last section of the climb is narrow and steep, there are two good switchbacks at the very end of the climb or beginning of the ascent. This is the first trail that I ever rode so, you don't need a ton of skills or endurance, although I have had a ton of experience riding BMX, so you know my handling skills don't suck. I usually don't even bother with the trail after the climb since it is flat singletrack/doubletrack. The trail is rocky, loose, fast coming down, and an all around enjoyable ride.

The first mile or so is a mild rolling uphill which is plenty fun on the way back. After that the trail becomes level. After another mile or so it will reach a small clearing and seem to split into several sections, but if you ride straight it will take you to a street. The trail continues on the other side with a nice view of the canyon, but the trail itself becomes considerably less scenic (and less challenging) from there. There's one primary offshoot on the left which goes uphill and crosses with several other little trails which is better, otherwise keep going straight and level and you'll reach a fairly decent overlook of Provo. Mostly, I just like the first mile. It's a climb that's actually fun to do and on the way back you get swooping turns and rolling shale-covered singletrack like a miniature roller coaster surrounded by scrub oak. It's too short, though. I do it as a variety trail especially with riders that are leisure or just picking up the sport, but it's not the kind of trail I choose more than once every two weeks.
