  Ghost Trails

Location:

Mississippi

Nearest Town:

Hattiesburg

Directions to Trailhead:

I-59 to hattiesburg, This puts you on hardy street, take 40th street. Go through first stop sign. After this stop sign, these trails run through nearly every inch of the woods to the left. The greatest DH of the trails starts at the FIRST entrance to Baywood cove subdivision. They have plenty of room to park at their entrance. right behind the "Baywood Cove" sign, to the left, is where this trail begins. It's straight DH for about a mile. then it twists and turns, goes up and down, and has many different paths to get lost in. Just stay aware of the area around you, 40th will always be to your left.

From I-59, take the hardy St. offramp and take the first right onto 40th ave. Take 40th all the way to Richburg Rd and take a right. Cross the bridge over '59 and look for a power station on the left. There is plenty of room to park here and you don't run into any "issues" with the local property owners. Also, the Power Lines are right across the street, so you can ride them first all the way to the new Lincoln Road Extension, then loop back around and hit the Ghost Trail off 40th.

These were some pretty good trails, but development is going to put the kibosh on them before long. There are some pretty neat technical spots here, and the uphills with all those roots will leave you gritting your teeth. The descents are nice, and in some places you can just about fly, just watch out for fallen logs, because some of them are pretty big. It would be neat to get a group of folks together and do some maintenance on this trail before it gets swallowed up by the developers. Some ramps built onto the fallen trees would be cool, as well as the installation of a waterbar or two in the areas that are prone to washouts.

I used to live in Hattiesburg and ride this area. However, I have been back only 3 or 4 times in the last year to this trail.

These trails used to be good but there are some many homes that have been build that have cut off much of the trails. You will get tired of this trail in about 30 minutes.

Take 40th off of Hardy (main road) turn left before apartments, park adjacent to turn arrows.

These trails were fun! They were rather difficult. Lots of steep Ups and Downs and ROOTS! Roots aren't always bad, they are the closet things to rocks in Mississippi. If this is your 1st time riding your trail, you may or may not choose to heed these words: Proceed with caution. These trails are tricky.

Its hard to recommend a route here, there are about 8 possible singletrack loops that are just as fun either way you ride them. It also depends on how comfortable you are climbing hills and handling big sections of roots and hills together???

Follow 40th avenue off of hardy street till you almost come to the end of the ave. There is a small apartment complex on your left, the trails begin right before the apartments. There are some good up and downhill sections and a killer section of roots on the first(upper)part of the trails. It can be a slow technical process getting past the roots. To avoid the section with all the roots you can take a loop that starts to your left before you come down the hill to the roots, youll see it im sure.....the problem with this section is that is a continuous up and downhill singletrack that can get difficult...it is also a longer route. The trails intersect again and take an easy downhill to a 4 way trail intersection, the trail loop to the left is short and kind of difficult with a quick/short dropoff that you must immediately turn and pedal uphill once you get to the bottom...If you take a right at the 4 way trail intersection it leads to a longer fast downhill with a nice climb afterwards and an easy but fairly "rooted" section....If you continue forward at the intersection it is an easy downhill and then the trails begin to intersect again and the trail still continues downhill to another rooted section then onto a paved walking path...cross the wooden bridge then back onto singletrack to the right with more fun roots ...then an uphill to another intersection of trails.. start in on this second section with about 4 or 5 loops, some good downhills,a bit more sandy sections, and less roots from here on out but still just as much fun as the first part and just as much trail to explore......

Park at Richburg 1 Stop, they have several parking spots open. Start on the trail directly across the street. This will bring you out on 40th, next section of trials begin across 40th to the left of the appartments.

Stop by Hattiesburg Bicycle and talk to Nancy or Drew, they have maps to all the local trails.

Review:

There are tons of off shoots on these trails I have been ridding here every other day for the last couple of weeks and while you go over some of the same stuff there is plenty to keep you entertained. Its a lot of fun and has some technical stuff. I encourage Exploration, you cant really get lost if you remember where 40th is. Heck your in the middle of Hattiesburg you'll come out somewhere on some street.

This trail can get hairy and there are a few places novice riders might want to be very cautious, if its your first time take it easy or go with someone who knows the trails.
