East Side Trails: This may not be a trail set you would travel to it is a great local ride. Plenty of ups and downs, good scenery and a variety of terrain. For Knoxville, a trail poor city, this is one of the bright spots. The well maintained single tracks (3' or 4' wide in spots) offer a good work out and plenty of opportunity for speed. A fit intermediate rider should be able to stay on the bike so it is not highly technical. The most challenging part of the trails are a few of the climbs, while not longer than a football field or so they are steep and traction can be an issue even in dry conditions.Lots of roots, boulders and an established forest make it a nice ride with a few lake views. Enjoy the ride.

Park Next to the pool and ride through the gate up the hill

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Haw Ridge, I.C. King Park, Panther Creek

This is a good ride if you are looking for a quick 1-2 hr ride of almost all singletrack. It is very tight in the summer and watch out for the poison ivy. Avoid riding here after a hard rain because the trails pretty technical and get very slick.

Thru the gate, make your first left and after about 3/4 mile turn left. Make that left do the loop, come back to the main trail and do the inner loop. Many possibilities...

Haw Ridge, I.C. King, Tsali, BSF NRA

Review:

I think this is overall the best trail in town. It's not as tough as Haw Ridge, yet has some nice singletrack and speedy downhills, and has some nice views of the lake. A great place for riding in town, and its not very crowded, usually. My wife bit it pretty hard here (hee hee) so its not her favorite place. You can do 3 loops in about 45 minutes. A nice place to show off your mtb skills without killing yourself! This is easy on the main trails, good intermediate on the loops and west side.

Go through the opening in the gate, at the east end of the parking lot. There are also some shorter trails across the driveway into the parking lot.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
IC King (expanded recently), Haw Ridge, Norris Dam

Review:

Be ready for some older dudes who seem to think they own the place. My friend and I were yelled at for riding too fast by an older, inspector gadget type biker....and told to wear helmets at all times in the parking lot by another, as we were leaving. It seemed like some sort of cult. As far as the trails go, it's not a bad place to ride if you live in Knoxville, but as far as driving over 30 miles or so, I wouldn't suggest it.

This trail has become a lot of fun, i would not call it begginer anymore. lots of quick up and downs, just a lot of fun and a good work out if you can ride the whole trail.

this trail system keeps getting longer, now there is like 8 or so miles of good single track. no big climbs but little short ones that make you hurt. a lot of fun. not worth driving a long distance to though.

Tom is correct about there being basically two loops - east and west. Each loop is 2 miles. Ride the west loop clockwise and the east loop counterclockwise for the most fun.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Haw Ridge, Lone Mountain (the ultimate in climbs)

Review:

Tom rates these trails as beginner trails. I'm not sure I agree with that. He may not have ridden all of the trail sections.

Park in the swimming pool lot. The east loop begins just inside the chain link fence with a climb up an old road. The west loop is across the street from the parking lot (the entrance was on your right as your entered the park). The entrance and exit for this loop are within 30 feet of each other. There is no sign (yet).

There are several technical sections on the west loop that most bikers with racing exprience don't make every time. The west loop generally takes 20 minutes to complete for an intermediate rider. The east loop, which opens with a 3 minutes climb, typically takes about 18 minutes. This includes the new section completed this past spring. These two loops provide the most non-stop, strenuous pounding of any 4 miles of trail I know of in Tenn. There is very little opportunity to rest/recover.

Beginners should take the east loop first and graduate to the west side. These trails will be lengthened again beginning in Dec, 2000.

Enjoy and email me if there are any trail maintenance needs.

Review:

the trail is easy, but fun and conveniently located in west knoxville. the eagles nest trail is easier, but goes by the lake, with a great downhill that you can get great speed on. the other trails on the other side are more challenging and more technical. its a fun trail to ride if you can't make it out to walden ridge, norris, or haw ridge. the only problem is that they are fairly short, so do a few laps!
