  Bobsled

Location:

Utah

Nearest Town:

Salt Lake City

Directions to Trailhead:

Drive East on South Temple St. Take the first left past the 1300 E. Stop Light. Drive North past the Shriner's Children's Hospital and turn left just past their property. Drive past Salt Lake City Cemetery and the crematorium. Take first right after crematorium and park in parking lot of school/park. Either shuttle or ride straight up the road for about a 1/4 mile and there will be a gate to enter the Bonneville Shorline Trail. Ride up about 1-1/2 miles to the big bend where there is a big sign prohibiting bikes, horses, atv's, etc. to the left. Turn right off the face of the hill(doesn't really look like a trail, but trust me, it's there)-this is the beginning of the bobsled.

Trail Description:

Very steep, washboard beginning. Fast, sharp banked turns in the middle(hence the bobsled name) and fast singletrack at the end. Oh, and a b**ch of a climb for 75 feet at the end.

Trail Length:

7 miles

Trail Type:

Singletrack

Skill Level:

Advanced

Take the BST up to the top out of City Creek.

BST, Mill Creek Pipeline, Wasatch Crest

Don't be a wuss, work for the top :)

I started riding with worn out brake pads from recent mud riding: WELL FUNCTIONING BRAKES ARE A MUST! I endod on the washboard part and ripped apart my front brake, and the front is generally the most important on this type of ride. I rode it probably twice as fast as I should've without that brake, but it was a hell of a ride. I'd reccomend it to anyone who rides the BST, it makes a great finisher.

Park your car at the small park just north of Schriner's hospital. Follow the paved bike trail east. This will take you to the start of Dry Creek. Ride the Dry Creek trail to Bobsled trailhead. At the bottom of the Bobsled you can hook up with 11th ave. and ride to your car.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Dry Creek to City Creek Canyon

Review:

This route is for those who like a little climb. The ridge line trail of Dry Creek is a smooth fast ride with a lot of great views of the city. The beginning of the Bobsled is steep and wash board. The Bobsled itself is wild ride. Its got the bobsled style turns and a few decent drop off's. There are two logs you ride under on the lower half. You will ride under one log and come around a blind right turn to the second one. THE SECOND LOG IS NOW TOO LOW TO RIDE UNDER! So don't loose your head. It is over pretty fast, but worth it.

If you only have a little bit of time and you live by the U this is the trail for you! It is a good up hill for about 2 1/2 miles and then a sweet single track luge for the downhill. At the end ride up through the residentials and then hit the upper single track on the way back.

It is a hell of a ride, its good because you go down the whole way exept the last 75 feet, but make sure you have good brakes and make sure you launch off the 40's and 50's cars that are in the bottom of the ravine.my best advise is BE EXPERIENCED AND RIDE LIKE HELL......and have fun.

When I first rode this trail, I rode it on my ol' HARO Race BMX bike, with one brake and the cable inside the housing was about to break. Needless to say it did halfway down the bank turns and such. Like the last guy said about his friend crashing in the ditch where the water flows?! Yeah, It hurts, but it stopped me! Reccomendation... Don't ride a BMX on this. Oh yeah, and brakes are always good, or your screwed. Have a good one.

Nice ride, but you have to work for it... My buddy Chris started down the bobsled andhis tires went into a path carved by water... and needless to say he was in bad shape from there.. Went over the handlebars.. and ended up with 80 stitches in his face... and he was wearing a helmet! So be careful! I nice ride though, I enjoy going up on the sides of the hills on the way down, does not dissapoint! Heres a pic of my buddy Chris after the accident! Pretty bad... But he's ok now... Long uphill for 1 mile then steep down hill on loose rock for 1/2 a mile. Then the good bobsled part steep banked turns probably 70 to 50. Then fast through a forest w/ banked turns. Following is 7 car canyon (many old burned out cars fun to peddle kick off of)
some drop off's, jumps and other fun stuff also.

EXPERT TO ADVANCED
I'm 13 I have no prob biking it on a Specialized Enduro.
It's all about how much you use your breaks. Full suspension recommended, no pads needed .

if you are a person that likes fast smooth downhill ridding you will love this trail. If you go up dry Creek it is a ways up hill before you get to the bobsled but boy is it worth it. I love it so much I ride this trail at least once a day they did not have that in the selection tab above. Have fun.

This is a great trail. The uphill at the first is worth it. This is the coolest. It is just like a bobsled course. I was loving it until i smacked into a rock and flew over my handle bars. I Loved it even if i got scraped. Up i would reccomend this trail.

When I lived in SLC (untill 1993), this was my favorite trail. It's seen more than its fair share of riders over the years, but remains fun. The top is quite steep, washboarded and loose, but it's a good balance test. The actual "bobsled" portion is a helluva lot of fun.

I remember riding this when I first hit the trails in 1987 on an old Bianchi bomb (must've weighed 38 pounds), and moving up to a Scott and then a hard-forked Slingshot. I remember riding (and racing in the old Utah Fat Tire series) the trail and enjoying it well before the days of front shocks, let alone the new cushy-ride full-suspension rigs. I've ridden my current rig (1997 Marin Indian Fire Trail with Manitou SX shocks) a few times in the past few years, and it's still a kick to ride!

From the top of Terrace Hill Drive, take the right gate of the shoreline trail, up up up to No Bikes sign then down down down the bobsled.

Try Dry Creek to the bobsled for a different way up.

Review:

Road the bobsled this morning 4/24/01. It was great fun. Quite a grunt getting there (I started from 11th avenue and biked up to the top of terrace hill dr). Coming down is fast and wild. Lots of rocks, loose rocks, and plenty of mud. The seep up top is still letting quite a bit of water into the upper portion of the trail. Over all it was a blast. This is a fairly technical bit of trail. I would not recomend it for novice riders. Good brakes are a must and full suspension is, while not a nesecity, nice.

Its a smokin' downhill with the burms
and all. But I suggest you try riding over the
Cars. I called that area Sanford and sons.
The less brakes you use the more fun it is.
Best time to go is in the fall when the washout
isn't as bad.

I rode the Shoreline trail to the top of Dry Creek and kept on following the trail. Keep going until you see a convergence of several trails at one point. There's a sign facing the Bobsled trail that tells you that no bikes, dogs, etc. are allowed. If you turn away from the sign and start downhill, you are now on Bobsled.

I used to live out in SLC and somehow missed this one. I'm glad I found it. The first section is quite nasty. There's a lot of large, loose gravel and deep washout ruts. But once you get to the point that the trail takes a sharp right, the fun begins! This is a VERY fast trail. Just use all the berms, and only your own fear thresh-hold will force you to slow down. I will caution you that when you get to the junked cars, watch out for the only bad corner on the trail. It's tight and loose, with a precarious crash-zone. I didn't know any other way back but to turn around and climb the thing. It's VERY climbable, except for the last 100 yds. All the loose gravel and ruts make for a huge energy drain.

The best and funnest way to ride the "Bobsled" is to combine it with the shoreline trail. Start over by hogle zoo. Make your way over to the bobsled. After riding the downhill, ride back up the road and singletrack and make your way back to the zoo. Don't shuttle to the top like some of these poor excuses for mountain bikers have suggested. Be a man (or a tough woman) and make a ride of it. Show the hill how easy the climb is. If you have some extra time turn up where the bobsled begins and go as far as you can. (technical climb with a great view)

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Shoreline trail, mueller park

Review:

Ultra fast downhill. Not too technical. You can really fly down this trail because of the banked turn turns. Enjoy it while it lasts. The only problem with this trail is that it is too short. That is why you should compliment this ride with other trails. This trail is best in the spring or fall. There is very little shade in the summer and is is very hot. If you want to ride it in the summer try early in the morning or late in the evening.

I like to begin in the canyon off the Shoreline Trail just north of the Huntsman Cancer Institute at University Hospital. Just go over the berm and it is a single track that follows a dry streambed. About 2.5 miles, the trail hairpins and traverses along the hillside to the Bobsled. You can easily miss Bobsled so pay attention to the sign on the North side of the trail that says no motor vehicles/ no bicycles. Drop down into Bobsled and off you go. kissing a rock.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Shoreline trail. Pipeline in Millcreek Canyon.

Review:

The beginning is choppy and rutted. Be careful about some of the turns since they are sharp and you could find yourself kissing a rock. Truly experienced riders should ride this and it is not a trail for beginners. This is a perfect trail for a downhill bike and practicing for slalom racing. I'll give it four tires due to the rocks and rutting.

Park in the parking lot at the bottom of Terrace Hills dr. and ride up the 1/2 mile pavement to a single track entrance. THe bobsled is known as a one way trail--Downhill only.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
For a good climb, don't take the bobsled turn off on your way up, but continue to Twin Peaks or further along the trail, catching the bobsled as the final stretch of downhill. A perfect end to a scenic ride.

Review:

As good as downhill gets, however I wish the trail was closer to four miles rather than the all too short 1.5 or so. It should be ridden at least twice per trip.

The climb up was pretty tough especially if you ride from the parking lot but once you get to the trail the climb is well worth it. The trail is fast and bumpy it is the funnest trail I have been on. Review:

After you get past the climb to the beginning of the trail(which I hate because climbing sucks) the trail is really fun. The first downhill part scared me at first because it is really steep and really washed out and rutted. As soon as that is done, get ready to have fun as the true bobsled part of this trail rears its head. You can get a lot of speed and fly through the sharply banked turns, it's not super-technical, but don't get stupid either. After that it turns into a quick singletrack for the rest of the ride, watch out for the old cars on the sides of the trail and be aware of the really low tree trunk that crosses the trail towards the end, you'll really have to duck to get past it. There is one drop-off at the very end that if taken too slow wiill through you over your handlebars, just let go of the brakes and launch it and you'll be fine. This is one of the best trails I've been on so far, being new to riding this trail wasn't too hard for me, but real beginners should be wary of some of the technical parts.
