Bonneville Shoreline Trail

  Bonneville Shoreline Trail

Location:

Utah

Nearest Town:

Ogden, Salt Lake

Directions to Trailhead:

There are a number of trail heads in the ogden area. My favorite is at the top of 22nd street. You can also start at the end of the ogden parkway right behind rainbow gardens. This is a new addition that takes you to the 22nd st trail head.

Trail Description:

Excelent single track on the upper portions. A lot of hard work has recently been put into new additions as well as the older parts of the trail. The area is interconnected with a bunch of different trails. Popular with hikers especially around the waterfall canyon section so watch out. Lots of canyon streams so bring along a water purifier for some good cold H2O.

Trail Length:

miles

Trail Type:

Singletrack

P.S. Next time, leave the mountains the way you find them. UNDEVELOPED and FREE!!!!!!

You are an asshole. Probably and out of shape, pot-bellied asshole too. Do you really think that you could actually catch someone like me when I am on the trail. (That would be a no) So take your self-centered private property speech and shove it up your ass.

After riding up the fire road a mile or so I rode the singletrack in the basin above the aqueduct. Good fun! Lot's of fast ups & downs. Wish I would have had more time. Not technical except for the sketchy ridge trail on the west side.

There are tons of options to ride. My favorite though is to start from Rainbow Gardens ride up the new singletrack to warm up then hit the Shoreline trail at 22nd street. This is a fun rolling climb on really nice singletrack. There are a couple places that are a little techy, but for the most part its a trail that even beginners can conquer. The switchbacks up to Beus are an awesome addition, they break off to the left from the fast double track above the stadium or you can drop into coolaid on the right a little further up the double track. This is a blast, then at the bottom you hang a right and follow the singletrack back to 27th then back to 22nd or you can go back the same way you came. Its all good. Don't bring your fricken dog, the hikers bring enough of them as is. ENJOY!

All are good, but I especially like the sections behind the Univ and to the north of it.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Park by Dry Creek, Hogle Zoo, or City Creek.

Review:

These trails are great, but I just wanted to post a WARNING. Do not leave a vehicle in the parking area next to the resevoir on Northrup, behind the capitol south of City Creek Canyon. Although it is a very nice section of town and seems okay. My car had it's windows smashed and my wallet stolen while I was out riding in early April 2002. I went to a neighboring house to call the cops and he said it was the third time this year that he knows about, SO BEWARE.

Roller coaster singl track with lots of rocks and sand. It's tight and tecknical with some tough climbs fast decents and a few wicked up hill rock gardens. If you're fealing like you've got Wade Simons rideing skills, legs of steal, and lungs the size of weather baloons you might try rideing up Adams canon. P.S There are lots of Hikers and Horse back riders so slow down around blind turns.

I use the 29th street trailhead (Cause that's wher my house is!) A fun ride. Just go up, can't get lost, as you can always drop down to the city. The major trails are bikeable. Avoid any trail with chip bark, these are for hikers only. The trails committee has just put in a new switchback up and over to Beus. The nice thing about this trail is there are lots of options. From the bench, there are a couple of bobsled like trails that drop lower. I like to take my dog with me. There are water stops at the pond below Taylors, Waterfall canyon and Beus.

Go wherever you feel like. Just wander. I personally start at 22nd street. Don't get on to Old Indian Trail bikes aren't allowed.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Anywhere you can get you should ride. Use what you have. Even if its your back yard.

Review:

I haven't ever gone the whole way along the trail due to a lack of time and the season ended just as I started getting into biking. There are long climbs but I haven't encountered too steep to walk up. There is just about as much up as downhill which makes for a pretty good trail. Theres some pretty good views into Ogden, the Great Salt Lake and if it's not smoggy into Salt Lake City in some places.

We, the Chrome-Domes, like to go from Rainbow Gardens (mouth of Ogden Canyon--get on 12th street and head east) too Bues Canyon, back to Raibow Trail head.

Review:

First I have to echo my trail brother, don't listen to the weak threats by mtinvestment. Funny thing is, some of this trail has roots to Native American crossing. I'll never get why A-holes with money build their house way up on the bench then complain that a hiker/biker "ruin the vegetation." Get a life morons.
Anyway, this trail has it all. You can make it as easy or hard as you want. There is a GREAT face shot that you can take if you start at Rainbow Gardens. Instead of staying on the switchbacks, head east on the "luge" which will then break to your right (south). You'll know you're on it if your thighs are beggin you to stop! This trail can be deceptively hard--if you decide to crank it, so don't forget the water, especially on a hot day. Any/all bikers can/do ride it. It is great because you can also make it as long or short as you need. We've found a great 45 min loop that is perfect for a quick lunch ride.
See if you can find what is called "fourth-quarter" and "overtime." Climb those hills and you'll know how they got their names!
Ride often and long live the FAB 5 Chromers

The main trail... Just pick one.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Pine View, Skyline, Wheelers... What others are there?

Review:

This trail should really be a secret. Oh, well. In the Spring everyone and thier dog are on this trail trying to get in shape and be cool. The nice thing is that everyone wimps out when it gets hot and you only have to share it with a few people.
I've seen 3 different people wearing armor on this trail now! Never mind...
This is possibly the best system in the world. It's about 13 miles of pure fun from Rainbow Gardens to the top of Beus Canyon and back. It's similar in fun and challenge to Slickrock trail.
Look out for the downhillers wearing armor. Push them off the trail!
If you don't like trails with a sharp drop to the side- don't ride this one.

Start at rainbow gardens (Near the mouth of Ogden Canyon), climb to 22nd street take upper trail to Taylor's Canyon, Follow upper trail to waterfall canyon, cross over to strong canyon and follow the bonniville shoreline trail and return. There are all sorts of smaller crossing trails and other lower trails that are really fun. Its just a huge trail network, go exploring!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Maple's/ wheelers canyon. Skyline trail. Cutler's flats. North Ogden foothills.

Review:

Its got everything, killer climbs awesome singletrack, fast downhills, sketchy downhill, jumps, stream crossings and more. This isn't the most technical trail but its fairly technical and fast. If you are in descent shape you can middle chainring the whole ride. The singletrack is great but just be careful on blind corners. Watch for hikers and be courteous so we don't have any problems. Just about any skill level can ride it. Its as hard as you want it to be it just depends on how fast you ride. Enjoy!

Start at Rainbow Gardens, head north through Strongs, Waterfall, and Beus canyons, Return on the Bonneville Shoreline trail back to Rainbow.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Wheeler Canyon, Antelope island loop, Skyline Trail

Review:

This trail is the most bang for my buck, as it's 15 min away from my house. Start at the trailhead behind Rainbow Gardens parking lot. You cant miss the trail head because you'll ride right through it. There are usually riders that meet here on Saturday mornings in the summer time. It's probably best to ride this route with someone who knows the area as there are a myriad of trails in those foothills. If you take the proper route however, I think it is one of the best rides in the Salt Lake Valley. It would make a killer race course.

This is in my back yard. I start at my house and go up 21st St. go through the gate and head north to the Ogden canyon over look on the lower dirt trail/road. At the canyon turn up and take the pipeline access road to the bonneville trail and follow the trail south. In taylor canyon you can go up and over on the new section of tail to water fall canyon around to strongs canyon. Then take the trail that goes over to buess canyon. Stop at the top and come back the way I started. I prefer this over going through the houses.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Skyline trail, Antalope Island, Wheeler Canyon/ Maples trail, North fork park, Middle fork trail, Ogden River Park Way

Review:

As I said this is in my back yard. I try to do this ride as often as I can. There are numerous trails up here that weave around through the oak brush. You can do loops from 3 to 20 miles, and levels of difficulty range from flat dirt roads to 10 on the sphincter facter scale. There are also a couple of old gravel pits to play in along the way. This area faces east and can get very hot during mid summer, but that makes for some great rides during the winter. This will be the fourth or fifth year that we have made rides on or near Christmas day.

Watch for hikers and runners up here especialy in the evenings. There are several bind corners that can get you in trouble. Be considerate of the walkers I have been riding here for twenty+ years and would like to keep doing it for another twenty.

I recomend entering the Shoreline trail across the street from Salt Lakes Hogle Zoo.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Dry Creek trail is great and can be found by following the shorline.

Review:

Although there are many entries to the Shorline trails overlooking Salt Lake City, I prefer entering across the street from the Hogle Zoo. There is a nice warm up climb to the goodies and once there, a rider can choose
a trail that will take you on a nice series of climbs folowed by steep dusty (afraid to endo) descents. If you want to hawl ass through grassy single track and through streaming puddles into sunny views, take a right and rip through a 1 mile loop. Take a left and make your way towards a Red Butte garden behind the U of Utah. With its red clay rocky trail, the shoreline trail now leads you along scenic singletrack with a perfect view of Utahs Great Salt Lake and the entire City.
All in all, i don't mean for the Shoreline to sound like an Epic journey but more so, a great selection of great training loops. With a selection like this, local riders can put together many combo's of trails on their ride.

I start from the Rainbow trailhead, ride through all three canyons (taylor, waterfall, and strongs), go up the trail (over those huge houses) to Beus trail, go down Beus. Then before you come to the Beus Trailhead, come back through that "huge house" neighborhood, go down behind Weber State, then take the exercise path to Strongs Canyon, take the low trail to the 29th Street trailhead, take that up back to Bonneville trail, and finally, back to the Rainbow Trailhead. Whew!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The only thing I don't like about this trail, is that it is an eye sore at certain places. You'll see some parts that are really litered and sections where idiots make short cuts around the trail, thus tearing up the thing.

Hey! Stick to the trails that were blazed!!

Review:

The route described above will take you through just about everything, from rocky section, to rollercoaster hills, and very, very steep climbs. It takes about 1.5-3 hours. I usually do it after work.
