Review:

Tis a shame... another victim of the urban sprawl. I was building some dirt jumps out there but saw a GRU truck and decided to split. It's not worth getting arrested for riding your bike. I thought GRU was the one group that wanted people to ride there and didn't really care that people rode there. After all, I do help support their company with my utility money. But alas... I will ride in Alachua until things cool off around here. Periodically the police decide to harass everyone and waste people's time, so everyone disappears from the trails for a while until it cools off. Until then, I'll find other places to ride where the land is PRESERVED instead of destroyed in favor of lame ass apartment complexes that nobody asked for anyway. Screw you Fletcher, and everyone else like you. Thanks for robbing Gainesville of one of it's most valuable recreational areas. Once again, you are a plague to society.

Review:

I'm not sure exactly who OWNS the land and I think that's one of the problems. Otherwise this could become quite the trail network. I believe GRU owns part of that land (The stuff around the limerock roads and whatnot) and some guy named "Fletcher" who is notorious for being a jack@ss developer owns the parts which are now being turned into an apartment complex. Apparently money is more valuable than trees and great mountain bike trails. Most people simply aren't willing to take a stand on the issue, since they can just ride at other places. But to me this is a great place to ride, and I will continue to ride until the police lock me up.

RIDE HERE!!

People who have been posting that this trail is closed are merely misinformed. Don't go past the HUGE signs that say not to pass them and you'll be okay. There's still plenty of trails to ride out there that aren't closed down. Stay near the stream runs and away from the large Kudzu field and you'll be okay. Nobody is going to arrest you or tell you to leave unless you're on the posted areas. I ride here all the time and so do plenty of other people... don't let the scare tactics stop you.

These were great trails back when I used to ride them. I'd heard lately that people were getting chased off, so I decided to let it cool off for a while before returning. Is there any word as to if things are safe there now? If you ride out there, or know anything about it, please send me an email, or an instant message! My instant messenger name is Jimbob8142. Review:

I think the Powerlines is excellent for a Florida trail. There are anywhere from 20-40 miles of trails back there, and new trails are built from time to time.

The bulk of the powerlines are tight single tracks with varying difficulty. Some areas have lots of roots and 1 to 2 ft. dropoffs, while others are nice beginner type treks. If you are into more extreme mountain biking there is a quarry, a 50-60ft deep sinkhole with steep downhills, and some ramps and ladder bridges, etc.

You might want to lay off of going to the powerlines for a few weeks/months though, because the gainesville police department has been out ticketing and arresting trespassers. I've heard that this happens every few years... the land owner gets pissed that people are riding on his land and starts calling the cops.

Review:

MOUNTAIN BIKING IN FLORIDA? That was my first reaction, but i was pleasantly surprised by the quality and intricacy of the trails at Powerlines. I was really psyched by the TIGHT tree action, the thick roots, and the abundance of oxygen for my lungs. Just enough uphill to give you a short, high-intensity burn. I felt like I was in a maze and i never knew what was coming next, so it was difficult to be too gonzo, but i'd definitely welcome the impact of the Florida sand as opposed to the Colorado granite if i were to have wiped out. Luckily Neil Chavez was an excellent guide, otherwise i'd probably still be pedaling around in there...or perhaps i'd be dead of heat stroke.
I'd recommend this trail to anyone from beginner to expert. If you're too hardcore to have fun on these trails, feel free to stay home. It beats being stuck in a car or a cubicle.

From the middle school pking, go due west on the dirt road and under a gate. Trails will appear on both sides of this road until you get to the next gate(1 mile). Some trails are better than others, try them all for at least 7-10 miles of singletrack.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Reddick-fun course, Hard Rock-if you don't mind trash, Bellview-little of everything.

Review:

First the trails, then the quarry. The trails are tight, fairly fast and fun, consisting mainly of gradual elevation gain with a few dips and whoop dees. A few jumps are tossed in here and there, but I would prefer more. Nothing more technical than a 3 (That's on the standard 1-5 scale for rookies, only a small percentage ride 5) so its a good place for most riders.
Now- The Quarry. First, it is posted "No Trespassing" now, so be warned. This is your standard Florida unrepaired quarry, so yeah, it's a blast. Trails range from mild to wild, and the wild is on the sick and extreme side. This is an unforgiving quarry at that. One drop is steep, and wide, then narrows to tight singletrack at the bottom with trees on the left and the pond on the right. Get a hair out of control and pick your poison, broken collar bone or dump your beautiful bike in the drink? Tough call. There are plenty of other easier sprint climbs and drops, it offers something for the solid intermediate through the wickid. This gets 4 chilis overall, the quarry is a 5.
Park in the middle school after scool hours only, and keep the place clean, it's actually in fairly good condition. Pack it in, pack it out.-T

Review:

There are some really fast double track downhills that are kind of rocky and washed out so be careful. Too much work just to get to the trails with all the uphills and when finally get to the good trails they come out onto the doubletrack and you have to climb back up the hill to ride the other trails which all eventually come back to the same doubletrack. I guess I need to work on my climbing but I thought it was just too much work just to get to the good trails. Some of the trails are kind of tight singletrack with some technical sections and fast downhills. If you live in the area then go ride these trails. Personally, I would rather go Razorback or Hardrock, Perry! Live to Ride and Ride to Live!

AWESOME TRAIL. You could get lost in here for days and enjoy it. The trails are challenging and watch out for dead-man's-curve (there is actually a sign to warn you). It really is not that bad if you are going slow but the preceding curves are downhill and you catch some pretty good speed. There is a limerock quarry that is fun and challenging. There is an uphill portion that is long, rocky, and quite a workout. I recommend this trail to anyone who is an intermediate rider. The perimeter and along the powerlines is good riding for novice riders. The BEST trail in G'ville.

I live about 1/2 mile from the powerlines trail. I didn't know it was there until I found it on the internet 5 months ago. I ride the powerlines 2-3 times per week, so I know it like the back of my hand.

Trails are well maintained, there is something for everyone. There are some fast singletrack which are really a blast at high speed. There is a rock quarry
at the far end which has some extreme slopes that have
only recently been developed. There are a number of
cliffs and sharp drops. If the quarry is not extreme
enough for you then your not human.

For one of the most exciting singletrack rides at the powerlines, take a right at the grass/sand trail 125 feet past the steel entrance gate. Follow this past the first set of powerline, until you see a curved offshoot trail going the other direction on your left. Turn around and take this through the "tree-tunnel". Tight and fast, this first section ends with a decent jump onto the main trail. Continue across and take the first left (look hard, somewhat hidden). This is slightly more technical, a few root-filled climbs, wooden bridges etc. The trail ends near the entrance.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
8th Avenue trails,
20th Avenue trails,
If your on campus, explore the area around the New Engineering Building. Right off the pathway to North-South street there is a nice grass mogul that allows for respectable doses of air.

Review:

Powerlines is definately the place to ride in Gainesville. While 8th Ave, and 20th Ave trails are close to campus, the lack the sheer size and continuity of powerlines. If your skills will allow it, be sure to ride the quarry area. Take the main trail to end, take left, follow to gravel piles. Take the trail to the right around the cow pasture to mini-cliff. From here it gets fairly technical. In addition to the trails listed here, there are several good ones in the North East portion of the trail system.

I normally go from where I park and ride to the quarry which is about half way down the hill from where I park on the left side. A (very overgrown latly) trail leads about 3/4 of a mile back around someones property line to an old quarry. Couple of pretty harry drop in there, some in excess of 25ft at about 70 degrees. All limerock, I DON'T recomend going there after rain, very slick.

As for the other trails in the area, they cant be missed if you just ride along the fire roads and look around.

There is a nice singletrack downhill if you make your first right onto double track, and head straight across the first set of powerlines. You'll come to a big field full of cudzu, and a single track trail running through it. Bear left when the trail forks, and take the winding trail down-hill through a pine forest. It is decent if you ride fast, but look out for erosion ditches that worsen after rain and patches of sugar sand during droughts. The trail ends up on a road. Head right and go up hill, then stay on the road and go down. There is a series of small jumps at the bottom of the road's next hill. Take a right onto single track and follow the trail around fenced fields. At the top, you can enter the fun stuff. There is a quarry, with a number of varying slopes, some of which get pretty technical for GVILLE. Search around, but be very careful. I understand that someone new bought the land, and parts are now posted. I have the ugly feeling that we are going to lose this place, and it is one of the only Gainesville trails that I know that is worth the time. I usually ride there three times a week, but I think I'll let things cool off there for a while. Good luck and happy riding.

Just wanted folks to know that progress is rearing its ugly head at this trail. Apparently, the rumored condo complex has begun construction. The last time I rode, I didn't recognize much of it due to all the felled trees (but it was still very rideable). The bottom line is that if you know somebody in Gainesville who rides, call first before planning a roadtrip. Suffice to say, it would be a drag to travel to a condominium parking lot although you could bunny hop the tire stops in parking places.

It's a great ride for Floridians, but don't come from out of state expecting the big ups and downs mentioned in earlier reviews. It is Florida after all.

A beautiful, hilly, seemingly endless trail system. Located about 20 minutes west of Gainesville and the University of Florida, this huge plot of oak and pine forest has miles of fire road, fast, challenging singletrack and one of the biggest hills I've ever seen in Florida.

Exactly how much singletrack there is here is anyone's guess; none of the trails are marked, and, as far as I know, no one has mapped it. I've been told that there is at least 20 miles of it, and, given the amount of land in question, I see little reason to doubt it.

The trails I've ridden have been awesome, beautifully wooded, fast, and at time, challenging. The one unique thing about them is, unlike most Florida singletrack, which is pancake flat with an occasional hill or drop, many of these trail have constant climbs or descents.

It would be impossible for me to suggest a loop; I doubt if I've found even half of the trails. However, as you ride west down the fire road that leads into the woods, the first trail you'll come across will almost certainly be about a half mile from the entrance gate on your left. (It's directly across from what looks like a telephone or power station)

This trail is about two miles long and snakes through a shady pine wood. It starts out fast and flat, but the center features a small stream crossing(!) and some small but steep climbs. It can be a bit muddy and slippery, which adds to the challenge.

The trail dumps you back where you started. From here, continue west along the fire road. You'll soon see the hill. It's huge by Florida standard. I mean, it's no Moab -- we're probably talking about 40'-50' of vertical gain -- but it's a nice climb and an even better descent.

Once you've bombed down the hill, you'll see a trail to your right. If you take it, there will soon be another trail to your left that features some muddy, rocky conditions and a sustained climb for about half a mile. From here, you'll be back on fire road. There are several lengths of singletrack to ride here, which may or may not link depending on how you ride them.

If you find yourself in a large kudzu field, there will be a great trail on the southwest corner. To the right is one long downhill section -- I'm sure I've hit pretty close to 30 mph on it. To the left is a long, twisty section with a nice downhill and a sustained uphill of close to a mile. Be forewarned: the drop-in to this trail, a narrow, rooty chute between large oaks and a ravine, is very tricky -- I've eaten it BAD on this thing. This trail will bring you back to the top of the hill.

This is a possible loop, I suppose, but the fun of this place is exploration. I'm sure there are 10 trails I've missed in this area alone. I've heard there are monster drops into an old quarry and numerous other treat. My advice would be to pack food and water, get there early on a day when the weather's nice (which it is almost every day from December to May), and just ride. The fire road alone is a nice day.

I should point out, though, that this is private property, and it is gated and fenced. While it's not enforced, riding this probably does constitute trespassing. Again, I've never seen it enforced, but if someone asks you to leave, it'd be a good idea to do so. Also, the area near the enterance gate is a posted no parking zone. I've never been towed, but it could happen. I suspect if you don't act like a total asshole by blasting your stereo and pissing off the neighbors, you're pretty safe.
