Little Colorado has all I need.

Review:

the TCMBA leases rights to the property from the Rankin County School System. It's pretty cheap to join and well worth the ride. You can pick up the forms at the BIKE RACK on Lakeland, which is a good idea, it's not cheap to fend off the vandals, motorcycles or 4-wheelers, and... it's been said before, the area is hurting for good trails and this one is a keeper. If you look you'll find it here, as Xtreme as you wanna b. Have fun! If ur a newbie, try Forest Hill this one has some bite.

Wow... no reviews in 16 months...

I used to ride out here about 6/7 years ago when I used to live in Jackson. Not much has changed, except that there is less land, a little less trail, and a lot more maintenance, signs of life and maps all over the place. I stopped by the Bike Rack on Lakeland and picked up a pass for $5 for 2 days. After riding for around an hour, I had ridden the whole system, and started to double back on the trails, getting in another 40 minutes of ride time before unclipping my foot for the first time in 100 minutes. It was fun, and pretty much how I remembered it except for some little 2X4 bridges added at some little stream crossings - which are not a bad idea considering what the water looks like, and that "lagoon" - ever hopped the fence to see what was in it?

Little Colorado is an easy trail system, but the sand can get in your way every so often and "squirm" under your tires. Since it is rolling hills and twisty turns in the trees, it can be a lot of fun. Kudos to the TCMBA guys for keeping this area open and maintaining it so well - the Jackson area is hurting for trails, and this is a real gem considering the area. It's also nice not to have the 4 wheelers and motorcycles out there tearing everything up, anymore. Anybody can come out here and have fun. I am giving it a good rating because it is well maintained and a real treat for this area, even though it is not technical.

None--check out the Orange Trail, White Trail, Chainring, The Four Bitches, and many other trails

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Clear Springs, Tishkill in Bienville N.F., Forest Hill in Jackson for good beginner trail.

Review:

Good riding, sometimes sandy, pretty hilly with a few steep climbs. Many options for up to about 15 miles without repeating yourself a lot. Just a clarification on the last post--you can get a 2 day TCMBA membership at the bike shops for $5 so if you are in town or just want to check it out you dont have to be a full member.

Exit I-55 onto Lakeland Dr. Go East 20 minutes or so to Northwest Rankin Middle School.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Trails with no use fees: Forest Hills (Jackson), Ghost Trails (Hattiesburg), Fruit Loops (Oxford), and Bonita Lake (Meridian)
Clear Springs has a daily fee, but it is nominal and the trails are great.

Review:

I just wanted to post some updates to this trail, as nothing has been added in awhile. First of all, the trail access is now limited to members only of Tri-County Mountain Bike Association. This is due to agreements with the school board, which did indeed mind bikes being on the land. The trails were closed for most of the summer, with several riders being ticketed for trespassing. Many locals worked hard to get the limited access that is now enjoyed; unfortunately, again due to Northwest Rankin school board writs, non-members will be asked to leave the trails and must be reported to the school board. Unfortunately, this problem is becoming all too common for mountain bikers and breaking the rule only exacerbates the issue. TCMBA is an open club, accepting membership freely, so please call any bike shop in town for a membership form. Most of this is probably due to insurance liability, but the school board is serious; if we want to keep these trails open in any capacity, we must abide by their rules. So, find a friend in Jackson with a TCMBA membership and come out to play!

Go down Lakeland Dr. from the interstate a long ways(at 10mph over the speed limit about 20 min.).Once you see North West Rankin High school, you are about a mile from the trail head. Keep going until you reach North west Rankin middle school and park in their parking lot. The entrance to the school is across from the trail.

First off, the trail is technically closed. But no one minds bicycles, only quads and dirt bikes will they get mad at.

Mainly wooded single track trail, with many roots. Not for begginers. Good for intermediate and skilled riders. Many trails, no need to cover the same trail twice in one visit (or 5 for that matter) Few nice down hills (and then uphills, some of the hilliest terrian in Mississippi.) When it rains, there is lots of mud in lower spots, but for the most part it drains well. Lots of sand (be careful in the corners). Make sure your bike is in good condition when going to this trail. Good rear mud tire would be very helpful(we learned that the hard way). NOT THE BEST TRAIL FOR A STIFF FRAME!!! We would be dead by now. 2 front suspended bikes, 1 full, 4 stiffs, the stiffs were always behind. Good views for stoping places. One large cliff looking over large sand pit (many acres), this is where the quads and dirt bikes mainly ride (you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it). The cliff gives a great view of trees for miles. Some pretty good jumps on the trail (one natural made BMX style course along one of the single track trails.) A decently fast paced trail (for the experienced rider). Don't show up without a helment (Crashs are almost inevitable). Watch out for low hanging limbs along the trail (they hurt). Just remember that it isn't totaly legal, no one really minds bikes riding there.

It is with great frustration that I must report that this trail is no longer available for mountain bike use. It is marked "No Trespassing".

These trails are on a piece of "16 Section" land. These "16 section" blocks of land are owned by the county school boards, apparently across Mississippi.

Until recently, the school board had allowed people to ride these trails. But they have recently elected to lease either mineral or timber rights. So I don't know if the school board or the lesee has posted it "No Trespassing", but a local bike shop owner told me that you are fairly likely to be caught if you ride, they are policing the trails, and you might very well be arrested for trespassing.

Sad development.

If anyone knows any other details of around this issue, please post them.

Review:

These trails are really fun, yet pretty demanding. There are lots of climbs, but there are downhills to follow, so it's all good! The terrain varies from sandy to pretty hard-packed in areas. There are several jumps and a few fast downhills. It's not uncommon for me to finish up a ride with a max speed of 29+ mph. Overall, the trail system drains very well after a rain, holding water in only a few places. For the most part, the trails are technical, although some pozers are trying to straighten some of the corners, which lowers the level of difficulty somewhat.
Overall, the trails are a lot of fun and are the best by far in the Jackson area. Oh, in response to "Baron's" review, I don't ride like I'm drunk, I just like to go really fast and jump high!

Head northeast on Hwy 25 (Lakeland Drive) away from Jackson. It's a pretty good ways out. You will pass the airport road (where the movie theater is) and still have a little ways to go. Past the Jitney Premier, you are getting closer. Anyway as others have said, you will see Northwest Rankin High School on your right. Go to the second break in the median (neutral ground for all y'all from New Orleans) and turn left into the dirt road/parking area. The trail is pretty obvious from there.

The only other trail I have ridden in the area is sort of illegal (I think) so I will respect the wishes of the forum and not mention it by name. I will say it is a fairly easy/enjoyable more beginner-suited trail located along the pearl river and will be glad to give more details to anyone who wants them and e.mails me.

Review:

I have ridden this trail once (yesterday) and am still a bit sore. :-) I guess I could probably be best classified as a beginner. I have not been able to ride much lately, and have allowed myself to get in pretty bad shape. This trail kicked my ass. I think someone in better shape, with more experience would handle it better. Don't get me wrong though, I intend to return, because though my ass and scrotum are sore, I really did have a pretty good time.

It is basically a bunch of rutty, rooty, rocky, hilly, sandy single track, with some nice scenery. Take some water for sure and if you're a fatty like me, be prepared to stop for a breather now and then, and also be prepared to get off and push the bike up a hill or two. If you aren't a fatty like me, you will probably be able to stay in the saddle for the most part.

Also, the trail was dry for the most part, but there were several very wet areas.

Have fun

Take the new dirt road (probably won't be dirt for long) until you see a trail to the left. Take the first singletrack on the left once you get to the woods. Wednesdays at ~4:30 or so, group ride meets at the church about a mile past the school.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Forest Hill
Pearl River trails (can be very wet, though)
Meridian (Bonita Lakes...similar to LC, a little more tame)
Clear Springs is supposed to be incredible, but I've never been there.

Review:

Miles and miles of good, technical singletrack. Hillier than you would expect from Mississippi. So some of the trails are rough, but not too bad. You can have several hours of hard, fun riding without having to double back much. It's just a big web of singletrack and jeep trails. It's easy to get lost, so check with the Bike Rack on Lakeland Dr. about a group ride or some directions.

To reiterate a previous post, beginners should try Forest Hill or Pearl River for a more enjoyable experience. Brave beginners and intermediates should find these trails challenging. Experts will love it. These trails also dry quickly--rain in the morning, ride in the afternoon.

Overall, this is the best riding I think you'll find in central MS.

Go to Northwest High school on Hwy.25 N.(lakeland drive) out of Jackson. Park at the school, unload and turn right on 25 for about a quarter mile. be carefull crossing the four lane and hit the red sandy logging road going uphill to the right. As soon as the hill crests at in the cutover you'll see the trail head.try to remember the way you go or you'll ride around for a couple of miles trying to find your way.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Westbrook trails on the Pearl river. Go to the Sports club on Westbrook Rd. just off of OLd Canton Rd. Trails begin at the entrance of the Westbrook Estates, just to the left of the main gate.

Review:

This unusual riding area is slowly being developed so we don't know how much more riding there will be. There is one wide trail circling the entire area for a 3 mile run, open and fast. There are many singletrack loops crisscrossing the main loop. About a mile in on the main loop there is a scinic overlook cliff that looks out into a large sand dune area. The singletrack is winding and hilly. There is a big revine crossing called Devil's gorge and there are a series of runoffs where the trail keeps crossing known as the MOTHERS. Because they are a mother to climb, But lots of fun to descend the downfaces.Great looking forests with mixed hardwoods and big oaks.Try this area and you will not be disappointed. Beginners beware. Intermediates are challenged, and Experts race. The Bike Rack is on lakeland dr. just about 6 miles into flowood by the Ice park, for other information. Happy Trails
