People who have been posting that this trail is closed are merely misinformed. Don't go past the HUGE signs that say not to pass them and you'll be okay. There's still plenty of trails to ride out there that aren't closed down. Stay near the stream runs and away from the large Kudzu field and you'll be okay. Nobody is going to arrest you or tell you to leave unless you're on the posted areas. I ride here all the time and so do plenty of other people... don't let the scare tactics stop you. |

There have been people bringing tools, cutting down trees and leaving trash. It's too bad some people can't just enjoy life as it is. |

The bulk of the powerlines are tight single tracks with varying difficulty. Some areas have lots of roots and 1 to 2 ft. dropoffs, while others are nice beginner type treks. If you are into more extreme mountain biking there is a quarry, a 50-60ft deep sinkhole with steep downhills, and some ramps and ladder bridges, etc. You might want to lay off of going to the powerlines for a few weeks/months though, because the gainesville police department has been out ticketing and arresting trespassers. I've heard that this happens every few years... the land owner gets pissed that people are riding on his land and starts calling the cops. |

Recommended Route: From the middle school pking, go due west on the dirt road and under a gate. Trails will appear on both sides of this road until you get to the next gate(1 mile). Some trails are better than others, try them all for at least 7-10 miles of singletrack.

Now- The Quarry. First, it is posted "No Trespassing" now, so be warned. This is your standard Florida unrepaired quarry, so yeah, it's a blast. Trails range from mild to wild, and the wild is on the sick and extreme side. This is an unforgiving quarry at that. One drop is steep, and wide, then narrows to tight singletrack at the bottom with trees on the left and the pond on the right. Get a hair out of control and pick your poison, broken collar bone or dump your beautiful bike in the drink? Tough call. There are plenty of other easier sprint climbs and drops, it offers something for the solid intermediate through the wickid. This gets 4 chilis overall, the quarry is a 5. Park in the middle school after scool hours only, and keep the place clean, it's actually in fairly good condition. Pack it in, pack it out.-T |

Recommended Route: The easiest route is to take 34th Street, North, to NW 16th Avenue, West, and go until you reach the end. You will come to the trail entrance. Please obey the signs and park only where the signs designate and don't park close to the residents. If there is no parking you can go back, east, on 16th to the school and ride to the trail.

Recommended Route: Just got back from riding powerlines for the first time. The directions given in ths review SUCK!!!!!!Best route, from I-75 get off on 26 go west to NW98th. st.take a right, go to traffic light. Trail is at the dead end on your left.Middle School is on your right, please park at school. To get to rock quarry, enter trail, you will go down a large hill and back up another large hill keep going until you reach the dead end. Take a left, you are now riding along the powerlines, take a right at the fence follow trail, staying to the left. There is great fun to be had at the quarry.

Recommended Route: For one of the most exciting singletrack rides at the powerlines, take a right at the grass/sand trail 125 feet past the steel entrance gate. Follow this past the first set of powerline, until you see a curved offshoot trail going the other direction on your left. Turn around and take this through the "tree-tunnel". Tight and fast, this first section ends with a decent jump onto the main trail. Continue across and take the first left (look hard, somewhat hidden). This is slightly more technical, a few root-filled climbs, wooden bridges etc. The trail ends near the entrance.

PLEASE park at the Fort Clark Middle School on NW 23rd Avenue when ever possible to avoid pissing of the people who live along the access road. The area is posted NO PARKING and they WILL have you towed. And as the trails are on private property it is advisable to avoid all motorized vehicles when in the area. Please do not push our luck. These are the best trails in the Gainesville area. |

Recommended Route: The direction TO the trail given above are, obviously, pretty weak. To get good directions and instruction, try Spin Cycle bike shop on 13th Street in Gainesville. The guys there are cool and seem to know the trail pretty well. As far as a route, it's difficult to say; there's no signage or trail markings whatsoever. It's probably best to follow a local who knows the trails.

Exactly how much singletrack there is here is anyone's guess; none of the trails are marked, and, as far as I know, no one has mapped it. I've been told that there is at least 20 miles of it, and, given the amount of land in question, I see little reason to doubt it. The trails I've ridden have been awesome, beautifully wooded, fast, and at time, challenging. The one unique thing about them is, unlike most Florida singletrack, which is pancake flat with an occasional hill or drop, many of these trail have constant climbs or descents. It would be impossible for me to suggest a loop; I doubt if I've found even half of the trails. However, as you ride west down the fire road that leads into the woods, the first trail you'll come across will almost certainly be about a half mile from the entrance gate on your left. (It's directly across from what looks like a telephone or power station) This trail is about two miles long and snakes through a shady pine wood. It starts out fast and flat, but the center features a small stream crossing(!) and some small but steep climbs. It can be a bit muddy and slippery, which adds to the challenge. The trail dumps you back where you started. From here, continue west along the fire road. You'll soon see the hill. It's huge by Florida standard. I mean, it's no Moab -- we're probably talking about 40'-50' of vertical gain -- but it's a nice climb and an even better descent. Once you've bombed down the hill, you'll see a trail to your right. If you take it, there will soon be another trail to your left that features some muddy, rocky conditions and a sustained climb for about half a mile. From here, you'll be back on fire road. There are several lengths of singletrack to ride here, which may or may not link depending on how you ride them. If you find yourself in a large kudzu field, there will be a great trail on the southwest corner. To the right is one long downhill section -- I'm sure I've hit pretty close to 30 mph on it. To the left is a long, twisty section with a nice downhill and a sustained uphill of close to a mile. Be forewarned: the drop-in to this trail, a narrow, rooty chute between large oaks and a ravine, is very tricky -- I've eaten it BAD on this thing. This trail will bring you back to the top of the hill. This is a possible loop, I suppose, but the fun of this place is exploration. I'm sure there are 10 trails I've missed in this area alone. I've heard there are monster drops into an old quarry and numerous other treat. My advice would be to pack food and water, get there early on a day when the weather's nice (which it is almost every day from December to May), and just ride. The fire road alone is a nice day. I should point out, though, that this is private property, and it is gated and fenced. While it's not enforced, riding this probably does constitute trespassing. Again, I've never seen it enforced, but if someone asks you to leave, it'd be a good idea to do so. Also, the area near the enterance gate is a posted no parking zone. I've never been towed, but it could happen. I suspect if you don't act like a total asshole by blasting your stereo and pissing off the neighbors, you're pretty safe. |
