  Paynes Prairie State Preserve

Location:

Florida

Nearest Town:

Gainesville/Micanopy

Directions to Trailhead:

441 to Paynes Prairie State Preserve entrance.

Trail Description:

Mostly flat with some gentle rolling hills. Trails vary from dirt roads to fireroads, some lame paved path; thick oak and cypress hammocks to some sandy pine and palmetto grove trails. Good maps, trails are marked pretty well, most trails are shaded. Great for an all-day exploration ride. Not thrilling, but some predictable fun and varied sights. There is a herd of free running wild spanish horses here, and that's pretty cool for Florida. Lots of deer too. Good place for a picnic ride with a date. Some sugar sand and a few bucks to enter the park make this one get three burning burritos.

Trail Length:

<20 miles

Trail Type:

Singletrack & Fire Roads

Some cool trails to explore... but that's about all.. explore.. Not a MTB park... more for the sight see-er.

Review:

good practice for riding in sugar sand... not a fun ride. wildlife is the main attraction. stick to artificial mtbr parks for a good time in NC FL. easy trail for beginners. watch out for horses. bring water. bring a patch kit. bring someone that's never biked before -- like a little kid or a woman. hrmmm... no real chance of being injured.
