Spruce Creek

  Spruce Creek

Location:

Florida

Nearest Town:

New Smyna

Directions to Trailhead:

Note: I got these off of mtbinfo site and this is from Orlando. SR 44 exit off of I-95 gets you there to. Take I-4 to exit 56 at DeLand (SR 44). Take 44 east and go under I-95. Just past I-95 turn left on Sugar Mill Dr.then left on Pioneer Trail. Turn right on Turnbull Bay and left on the first dirt road on left (Martin Dairy Rd.). Follow Martin Dairy Rd. and park where you see trails going off in to the woods on the right. This is at the end of road...couple miles.

Trail Description:

Loop of about 5-10 miles depending on if you find all the trails. It follows a small stream to begin with and runs up and down the bank. Lots of switchbacks and roots. It then follows Spruce Creek untill it goes inland where you will find lots of windy singletrack and some tight squeezes for my 26.5" handlebars. I suppose you could jump in Spuce Creek if you had the inclination to swim in very brown water, maybe in the middle of summer when its REALY hot.

Trail Length:

5-10 miles

Trail Type:

Singletrack

Skill Level:

Intermediate

Left trail AKA "Tim Buck trail"

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Canaveral Seashore, Hammock trail

Review:

The ride to the end is worth it...A great view of the Spruce Creek river. The trails are fun, well maintained, unique, and in some areas challenging. Plenty of wildlife to be seen in the area too. If you take the "Tim Buck" trail to the end and the battery trail to the main trail back to the parking lot (4.98 miles), you won't have trouble with navigation. If you don't know the area, it could be very easy to get lost due to the many trail intersections and tempting trail splits. The roots are pretty fun and at times your handle bars will barely squeeze through the trees (Tim Buck trail).

I would suggest riding with a friend while here...I ride this trail once or twice per month and have never seen anyone else here! If you were to get hurt it would be tough to get help quickly.

My friend from DeLand guided us in to the trailhead, I might be able to find it again using the wonderful landmarks like the "Cabbage Patch".

Yesterday was the first time that I road this trail. Hard packed, not too sandy except under the powerlines and not too aggressive like Hard Rock (I love to ride but I'm not a young cannonball anymore). I had a great ride, picked up a bunch of speed on some of the downhills and only had a little bit of trouble with navigation around the trails. Some of the tricky areas are back in the number 6, 8, 10, and 11 trails at the junctions, otherwise I had a good day and would drive out again for the ride. They should build a rope swing out over the river.

This trail was pretty nice overall. The sand made things a little difficult in places but once you find your way past it the trail becomes more user friendly. My only complaint would be the lack of markings on the trails, I think I spent the good part of 30mins trying to find my way back to my truck.

route listed works fine. You park where the road ends and that's where the trailhead is.

This is a really fun trail. Tight, twisty singletrack that's pretty fast when it hasn't been dry. A good amount of climbing since the trails wind up and down the 30 feet or so of elevation change (a mountain for this part of Florida) quite frequently. Reasonably tight and technical, newbies may have to step off every now and then but otherwise it's all middle chainring. Avoid the straight wide trails, mostly sugar sand. The trail isn't marked and the map at the trailhead is kinda useless, so heed the advice to always make left hand turns, otherwise you can get lost easily - On my first two rides I found myself somewhere in the middle with two empty water bottles and not a clue... Anyway, great trail, tons of fun!

I have been riding off road now for alittle more than 2 years. I rode this trail about 6 months after I started and for some reason I don't remember it being so enjoyable as when my wife and I were there last week. She just started and it is a great thing to have your spouse involved. There are some pretty good spots to test your skills and raise your heart rate. The scenery is beautiful and lots of little creatures to watch as well. I think I am going to go back soon. I do recommend this place. If you take your time you can get a real good 5 - 6 mile loop out of it without hitting to much sand. Enjoy.

If you take only left turns this should work out to be about a 6-7 mile loop. In the dry times this place SUX!!!!! But after a good rain, this place is really fast and alot of fun. Very tight singletrack mostly. Some good size logamids. And a couple of challenging 2-3 foot jumps/ dropoffs. This is the first trail i rode when i started biking so maybe i'm partial to this one, give it a shot after the rain comes , and i know you'll love it . If your looking for a challenging trail this is it. some really neat overlooks out onto Spruce Creek. Lots of roots so either have knowledge on how to handle roots or, have a full suspension bike.

gets your heart rate going with all the sugar sand, roots and small hills.you can set up a good 6 mile loop without doubling back on the same trail.we named certain sections of trail for reference points.crustation trail, batery trail, turnaround point, horse trail, powerline hill, powerline trail, tight twisty.
after a rain fall, this place is excellent!
full suspension trail over a hard tail for the fun factor.

Like said before take a left all the time and you should do fine.

There arent many other trails in this area, Palm Coast just north of Daytona Beach in Flagler county used to be the closest but it seems that trail has disappeard after the fires during the summer of 98. If you dont mind a drive, there is a place called Little Econ state park out towards Orlando, and some VERY fun trails out near Ocala.

Review:

This is a great track, the best in the area, can get technical in some areas. I would'nt recommend this track when it has been dry for a period of time, the trail can go from fun to sugar sand very quickly.
Well Maintained, and a main fire road if you will goes through in case of an emergency or you have to leave for some reason.

Everything out there except for the horse trails is fun. Trails are not well marked. Starting from the trail head, if you take a left at every fork you see, you will actually cover about 2/3 of the trails out there before you run out of singletrack.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Econ (Snow Hill Rd.), Deleon Springs, Environmental Center

Review:

There is a surprising amount of elevation for a trail this close to the east coast. Some of the trails along the Spruce Creek bluffs are the most technical I've seen just about anywhere. If its been dry for awhile the trails can get a bit sandy. This is a great place to go if Florida has been getting a lot of rain. The rain packs down the singletrack nicely, and it doesn't flood out or get muddy like a lot of other trails in central Florida. Hurricanes Floyd and Irene added a bunch more logs to hop over. Thanks to those guys who cleaned up after the hurricanes. You did a great job. The trails are in pretty good shape now.

If ur coming fm orlando also turn left off of 44 to CR118, that turns into pioneer trail and save u little time. if ur coming fm the north, take 95 to 44 u know the rest.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Little Big Econ(snohill)crowded,sandy- good riding
Enviromental center- nice but small

Review:

I ride this trail every week, maybe 2-3 times a week. We just finished cleaning up after floyd and irene and the trails couldn't be any better, so get out now or it's bound to get sandy. There is still a few downed trees but there is ways around them. My little chainsaw couldn't handle some the big jobs. About the trails, there is basically two loops, one east and one west. I wish i could explain them here but there is just too many trails crossing each other. All i know that these trails are some the best around, a little bit of hill, a little sand (in some places)roots, tight turns, headhunters, log crossings, and a very sweet singletrack(xc fast). we just need to build some more.

Palm Coast is fun,if it is still there

Review:

I grew up (i mountain biking) riding this trail. I havve ridden every trial in North East Fla., and this is the most technically demanding trail I've seen. Very sandy at times, not too many spiders, horse trails make it confusing. LOTS OF ROOTS! If you want to hone in on your skills, this is the place. If not, stay away! There is a lot of sand, roots, no maintenence.
