If you are wondering if this trail is too easy or too technical for you then don't worry. This trail has a great mix of stretches for different skill levels and it is easy to pick your level.

I recommend printing a map (available from a link off the Lock4 web site) cause we got a bit lost in the east trails. Its not really a problem because the area is bounded by road and lake and it is pretty easy to get out.

The folks maintaining this trail have done a great job. There are signs begging riders to let the trail rest after a rain. We should all try our best to respect that.

I really enjoyed this trail. I have only been riding twice this year and I am embarassed to admit that (Injuries). We drove about 2hrs. and had to put up with some late friends(and we have all been there before). But the drive was well worth it. The trails were in great shape. They also offered so many different aspects to riding such as some rocky trails, some nice switchback uphills and downhills, some tight technical areas and even some jumps that my friends which are BMX riders also really enjoyed. I highly recommend this trail to riders of all skill levels. It is the best trail that I have ridden in my two year mountain bike experiences. We had a couple of ladies with us that are verily new to the sport and they also enjoyed it very much. The only difficulty we had was with the directions. We never found a Sweeet Holly Rd. We ended up using Peach Valley Rd. and it took us straight to Lock4 Rd. Have fun.

5/23/2002 was my first time at Lock 4, and my first time back on the trails after many years of being away. It was a blast! The trail was fast in a lot of areas, and even after being out of the loop for awhile, I managed to keep things under control. I did get turned around and ended up going backwards on the route at one point (sorry folks). The signs are helpful, but some of the forks in the trail aren't marked, and it's easy to get turned around or end up on a trail you hadn't intended on. I'm looking forward to improving my ride and conquering some of the more challenging areas of the trail for a rookie like me. The views of the lake are beautiful, and everyone encountered was friendly and helpful. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to get out there and enjoy some good trails and scenery.

First time to Lock 4 was this past week...May 22. This trail is not all technical stuff so dont be intimidated. Lots of shortcuts for beginner riders and many obstacles to challenge those who think they are hardcore enough to handle them. Watch for the signs! There are signs...Caution...Right...Left...etc
PAY ATTENTION and watch for blind drops usually located after the large caution signs. Always follow the signs the right way and dont ride backwards this is only asking for trouble! Have fun it is well worth the drive!

Review:

This trail just keeps getting better. I rode it yesterday and it was a lot cleaner riding than i remember. The entire network is the typer of rolly singletrack that dips and curves so its fun, but it's harder for those who just want to sit and find a rythm. Also, EVERYBODY needs to at least grab a branch and lay a few across the mud pits that are popping up and lingering after weeks after a rain. You ride it. It's your trail, take care of it.
One thing is that the trail needs an unofficial "direction" so that there are less people meeting from opposite sides. The tril is conostructed so that there are a lot of fast ,blind corners that can be close when 2 riders intersect.

Ride the whole thing. They're all pretty fun if you go fast enough.

If you like smooth single track, Chickasaw Trace down in Columbia will also be a fun ride. If you need a rocky relationship with your trail, Hamilton Creek provides all the hardship you'll likely need.

Review:

I'm a lover of Hamilton Creek, but Lock 4 makes for a change of pace. Anybody can ride Lock 4 and have fun. Thanks go to Dave at Biker's Choice for adding a few optional jumps. There are a few choice sections that are must see attractions. The two west loops that are across the road are a blast with several opportunities to catch some air. The rollers on the first loop on the west side is an old favorite. 'Prejump' the first drop to ensure speed going up the next rise to get a little air on the top and you will most likely catch more air on the next hump. Just keep it between the trees. Rabbit run is a great strip of downhill singletrack that will have you barrelling down the hill at surprising speeds. Taking a left at the first jeep road will take you towards a section I call 'star wars' because you're zipping through some really tight singletrack. The aroma of the forest in this area is quite strong. I like it. Beware of deer in the entire trail area. I've ridden to within 10 feet of deer on several occassions. A friend of mine came a foot or so from giving a deer a Bontrager enema. My only real complaint about this trail is it's (in my opinion) overly manicured state. There was at one time a tree lying across the trail that was only about a foot high. Quite crossable in my book, but the tree disappeared in about 3 weeks. I still miss that tree. I must give much credit to the folks that do the maintenance at Lock4. If you want a buffed trail, there are few trails that are as smooth as this one. If you like smooth single track and hate Hamilton, you'll probably love this trail. I love Hamilton, but I still enjoy Lock 4 quite a bit. There's not a section that I don't like, but a few good log crosses would make my day or maybe a boulder or three. Luckily, there are a couple of logs that are close to 'main street' (the main drag that starts at the parking lot and takes a right at the entrance) that can be hopped without going more than a foot or so from the trail. There's also a great drop-off near the lake that you can just sail off of before a quick turn. A couple of switchbacks later, you're into a little rocky section that's somewhat reminiscent of Hamilton Creek. All in all, a very worth while place to ride on a regular basis to at least polish the skills that you don't use at Hamilton, if not for sheer fun. Beginners can ride pretty much the whole trail without worries provided they maintain a reasonable speed. Speed freaks should be able to have plenty of fun, because this place just gets to be more fun at higher speeds.
