  Fairveiw Nature Park

Location:

Tennessee

Nearest Town:

Nashville

Directions to Trailhead:

South to Franklin, TN from Franklin go west on hwy 96 to Hwy 100 to Fairveiw, TN (approx. 20 minutes south of Nashville). Go south on 100 through Fairveiw to France's Industrial Park on Right turn and follow signs to Nature Park Parking area.

Trail Description:

Mountain trails bike club in Nashville worked hard on this trails system some time back and helped produced a good place to ride. Trails are very sensitive to water so check at bike shop for local conditions. Maps are available and trails are marked red for 7 mile loop, yellow for 4.5, and jeep roads only about 3 miles. There is some horse back traffic in mornings and afternoons, so I try to hit the trails mid day. Seven mile loop has a fast hard pack with churt surface. It is rocky in spots and some nice creek crossing which tend to be slick. Not a lot (if any eleveation gains) hills but kind of rollling. follow the trail markers. This is my favorite place to ride in Middle Tennessee

Trail Length:

7, 4.5, 3 miles

Singletrack & Fire Roads

The only real trail is the perimeter trail. The others are just some jeep roads that are 1/2 mile to a mile long.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Montgomery Bell is the closest trail to Fairview. I know of two loops totaling 13 miles. That is over 3 times the amount of trail at Fairview.

Review:

Have not done the trails since the beginning of 2002. They have continually closed sections of the trail and opened and/or made other sections. The trail head entrance from the main road is now closed and the section by the creek with the big uphill is closed too. Once you get by the cementary and out to the power lines there is a newer section and the old section is closed. The overall impact of the closures seems to have shortened the trail. They have a big board near the restrooms and it would be nice to post some explanation as to why they continue to close more of the trail.

well, i finally got in a dry day. this trail is a real speed demon. nothing technical here, just miles of windy singletrack begging you to fly through it. this is a good place for beginners or speed freaks. oh, and watch that creek crossing...it's VERY slick.
this one could be longer too. you really have to do laps to get in any kind of mileage.

O rode this trail twice this weekend and it was great. The trail does get wet easily though because the first day I road the trail, it was dry and perfect but the very next day it was very wet in few places although the weather was beautiful and it had not rained the night before or the week before. I did not know what to think. Otherwise great trail when open.

no review here, but i did go to ride the trail today and there was a sign up that said the trail was closed due to rain. I checked the storm totals on freeradar.com before I left to be sure it hadn't rained much there. It had rained less than 1/3 inch the day before. I got out and poked around and everything was dry...a little moist because it was early in the morning, but the trails were perfect...not dusty, but not anywhere near muddy or even wet. And this being Middle Tennessee, these trails are never going to get any drier than they were this morning. Is this how the park service always runs this place? Needless to say, I was kinda put out having driven all the way over there and finding a closed trail, even though it was dry. Actually, every trail I've tried in the Cumberland Plateau has been closed or advised against when the conditions are anything but dry. Oh well, looks like time to put up the MTB and head to the gym for the Winter.

My two favorite ways to ride this trail are counter-clockwise on the Perimeter trail, and clockwise on the perimeter trail, then taking a left on the fire road at the end of the trail instead of climbing up to the parking lot. This enables you to add a couple of miles to your loop by riding the jeep trails around the ponds before heading up to the parking lot.

I'm disappointed in the changes that have taken place at this trail. Every time I start to enjoy the trail again, they close a section of it. Then they open a new shorter and easier section to replace it. They are way too overprotective out there. Why won't they just let us do some work on the sections that they closed? I still enjoy riding here occasionally because it is a beautiful place to ride, and it is the fastest trail around...but I am demoting my previous rating of 4 stars to 3 stars.

I rode the perimeter recently on 7.28.02. The areas were new trail have been added and old trail closed really knocks the level of skill and enjoyment down on this trail. Maybe they should do like some other places and have a difficult and easy option. Some great climbs but rough descents. Need some better erosion control. If coming from Nashville, I would rather spend my time at Gallatin or Columbia.

Review:

I loved this trail prior to the closing of some of the more radical perimeter trails. Since flood and up-keep damage, some of the more challenging trails have been closed. This park system is trying too hard, with its trail system, to be many things to too many people. It has changed from a fun "fast track" to a much slower beginner trail. This trail was never a hard trail, but it did have its fun spots. Now, many of those areas are closed. Bummer. But on a positive note, more people can ride this trail now, which in the grand scheme of things, is better.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Hamilton Creek, Lock 4, Chickasaw, LBL, Sewanee

Review:

Improved trail markers and some nice new re-routes have greatly improved this trail system. Lots of the old "rabbit trails" have been blocked off, so it's easier to stay found now. There are a few completely new sections of the trail (some very new...watch the little stumps) and a nice new bridge over the creek at the end of the road on the Perimeter Trail.

Of course, one of the best short sections of the entire trail is the whoop-de-doos coming down off of the Dome trail back toward the ponds and parking area.

There are usually decent maps at the trailhead with a phone number you can call to see if the trails are open. The last I heard was the trails are generally closed for 24-48 hours after the last rainfall -- CALL before you make the drive!

Review:

I've only been riding for about half a year so this spring I've tried to visit all the recommended trails in the Nashville area. Previous to riding this trail, I've ridden Lock 4 and Hamilton Creek.

First off, you may want to try a different driving route then suggested on this site unless you live in Franklin. Take I-40 or hwy 100 directly if you live north of town. I spent a good part of the morning driving around Franklin from South Nashville, but the drive back on I-40 was MUCH faster.

My second mistake: I rode the Perimeter trail backwards! The trailhead locations begin down a paved road a little ways from the parking lot. I mistakenly took the trail exit for Perimeter down by the pond, and had to stear clear of all the riders coming down the trail the proper way, not to mention I had to ride UP a nice downhill portion of the trail. Compared to Lock 4, these trails don't have quite the same polish, but they are fun and safe to ride none the less! It took me about an hour to ride the 7 mile Perimeter trail, including a couple turn-arounds because I got lost. If you're looking for smooth aerobic workout but don't want to drive to Lock 4, this trail is worth checking out.

I know that this trail is not the most technical trail around, but I must admit that it's one of my favorite places to ride around here. The trails are always in great shape, and they drain particularly well, except around the powerline areas. This is a great place to get in some fast riding, and hone your skills. The riding here is also very scenic.
I recommend riding here if you're looking for an occasional change from Hamilton Creek and Lock 4 (both of which I also enjoy). It's great terrain for beginner and intermediate riders, and experts might enjoy it once and a while as well. The trail flows very nicely, and does not constantly wind back and forth the way Chickasaw does.

i was in nashville on a business trip and searched online for mountain bike trails and this one seemed worth a try. i wasn't dissapointed. i rode the trails on consecutive days because of great weather and fun riding. this trail is great for everyone. beginners can go out and have a good time, and more experienced riders can get in some good sprints here and there. overall, the trails were in good shape. lots of fun singletrack, but also some wider roads to roam through. if you are looking for a long ride, you may want to go elsewhere because i spent less than 2 hours on my bike and rode just about all the trails. great place to get out and get a short workout though. the first day i rode was quiet, not many people around and i saw 5 deer. that's always kind of cool to experience a little nature on the trail.
i could see how locals might get bored here after a couple of rides.....there is only so much terrain to cover.

great fun for out of towners not looking for a real tough workout!!

Tommy Hatcher, I take it your the head of the mtbike club here in town? Why are you dogging people who ride and are looking to get involved? I have been riding for two years and I am about to join the Sumner county club, but your attitude is horrible. We are in this together and should bond especially the leader. I guess your the dude building Monty belly and do alot of the trial work, which is appreciated, but that doesn't give you the right to dog people of lower abilities. We don't all race dude. I've sweated bullets next to you twice. I should do it more and we all should do it more. I think it is great what you do and have great respect for you, but that was wrong to dog the dude for voicing that he thinks hamilton creek is done, it is done dude, it is in terrible shape compared to the other trails in town. I've looked everytime I ride there at the bulletin board hoping to see a work day scheduled. I haven't seen one since last fall.

The Fairview trails at Bowie nature park are the perfect setting for the beginner to expert rider because they can be enjoyed at any speed. Many different combinations of loops can be created to keep it from becoming BORING as some earlier comments have suggested.Melissa Bell and the folks at the park service have done an OUTSTANDING job of cleaning up after last years devistating storm damage! We at the Harpeth bike club have continued to assist in the longstanding work on the trails (originally known as the Mountain Trails Bike Club)and helped cut open the new section of the perimeter trail leading from the creek at Bowie Hollow Rd to the power line. The relationship we have with the Park IS contingent upon how we get along with other users. It is very important that all cyclists yield to equestrians because of the possibility of spooking the horse. This isa known IMBA rule and since some commentators seemed unaware of this let me inform you that if you cause an injurious or inflamitory situation you run the very real risk of more trail closures for all of us! One very nice section of the original perimeter loop was closed to bikes for this reason so this is not an idle threat folks! You can get more info on rules of the trail from the folks at IMBA.com. I really hate to have to write rebuttals to people like Greglawdawg, but his description of the Hamilton creek trail is exactly what most irritates me about some Mtn bike USERS! The trail is not DEAD, in fact it is the most USED trail in Nashville! That is the direct cause for it's condition, it is overused! The club is very actively involved in overseeing the maintainence as can be witnessed by the renewed mowing by Metro of the field sections and weedeating. There will be scheduled work days for maintaining and repairing problem areas coming in the next Harpeth newsletter. As far as doing something about it, get off you lazy butt and get involved in the work of maintaining what YOU ride dude! We are very available to you! You can contact me directly at swankmotee@hotmail.com if you want to complain to the source or join the club at wwwHarpethbikeclub.com. These trails that we volunteers worked so hard for many years to create and maintain are YOUR responsibility, so put up or shut up! And if you are unable to handle the level of ability it takes to ride Hamilton, then stick to Bowie wher you are sure not to hurt yourself!

I have to tell you, I didn't ride for like 3 years .. came back to Fairview to ride and was blown away. The Park Rangers have done a tremendous job of rebuilding the trails there and adding to them. Some people who only care about themselves have complained that they are particular about closing the trail when it's wet .. HERE HERE keep it up .. the trails are in great shape because they protect them from shredding when it's wet .. the word is some of the closed sections are about to be opened too ... They have fixed washed out sections IT's awesome to ride especially IF you go up the road to the start of the perimeter trail, take it to the dome .. it's about a mile loop that is awesome fun

This has, and always will be my favorite trail of the area. Thse people who say there is no singletrack are on crack. If you find the right loops in the woods, thats all there is. The trick is to park and ride your bike to the entrance and ride the trail that has the bike Xing signs and let it lead you into the woods, than a couple of miles later you go back onto the street and ride the road for about 300 feet and take the nice climb on the right side. If you enter next to the powerlines, youll most likley stay by the powerlines and ride crappy service roads, wich in fact,do suck horribly. This is my second review because I found that the end of the orange trail is really really rad. At the orange trailmarker towards the end of the red trail, it literally splits off into six different trails. though the arrow points the the woods to the right, the 2 paths behind you that lead back to the parkinglot are really really fast, twisty, rooty, and have some HUGE jumps, its just really hard to find them and they are really short. Overall fairview gets a 4 for putting around fun ability (if you find the right trails) 5 for the area, and five for the tips of the orange trail (man those were fun).

Ok, its not the most technical or demanding, but its my favorite trail in the area because its just FUN! Lots of fast rolling singletrack with some short semi-technical grinders, unless you take the powerline trail back to your car...then you wish for a 4 tooth granny ring. Just a great place to mess around in, and usually not excessively crowded. By the way, watch out for the gates on the powerline trails, you can smack right into them....and that cool looking jump after the first gate is DEATH!! Oh, theres a lot of horse crap on the trail.

Trail is comprised of several loops that return to the parking area so it would be difficult to get lost (you can always follow a power line trail to get back to the parking area). There are many short loops within the outside loop that are both fire road and single track, many of them are not mapped. Outside loop is almost 7.5 miles and mostly single track. Not very technical but the trail is fun and fast and includes shallow creek crossings. There are some nice downhill runs and no real difficult climbs. Only one short portion (1/2 mile max) was still closed due to downed trees on 9/11/99. Groups were in the process of cleaning up the trails that weekend. Best bet is to run the outside loop first then explore the smaller trails. Hours are dawn to dusk, call first to ensure trails are open...recorded message at 615/799-2484 ext 820.

Probably not a fair review since several sections of the trails were closed. Not real challenging. Trails for the most part are fairly wide with a lot of loose rocks. I would suggest taking plenty of water on hot days since there are areas that open up and you are in direct sun. Also, make a copy of the trail map to carry along with you because it's very easy to lose your way. I usually keep my bearings remembering where the powerlines are. Be careful if you choose to ride the powerline trail back to the parking area since there is one section that has a rather steep downhill and at the bottom of it is a gate that stays shut. Too much speed and Wham!

Fun, but not challenging. No real vertical and a bumpy track are its biggest short-comings. Because it is pretty easy you can push it as hard as you want. At least if you've got full suspension. I take beginners out here or FSF. The BIG whoopteedoo is a blast, but floods out a lot. This trail had some really sweet sections years ago, but they have degraded some. The creek crossings are infamous (the slick rocks will BITE you, it's like riding ice.) Don't get lost, there are three of four small lakes that look similar. One large trail which is for the beginner/intermediate rider and then many little horse trails. Large loop has 2 creek crossings which are extremely slippery, and if you have large mud tires can be VERY DANGEROUS!!! Many people have broken arms!!! Other than creek beds the loop is pretty nice and is mostly singletrack riding. There was once a 15 foot deep whoop-de-doo which was just recently flooded out and no longer exists. I am not sure what has been done as an alternate crossing. Large loop is ok, but the little loops are not very good, most will wind you through deep rutted open clay surface where you will be riding under huge "metal man" power line carriers which carry a high pitched signal that can sometime be disturbing. I don't recommend riding this trail too often just for the fact that it is boring!!!
