Everything is great. Make sure you do ThunderRock Express. Up - extreme pain. Down - extreme fun.

OFFICIAL TOUR DE TANASI ROUTE: Starting from Thunder Rock campground, ride up FS 45 about a mile to West Fork trail (on left in the open hairpin turn). Continue up to jct. with FS 1330-B, turn right and go up past gate at the top, where Quartz Loop starts on the left. Up and down under power lines, pass trail on right to fork of the loop. My fave is clockwise (left). When you get back, go up to Bypass Trail on left (you passed it earlier) and take it down/up/down to where it drops back out on FS 1330. Go left and come to River View Loop shortly on the right. This is my favorite direction for this trail as it gives you a sweet downhill at the start rather than a long grunt at the end. When you finish this loop, turn right on FS 1330 and head back, passing some road you've tread and Chestnut Mountain Loop (which FS 1330 is actually part of) on the left to Bear Paw Loop, continuing straight. After the bridge at the bottom, bear left and head back up with a few dips down (right is a cool fast downhill to the WWC where you should be careful of hikers on the weekend). Back at the top, turn right and go back to Chestnut Mountain Loop and turn right again. Take this road which turns to singletrack and then back to road about 2.8 miles to a small meadow intersection where Thunder Rock Express begins straight ahead. This will drop out on a TVA Access road just above FS 45 where you started.

Congratulations! You've just ridden some of the finest 20 miles of trail in the southern Appalachians! The USFS has done a supreme job on behalf of mountain cyclists, so help out by signing in at the Whitewater Center and marking the "mountain biking" column - show 'em our numbers to keep these trails great!

Trail highlights:

Nice climb up to the top (beginners might want to shuttle - FS 45 up to FS 221, turn right and park where Quartz Loop starts).

Great downhills: back half of Quartz if done clockwise, last stretch of Bypass down to the road, first part of River View if done clockwise, right leg of Bear Paw, and last but no way least Thunder Rock Express.

Contour cruising: Chestnut Mountain singletrack, 12-18" wide through the dark hemlock and white pine forest. River View and Quartz, where you can hammer in the big ring if you are so inclined.

Tanasi has basically replaced Tsali as the place to drive to for folks all over this region. I'll always love Tsali but I sure am glad Tanasi is just over an hour away from me. Lots of other outdoor stuff to do in the area, also. Ducktown is close enough for groceries, but you'll have to go to The Bend Package Store in Copperhill for beer (drive-up service and they've got a good selection). Tanasi is the new mecca of the Southeast, trust me.

Nice climb up the Bear Paw Loop to the wider Chestnut Mountain Loop. We rode here two days on saturday we went to the right Chestnut counter clockwise to Quartz Loop (ccw) good, which went from double track to nice single track untill the Thunder Rock Express. From there the C.M.L. goes double track again. The Quartz loop is nice single track sunday we rode it clockwise, and this made a steep climb into a very nice downhill. So do the Q.L. clockwise. Saturday it started to drizzle so we hit a friends truck who was parked at the bottom of the West Fork. West Fork is a wide screaming down hill with dry water-bar jumps. Sunday we parked at the picnic area across the river (very nice). The ride took us up the Bear Paw again to C.M.L. clockwise UP..UP...UP.. to River View Loop. R.V.L. is the trail that XC mountain bikes are made for. R.V.L. is a total rollercoaster. It is a new trail and is a blast. We then rode to 1330 Bypass to Q.L.(CW). Screamed downhill on the C.M.L. Tammy's computer said top speed was 38, so I had to be doing 45ish. Then we hit the Thunder Mountain Express to the bottom. What a great piece of trail T.M.E. is one of the funest trails we have ever been on.

Bring spare tubes I got 2 flats the first day. Thanks to our trail angel and saturday guide Don Fox I made it out without walking. I had air and tube for only one flat. He carries two tubes all the time and rides there often.

Bring lungs, legs, water, tubes, and air.

Park at Thunder Rock. Climb FS45 to Westfork. You have to really watch for this one. It is on the left in a big hairpin turn in the road. It is easy to miss because it drops off sharply from the road.

West Fork climbs on up until you hit The Chestnut Mtn Loop. Go right. Watch for the Quartz Loop on the left right by where the trail hits another FS road (221?). This is a spur that takes you out to a loop. Stay left. You will pass two other trails. The second trail is where you will return to the spur after completing the loop. When you complete the loop, go left and make your first left. This will take you up and back down (fast!) until you hit a closed FS road that is slowly reverting to single track. Go right here and look for the River View Loop on your left. Follow it a ways and it eventually hits the same closed FS Road. Go right, Pass Chestnut Mtn and take the next left onto Bear Paw loop. As you complete the loop, you can either go straight ahead and start climbing or make a hard left and ride down to the Whitewater Center. Stay straight. Pass The Bear Paw turn off, and look for a left onto Chestnut Mtn. Follow this a couple of miles looking for T R EXP (this is how the sign is marked for the Thunder Rock Express trail. When you hit the bottom, you are basically back at Thunder Rock.

Exit I-75 north of Chattanooga on Hwy 64 follow signs to Whitewater center. Park at Whitewater center (for a couple of bucks) or park on road near Thunderock campground for free. The trail head is located across bridge behind WWC.

While in the area check out the Chilhowee mountain trail system. Its very close and maybe better than the Tanasi trails. You decide ENJOY !

This is one of the best trail systems in Tennessee.Be sure to bring your climbing legs. The Thunderock Express is a must do downhill. The Riverview trail is another must do.
