Coming from South Florida, we take the Florida Turnpike to S.R. 301, and then follow it out to 27. Hang a left and just past the highway patrol station in the middle of the road, you'll see the signs for the trailhead.

This is definitely worth the 3 hour drive!!! We now have a dedicated group of friends who make the drive every other month and the skill levels range from experienced to absolute beginner. The guys (experienced) take off on the blue & red, and us girls (advanced intermediate - me, intermediate & beginner) headed for the yellow trails until our beginner was comfortable, then did all the blues and even a red or two, although my companions had to get off and do the rock crawl thing. Excellent trails for everyone, it is our favorite out-of-town trail. We stick to the fort pierce trail for our twice weekly rides, but this is the place for everyone to really get their groove on! Pack a cooler, some lunch & bring your chairs, and you'll have a shady spot in the parking lot to recharge the batteries. Bring insect repellent, especially if you are allergic to deer fly bites - they swarm once the weather is warmer, no matter how fast you are riding.

Review:

Some of the absolute sickest drpos I have ever seen and done. Went there this past weekend along with Razorback. Santos' Red Trails are a bit more geared towards freeride/hucks where Razorback is more XC. There are a few drops there that you absoutley CANNOT roll into. You have to launch & shoot for the tranny towards the bottom. When you ride towards the pits the scenery looks a bit more like a mini-Utah than Florida. The yellow trails are almost totally flat, where the blues mix it up a bit. Reds are for those who are not afraid of flailing themselves off small cliffs.

My only complaint of this trail is although it is well marked for degree of difficulty, directionally there is almost no markings at all. That makes it tough for the "out of towners" to make their way west towards the land bridge section. Virtually every trail somehow leads you back to where you were before. It would be nice to have a "Suggested Route of Travel" so that those unfamiliar with the trails can make the most of it. Either that or get a guided ride from someone from OMBA :-)

Start off at the circular trail head. Head down Dr. Ruth (blue), at the first junction head straight up the small hill, then stay to the left (the Gravel pit is in front of you) and follow the blue trail to the back area. Follow the back area blue trail until you are ready to head back.

This is the most fun I have ever had riding a bike! I equate it to a small "Galaxy" roller coaster at the smaller theme parks. Lots of turns, bends, banked curves, and small slopes. The occasional tree roots and small rocks add challege and fun. Great for all skill levels. Best for moderate to advanced bikers.

I go to this trail a couple times a week. The trails are GREAT! Tons of thrills and excitement. Trails range from begginer to expert. From easy bumps and tree roots to almost vertical hills and rocks, this trail has everrything. These trails take at least a little bit of skill but for the most part the yellow trails are simple. There is a huge sinkhole in the center of the park which brings steep hills and beautiful sights which u don't even have to go into to see. From the edge of the sinkgole you can scope out the terrain and decide if u are skilled enough to enter it. The ride down may be fun but it also bring a few pains trying to get out. All in All this park is a 10 on my scale.

Review:

Can you say, "Sweet Ass Sweet!"? Yeah, the trails were that good. Like I said before, I had a beginner with me (second ride) and had to take it easy on him. Therefore, I didn't get to hit many of the red trails. The trails are marked great. Red for the technical (experienced riders), blue for the intermediate skilled riders, and yellow for your girlfriends or beginners.

I don't know any of the trail names, we just got out there and rode. We had to stick to the Blue and Yellow trails with an occassional foray into the Red (accidentally on purpose). Like I said, I had a newbie with me! We found the pits with the awesome jumps and drops. I have to say that some of the drops looked very inviting with my 12 years of motocross background. Unfortunately, my bike is a Giant NRS 2 and I would have broken it in half doing some of the drops. I weigh in at 230 lbs. I need a stronger bike and some body protection before I do the sick drops. I did get to ride down some of the steep stuff, did some of the BC tree plank riding, teeter totters (a first) and some of the elevated plank riding. Got some good pictures. I saw some of the pits with the old cars in them. Basically, the trails are great. Next time I'm gonna ride some of the Red trails and see how much better it gets. These trails would be very dangerous night riding if you don't know them. Can you picture yourself riding along and dropping off one of the 20' drops. Ouch! But, other than that, a good place to night ride.

You can take a beginner to these trails as well as a very experienced rider. Just remember Red, Blue, and Yellow trail markers.

Oh yeah, I saw some wild boar piglets. Got out of there because mama pig might have been close by.

I read the comments on this website a couple of days ago, before I actually rode the trail myself. I though people were exagerating on how great this trail was, but I found out that it is all that and a sack of patatoe chips. The santos trail at bellview is the funnest ride you can have in florida without a doubt. The trail is beautifully maintained, and offers a great variety of technical challenges for the begginer all the way up to the $3,000 bike owner.
The trail or better yet trails are set in different loops within the same trail. Here youll find 40ft drops, small wooden bridges, hidden benches, and a great views of the sorrounding forest. The only bad thing about this trail is leaving it. I think I'm addicted to mountain biking thanks to the Santos trail. Well anyways this place is most defenetly worth a 2 hour drive, the expenses (gas, food, etc) that come with it, and skipping school for.

Many to choose from - all skill levels - broken down into the following catagories: Red - Extreme, most difficult (Technical and very rocky - may involve a steep hill); Blue - Intermediate (fast and fun with some good obsticles and milder hills); Yellow - Easiest (mostly fast cross country trails, little hills). My personal favs include the Vortex (tough red with great view overlooking pit), Twister (fun baby hills and tight corners - sprint it from start to finish), Spider Kingdom (when you're in the mood to put in some miles), The red trail on the back side of the Other Side's main pit (don't know the real name of the trail but it's great fun - has the one way climb and the steep downhill), Anthill (still a favorite and getting harder with the rain exposed rocks), Cowbone/Sinkhole/Marshmellow (another old favorite - making the hill on cowbone is tougher every time - getting very washed out, Sinkhole is fun and techical, Marshmellow is big sproket fast), and so many more...

I work only a few miles from Santos, so I usually ride it after work about twice a week and once on the weekends and have been doing so for about 3 years. You could say I'm pretty familiar with the place. In all the time I've riden here I've never gotten bored - it's still awesome. This is indeed one of the best trail systems the state has to offer. So many options!

This year's rainy season has taken a toll on the trails. Many trails have been impacted. Some fun hills have been turned into giant ruts. Overgrowth is everywhere - so thick I've been pulled off my bike by branches over the trails or crashed on rocks I couldn't see from having my vision blocked by growth. Big loose rocks are everywhere making downhills tricky and climbs harder. Many trails have clay mixed in and with the rains have been slick for months (when will the Vortex ever dry out completely?) - expect alot of spinning back tires on the slick hills and rocks.

I recently renewed my OMBA membership (Ocala Mountain Bike Association) and placed myself on the trail maintanence list. I encourage other locals to do the same. Hopefully we can remedy some of the negatives of this first class mountain bike park.

After your ride, make sure to stop in B.D. Beans in Belleview (next to KFC) for an awesome meal and cappacino/expresso. They have outdoor seating so you don't have to stink up the place after a hard ride. Best food around! Also, don't forget about Santos Bike Shop near the trailhead if you need supplies for your ride (or a new bike).

Review:

I’ve been going to Santos for 3 years now (soon with camping)– it’s the most overall perfect mountain bike playground in the state… (it could be air conditioned but you get the point). It is not a single track like Razorback or Hard Rock, its more along the lines of 30 something variable trails that all intertwine around two huge limestone pits.

First Pit at the bottom of Ruth/Cowbone has “Magic Mountain”, “Ant Hill” has some awesome drops, difficult stone trails and short climbs. Be careful of others, I know a guy who broke an arm climbing a hill as someone was coming down. These trails are pretty much on a red/blue level. Watch the trails first time through, some end at cliff drops. A yellow trail rims the whole pit leaving the “Ruth” parking lot.

“Bunny Trail” connects to the second pit (which is the 25th Street parking lot during construction). The second pit rocks. A bike playground of see-saws are in front of a red section with log bridges, whoops and “The Wall”. To the left of the main pit is another smaller pit with a huge drop (which can be ridden both ways, 25mph going up) to the side is a chasm with rusted cars in it. It braches off to trails and a rock garden with a huge boulder climb.

Enter the big pit and head up to the red trails around the rim. Best bet is the quick climb on the left side that ends at the rusted out Pinto then work the trails to the right. Outside the pit and inner ring of red trails is a dirt road of sorts. The outside edge of the road has blue trails and the entrance to the “Spider Kingdom” trail that rolls on past I-75 (20 miles?)

I have never had a bad day at Santos. I’ve broken bikes, watches, knees, chains, spokes, wheels, helmets at Santos during Summer, Winter.. sand, mud, rain and rocks. I’ve shed my share of blood on its phosphate (makes for beautiful scars). Every time I go there I find one more challenge I thought I couldn’t do on the last trip… I see someone do something I though couldn’t be done the time before.

It’s very hard to get lost. This place is something for everyone – you choose the color. If you find something you like circle back on it and do it again. Santos doesn’t make you follow a set trail but do notice a few red trails have arrows that mark entrance or exits for your safety. If you fall, get up quick in case you land in an ant bed. Watch for snakes after heavy rains.

I give this place a 5 for all levels(unless you have training wheels - then stay home)

One word can describe this trail: HUGE. Wish I had more time to explore the whole place. I only spent a couple of hours there and I was very impressed. Lots of twisty/turny blue trails to get yo groove on. Although, the reds didn't seem that difficult, some of the drops in the quarry were insane. Being from South Florida, I was hoping for a little more of a step up from Markham, Oleta, and JDSP. But I found Santos to be on par with the above trails in level of difficulty. Again, maybe with some more time to explore, I'll find the good stuff!

This place is loads of fun. I rode this trail once last year and had to come back. The first time I rode this place I only rode on the east side of the road. It was very challenging but I left wanting more. This time I spent alot more time and road most of the trails out there. OMBA is doing a great job with these trails. Fast wooded sections, technical sections, stunts and some crazy freeride areas. People that criticize Florida for weak trails have not ridden here. Spend a day and get lost... its easy to find your way back.

These trails rock...... you can ride fast & steady on the yellows & blues then head for the reds and be prepared to get your butt off the back of the seat cuz there are some steep sections.

You can head to the land bridge that crosses I-75 (from the parking lot on 80th it is just under 25 miles round trip) Great for training or just relaxing.

I love riding there... just fabulous series of trails.

I would encourage you all to join OMBA for $20 it will help ensure the trails are maintained and supplies are available to maintain them.

I have been in gainesville for about a month and we have ridden the santos trail 3 times. This is probably the best trail to ride in the area with it's steep terrain. These trails offer everyone a chance to ride, from the beginner to the most expierienced.
Our first trip out here we took a few hard falls and got pretty banged up. Be careful when approaching the canyon, there are plenty of places where you could be seriously injured. On our most recent trip this past weekend (sept. 15th) the trails were littered with branches from tropical storm Gabrielle. It was a mess to ride but we still had a good time except for me and my friend Joey Cox getting swarmed by yellow jackets. we were stung about 10 times each. Park either at the Santos Trailhead right off of 441 or drive a little farther down, turn left onto 25th street, and park a ways down on your right (by the gate). All of the trails are a great time especially compared to what exists to ride in the rest of this state. Lots of hard-packed dirt and limestone to ride on; certain sections very technical, short uphills, jumps, drops, lots of loops around the quarries. BIG, ugly downhill leads into the quarry on the other side of 25th (if you park at the bathrooms); have a friend that broke both arms, head injury, etc.... and had to be airlifted out of there. Went there last weekend and watched a kid try to ride it and paralyze himself from the chest down as the result of going over his handlebars and crushing headfirst into the rock. Helicopter came and airlifted him too after we had to shade his body and hold him still while he bled all over the ground from his skull and was spitting out pieces of his teeth. LOOK AT ALL OF THE BIG DROPS FROM THE BOTTOM BEFORE YOU TRY TO RIDE THEM. There have been lots of people who were seriously hurt on some of these. Lots of fun, but recognize your limits.

Pretty good run, I expected more climbs and downhills considering it was further north but all in all not a bad trail. Some sandy spots but what can you do since we live on a big sand island. The quarry was definitely the highlight, some very steep drops and lots of loose rocks to crack your head on. I do not recommend that section to beginners but the reszt of the trail is fine for those less experienced. Take a lot of water because you can spend a while on this trail. Stumbled on the beginning of a little forest fire and were run out by the police so I wish we could have stayed longer. I will definitely go back there but still think Markham and Oleta are better rides.

THis was a great trail, but this is more of a question. A few months ago in BIKE magazine, they talked about a connector trail that would go over i-75 and connect to another trail. I am planning another trip over there and I am wondering if it is completed and if so, what is it called. Thanks.

For those of you who have never been to Santos or can't remember, here's how you get there from the south (don't pay any attention to most of the other directions that are posted...):

Whether you're already on US441/27 or US 301 from the Turnpike, TAKE US 441/27 north out of Belleview (head toward Ocala). Shortly after you leave the city limits of Belleview, the median of US441/27 will split and go around a sh*tload of trees in the center median. There's a Sherriff's Station located at the northern end of this wooded median (you'll see a sign that says Santos with an arrow pointed east or to the right -the direction you DONT want to go) Take a left at the Sherriff's office (SE 80th Street) and then look for the sign on the left just a few hundred feet from US441/27. Then go past the sh*thouse and park in the back field.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
No. But I have another comment about Santos...there's a lot of good riders out there, which makes the trails easier to read, which equates to kicking ass...I would imagine that beginner to intermediate riders would benefit by riding these lines, but need to know when to say no.......and make sure your brakes are adjusted/comfortable and keep an extra set of pads in your purse...

Review:

Screw the map...get on your bike and ride and ask questions later...I enjoyed the map after I got home with cookies and milk and a crayon only to try to figure out where I rode...

There's something out there for every skill level/ preference. I liked the Dr Ruth, then to what I call "the first sandpit" then a red to the bottom and out the far side. Then hook-up to the right with Twisty and/or Snake The names aren't marked, so it really doesn't matter what they're called, unless you want to impress the babes -plus you're goin so f***king fast all ya have time to look for is a blue or red post! I loved these cuz I love to turn corners with only a tap of the brake. Past moto-x experience really pays off here.

Chances are, you'll end-up over at SE 25th Street, where you cross and go along a gravel road. Look for the big ant pile on the left (25 ft?), with a couple of tabletops on one side and steep downhill on the other. Kick-ass no matter what direction you're headed and then just maintain once you're up there.
Then head toward the pit by taking a left onto a blue which takes you to the tops of some reds on the far side. Lots of rocks...seems the trick is to figure out which ones move/roll and which ones don't. Some of the red uphills are easier than they look. Just do em' early in the day and know when to quit or bail.

Santos really turns me on, and there were lots of babes out there too. I've ridden everything in Tallahassee over the past 6 years and know it like the back of my hand, but to have such varying conditions all this in one place is unique.

On U.S. 441 in Ocala, find a 7-11, Walgreen or similar storefront...buy map...find where S.E. 80th Street is and turn there where the Sheriff's Department is. If you don't find the trail entrance on the left within 0.2 miles, or you run across railroad tracks, you've turned the WRONG WAY!!! Go across U.S. 441 again and you're there!!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
I'm only familiar with those in the Jacksonville area...ride Crusty Knuckle for intermediate singletrack for those in J'ville. Hanna Park's fine too, but not as technical.

Review:

This is my first ride at Santos, so my experience here was limited to just one full day... Overall, the trails are simply terrific, but it may leave some with an unusual impression. The Yellow "beginner" trails are just plain easy; simple, flat, relatively sandy open trails with no obstacles to block your way. They truly are a great way to introduce a young child, mother or true novice to off-road mountain biking. They also provide a quick exit to get back to the parking lot if your in a hurry to leave or if you can't find your way back for some reason...definitely a bonus!
With the exception of two Blue trails found on "The Other Side", the Blue intermediate trails are somewhat hard to justify as a true "intermediate" rating. The Blue trails are wide open, have few obstacles to clear, and were very easy to negotiate with little skill involved. For the most part, almost all Blue trails were just too easy to warrant a blue marker. To OMBA's credit, however, the trails were all in fantastic condition, and were still extremily fun, especially if you like to go fast! We still had a great time on them.
Then came the RED trails...DAMN!! The trails went from relatively easy to, "...uhh, there is absolutely NO WAY I can make that!!!" Or better yet..."I'm gonna' DIE!!" The Red trails, which descend into two separate phosphate pits, are difficulty, rocky, steep and technical. Not all, but most. There's one drop I swear is 25 feet and at a 70 degree angle! Sure, you "North Shore" guys might laugh, and there are riders here with enough skill to do this sort of stuff, but these are as hard as anything in Florida. Of course, if you've got the skill or your just plain crazy, just be smart and use a quality full-suspension bike and full-face helmet. If not, I hope you know a good Orthopaedic or Neurosurgeon...you'll need one!!
There's a trail called the Spider Kingdom behind the second phosphate pit as well, but we didn't have time to ride it unfortunately. From what I understand though, it's a true Blue intermediate singletrack that runs for some 15-20 miles or so. Sounds like a go to me!

Bottom Line...These trails are worth your time and effort to reach them. Many thanks to the members of OMBA who maintain the trails; Excellent job. Got any Bacitracin?

Mucho Gracias to Perry and Chris...they really made this trail fun to ride the first time. It's really a good idea to ride this trail with someone who's ridden it before..both for ease of finding things and so you don't puss out on the descents that look worse than they are. I think that anyone could ride these trails. I didn't get on the "yellow" trails, but if they're easier than the "blues", then it's all good. First off, this is not "a trail", but a series of little trails, and they rock. I had more fun goofing around on all of the areas that we found than I've had in a while. There are some very cool drop-ins and some nice singletrac. There are some drop-ins that you just don't want anything to do with too. We saw this guy come plummeting down one drop that is just uuuggglllyyy!!! Man...he didn't even hit until 3/4 of the way down...AND HE PULLED IT OFF!!!! If you live within a couple of hours of Ocala, do yourself a favor and head to Santos...you won't regret it. My only problem was that I didn't have more time to ride. I will definitely be back. Ride hard and May The Force Be With You.

Ocala has the best riding in N.E. FL. And Santos has the best varity in Ocala. I like Reddick better, however it is only a one way, loop. You know around in circles. Santos has variety and lots of choices. The trails are well marked, and at first it is easy to get lost... This trail system connects with a set of trails called the Spider Kingdom, I have not checked it out yet. The riding at Santos is great for a state with no mountains.

These series of trails are some of the best Florida has to offer. If only I lived closer! Trails are color-coded according to skill level: Red=Advanced, Blue=Intermediate, Yellow=Beginner. Even though I am more of an intermediate rider the Red trails were more of what I am used to riding (Hardrock, Reddick). Some of the blue trails were pretty fast & fun. The yellows were totally boring for anyone with any kind of skills. Highly recommend this trail to everyone no matter where you are from or what skill level you are! Live to Ride & Ride to Live!

There is not much to say about these trails that has'nt already been said before. The place is like a huge mtb playground. Very clean and well maintained.Although the red trails are technical and very challenging, most are still fairly easily ridden. The blue trails are fun at spots but flatten out and get pretty boring. If you have any skill whatsoever avoid the yellow trails. Recommend riding on a busy day, the locals are very helpful with directions.

Best thing about this place? You can be at any skill level, and you'll have a GREAT time! I've been going there almost every weekend for about 4-5 months now, and I'm just as excited about getting there as the first time I went. Not only are there LOTS of trails but there is lots of variety in the trails. If you like flat, straight trails through woods, they've got that..... if you like twisting, turning, up/down, across rocks, roots and openings between trees just wide enough for your handle bars, they've got that.... if you like downhills(kind of short) and going off rock cliffs, they've got that. And when you pull up to the parking area for the first time, don't be alarmed by the number of cars... if it's a weekend there will be LOTS! But, since this place has so many miles of trails, you will probably only come across a few other riders. I was there a few weeks ago, late in the day... and there was about 20 cars... I never saw another rider all day! So check out Santos, for sure... you won't be disappointed!

I bent 4 frames here in 2 days. 4 cannondale jeckylls were totally fried. bent crank, bent johnson rod, and fractured splint loop. I usually go through about a jeckyll per week, but 4 in 2 days, wow!!! but it was worth it, on one i caught major air off a double shenobi and my schock just exploded. i had switched out to a noleen mega air (best schock on market) and when I came down on it, it actually rupyured the metal. it had to be like a 50 foot endo off a cliff. i was ok though, and went back to base camp (on my boy's handlebars) and we rigged up the 2nd jeckyll. i skud wanked though at the first quarry, trying to land an epic 1/2 full mercury, and the frame just bent in two places. and both tires blew out, just exploded on impact. intense harcore bonin for sure. will be back with 5 jeckylls to endo epically.

I liked it...I liked it a lot! I have ridden many trails in Florida (Pensacola, Tallahassee, Tampa) and these are the best I have seen yet. Sometimes I felt like I was back at Oak Mountain Alabama with all of the huge rocks around. The cross-country single track is nice, but the rocky-pits are the really unique thing about this trail...not to mention nearly 60 miles of trail.

Comparing this trails to the others in Florida, I give it a *5*. I highly recommend!

I really enjoyed this trail, although I rode it in the middle of thunderstorm. Dirt trails, not sand, and quite fast. Good rolling hills and some wicked drop offs. I rode the red for most of the time and enjoyed the moguals and drop offs immensly. I had to pass on the rocky area due to the rain made the rocks impassable. Check this trail out.

Review:

Since riding in Virginia, Alabama, France, Italy, and Ukraine I was a little disapointed (expectedly) in the trails. The long climbs around here are a joke. That's what I get for moving to Florida. The long flat trails are great for indurance training and site seeing.
I must reiterate the statements about the trails confusing someone who has never been there. The first time I was out there (with no water - never do that again!) I got lost. I still do not know where I went. Most likely I went in circles. I know I had seen some places five times or more. The secound time I went out and almost made it to I-75 and returned in three hours. That time I had water and was the reason I made it back. You must take water or gatorade!!!
Sometime soon they will complete the land bridge over I-75 so that you can ride over to the other side, if you wish all the way to the Gulf coast. But be warned, horses will share the bridge.

Trails are color coded: red, blue and yellow. The red trails in the rock pits were great. Needed concentration and technique to find a good path among the limestone rocks on the trail. Loose your momentum for a second on a climb and that's it. Plenty of twists, drops and switchbacks. Blue and yellow trails provided scenic rides through Central Florida woods. A little sand on some turns, but not so much that it slowed you down on the straight runs. Difficult and easy trails can be combined for a good ride. We rode about 20 miles here and hung around from late morning to afternoon. Parking is in a grass covered shaded area. Water and clean bathrooms at the trailhead. No food or drinks available, but it is right off 441, so its easy to make a run to the convenience store for gatorade. Trails are only used by bikes; no horses, pedestrians or motor bikes. Somewhat crowded on the weekend, but people are friendly and will let you pass if they are going slower or headed in the opposite direction. My only complaint is that there should be some water and facilities on the further parts of the trails. Well worth the four hour drive from North Florida. Ocala is centrally located, so trip can be combined with a visit to your favorite tourist trap or to the east or west coast of Florida.
