Review:

I travel for work and bring my road or mountain bike with me regularly. I didn't expect to find any good riding down in the Miami area, so I was really happy to find Oleta.
It's obvious that a lot of hard work has gone into the trail design and routing, as well as maps and a bike wash! The trails range from dirt roads to fairly technical sections of singletrack, complete with basic "North Shore" elements such as singletrack-width wood bridges to traverse the occasional marsh, step-downs, whoop-de-dos, and most everything is banked and bermed. It's 6.2 miles of trail packed into a very small area, and I've never turned left/right so much in my life. My favorite section of trail was called dragon loop, though most sections had fun elements throughout.
For perspective, I raced Pro XC and DH for Schwinn's Homegrown Team in the late 90s, finishing consistently in the top 30s NORBA Nat'l Pro, Top 3 NORBA Nat'l Semi-Pro, and winning Pro Class consistently in Colorado (lived in Crested Butte/Telluride 10yrs).
Bottom line: One night ride/one day ride, and it was a blast. Bring your bike.

Moving here from Arizona and being a competitive downhiller, I was very doubtful that I would be able to find any good riding or even a bike shop that sells something other than beach cruzers. To my surprise there is an avid mountain biker community and some very good trails. Oleta Park is one. What it lacks for technically it makes up for in fun. When I say "technical" I am coming from riding epic trails like National or Mt. Eldin in Flagstaff (AZ) or even a couple trips I took to Lake Tahoe and rode Mr. Toads and the Flume trail. You have to realize that technical is an adjective. To anyone who says that Oleta is a very technical course would grow as a rider to take a trip to the mountains and see what technical really is.
However, Oleta is very well taken care of. Some of the bridges and drop-offs remind me of (on a smaller scale) Santa Cruz and Marin County. The smell is something you will need to get used to and make sure to chop down your bars so you don't run into trees. The park offers all ability levels
In comparison to Florida I give this trail 4 stars
In comparison to Arizona and California I give this trail 2 stars.

I just reciently moved from Germany, and I have to say these trails do not compare! But hey REALITY CHECK!!! this is S. Flordia, and the highest point in Flordia isn't even 350ft. Anyways, the trails are very technical; roots, rocks, snake-turns, burms and a few small hills. There is not a whole lot of places to carry momententum so it is a real endurance builder, the root and rocks slow you down tremendiously. It was more than what I expected it to be when I first moved here so I am satisfied. Well, if you like riding, go there and ride, have fun!

Just for the record Aventura Hospital and the Paramedica have deemed the new jump in the back Hamburger Hill. A quote from the nice lady E.M.T. that scraped my buddy off the jump, "its not a days work if we dont have to come out here and pull someone out of the woods" It is a fantastic jump and a great spot to sit and watch some action but heed the warnings on the signs and especially the ones that say "ride within your limits" A month later and my freind is just now starting therapy so he can learn to walk again. Such are the rules if you wanna do big tricks you take big hits as well.

This is MY trail.12 minutes from my house. Ahhhhhhhhhh.I have ridden Oleta twice a week since last August 2001, when I got my starter full-suspension bike from Bell's right up the street from the park. When I first began I was new to mtb riding, so I waited till now to have something to say. I've probably logged about 700-900 miles on the various trails there, in both dry/hot and wet/cold conditions. They're all good. There isn't the huge fear factor on these 12-14? miles of roots, rocks, ups and downs, etc, compared to, say, Markham, but there are plenty of challenges, and a great cardio workout is guaranteed, no matter who you are. You can get hurt out there if you exceed your limits, but the beautiful woods, frequent peace and quiet, and demanding short climbs and drops make it all you could want, unless you prefer jumping off the edge of the Grand Canyon or something similar. I use it to trim down, lost 20 pounds so far doing what I love out there. The people are nice, ready to help if you break down, and are doing the same thing I'm doing--getting off on pure physical exercise! A few words of helpful caution and advice--bring LOTS of water and a power bar or two; a spare tube, tire irons, and a pump is smart insurance;take the newbies on the novice trails and fire roads, the kiddies can do the fire roads and around the log cabins;on the real trails keep your eyes forward and turned on at all times or KaBoom, your grounded;if you're riding right you're constantly changing gears; monitor your tire pressure-it's important, to navigate the roots. I weigh 145#, use 40 front, 38 rear on WTB Velociraptors; Sunday morning is the big attendance time; watch your speed thru the roads up front when driving in, and unless you're a painfreak or love softball-sized rhythm-killing rocks for an almost endless 3/4 mile, skip Davies' Trail(the last one), just like it says all over the place in these reviews, or you'll have both a pinched tube and numb you-know-whats.Davies is unlike the rest of the trails, thank God. Otherwise, Oleta is Highly recommended!

Review:

I like this park a lot. The roots and rocks are challenging, technical, and fun, but if you ride Davie's Trail, you'll leave in a bad mood (see: Turtle's review). Skip it and do something else over again if you need the mileage.

The new jumps are fun, but if you don't know how to jump (see: Guppy's review) stay off the lip. It's not vertical, but it's got enough lip to throw you on your head if you don't know how to jump. Be honest with yourself about this and avoid injury. Stay right! (clue - if you are rolling full speed down the hill, clipped in, with your seatpost all the way up . . . chances are that you're in danger) Also ,there is no landing to the big tabletop either, so expect to land like Evel Kneivel; flat bottom!

ps - like someone else said, if you run XC tires, bring a tube and pump. You'll probably need it at least once.

I just rode the park completely(after several technical difficulties in the past)for the first time on 12-3-01 and I had a blast! What a change from Markham Park. Don't get me wrong, I learned how to ride at Markham and it still kicks my ass occasionaly, but it was nice to ride in a different enviroment and trail system. It has plenty of cover and some of the views are awsome. In a matter of 3 hours I ran into 3 racoons sharing the trails. The trails are rooty and technical at parts. First trail, el diablo, gator bank, dragons tail, french connection, twin peaks, gumbo limbo, and volunteer trail were a blast, but the man made hill in the back was f*ckin sweet! It starts with a decent climb and drop onto a right turn berm, up a small hill, and then you drop into a trough and up two sweet ass table tops. If you get enough speed you can get some sweet-ass-sweet air. I just kept climbing and droping into the jumps. Over all it is a kick ass ride. Now for the down sides. Some parts of the trails are'nt marked that well. I found myself going off course a couple times but no big deal. It is a bit too rooty at parts, but I did'nt mind. I do recomend a full suspension bike to ride this park. Also, I can only immagine how bad the skeeters are in the summer, especially in the mangrove swampy sections, so bring plenty of "OFF". Also bring along a couple of spare tubes, I had a blow out on gator bank and had to walk my bike all the way back to the car.(that sucked and ended my day that time) Get out there and ride!

Take I-95 South to 826 east. This is 163rd Street, but it is marked as 826 east. Get off on this exit, or you will miss it. Follow east for several miles through town. You cant miss the park on the right side of the road. Go past the toll collector inside the park, and park in the first lot on the right. You have to ride back north on your bike a bit before you see the trail head on the left side.

Markham park, Sunrise, Florida... Good climbs (jet ski climb) and some advanced sections... Quiet waters... another root infested singletrack... but not as bad as Oleta.

Review:

This is my first ride here... 11-22-01. I have been riding Markham Park three days a week, and I also ride Quiet Waters. I have been to Jonnathan Dickenson State Park once, so I felt I needed to try Oleta, therefore I can say I have been to most all of South Florida. Ok, here it is. I didnt know what to expect, so I showed up and had to ask directions how to get to the trail head. My bike was set up for Markham, (38 psi in the rear tire) so, when I did the first loop, I quickly saw that I needed more air in my tire. If you think Quiet waters is rooty, well... wait till you ride Oleta. Once my tires were squared away, I went back and did the loop from the beginning. I ride a hard tail, and have for years. This is the first time I have ever wished I had a full suspension bike. The trails are twisty, and full of roots and rocks ranging from golfball size to softball size. There was nothing difficult about this ride at all. What makes this park so technical, is the roots and rocks. If you fall, there is NO soft place to land. There are a few trails that have some man made bridges and such. These were fun... I started my computer at zero at the trail head, and rode 11.4 miles. The park was packed, but I rarely saw anyone on the trails... By mile 7, my body was telling me "enough". I would not recommend a beginner on these "intermediate" trails, simply for the fact that they are SOOOOO rooty and rocky. I ride every day of my life, and I can tell you... I didnt enjoy this ride at all. Save for one exception. At about mile 8 or so, I entered a trail near the back of the park. To my suprise, I came upon a huge limerock "mountain". I was hoping to myself that I would get to climb it, and sure enough, the trail took me up the side. This climb was fairly easy, nothing hard about it... but, the view from the top was awesome. It led to a very decent drop, over a little jump, and into a sharp banking turn.. up a little hill then over two smaller jumps... this part of the trail was awesome. For a split second or two, I actually was smiling. Then, it was back to the torture ride of roots and rocks. I am not being critical here... just telling my honest opinion. I have to take my hat off to the people who maintain this trail... it is very well marked, and maintained. It amazed me how much someone can do with so little... Anyway, my one piece of advice... all of the trails are worth riding... save for one. Unless you are into torture, STAY OFF OF DAVIES TRAIL. This trail isnt even fun in the slightest of senses. I made the mistake of going down it, and it is like a mile of hell. Bump after bump, root after root, and ROCKS gallore!!! It kind of looks like someone drove a dumptruck full of softball sized rocks and dumped them purposely all over the singletrack. This, unfortunately is the last trail you ride before the exit... and left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Again, I am not being critical... this park does test your bike handling skills. But, there is nothing here that an average rider cant handle. If you have never been here, you should try it. It is definately an experience...

Well maintained with all kinds of various difficulty levels. Roots, coral rock, and more roots! Trails are covered by tree canopy for adequate shade during summer. The latest trail improvement kicks butt - kinda like a BMX race trail with a fast drop into a burm then over a small mound then head for 2 sweet jumps for some air! I ate it bigtime on the first jump (the lip is literally vertical on the left side) and my foot unclipped and weight shifted sideways! OUCH! Definitely worth making the trip to Oleta.

The trail is tight, twisty, and fun. Nothing real hard here, so feel comfortable bringing rookies. I always bring newbies here for a couple months before I bring them to Markham. Anyway, it's a lot of fun, and please, if you don't know how to jump, be careful going down the new "mountain" and over the jumps! If you are a daredevil and MUST go down fast and try to jump, at least lower your seatpost. Please don't get my jumps bulldozed by hurting yourself!

This park is awesome. They keep improving their trails. They are up to almost 15 miles of trails now and the latest trail is the best. Overall the trails are rooty, twisty and rocky. Good use of the terrain that they have. Very technical. The new trail is on a man made hill that is about 50 feet tall. It has a couple of fast sections, a nice climb, a nice berm and two great table tops that can be jumped or rolled over. It's a blast

A lot has changed. Atleast every old trail has been lengthened and improved. "High Pass" gives us Floridians a chance to build some real speed. There are new trails to speak of also. The "French Connection" has an excellent bridge and a challenging log crossing.

It was a well maintained nice trail. i had a real good time, and i would recommend anyone to ride it. but, it wasnt very technical or very challenging. i had to put my foot down maybe once or twice, and i personnally like trails that are a little less obvious and mapped out.I also like more technical riding or the really fast single track. this falls somewhere in between .yeah there are some rocks and roots, but nothing that will slow you down too much. its fun, though and i loved the weather since i had just ridden a trail up here in the snow and a week later im riding in perfect 75 degree weather.

What a trail, there is an admission fee of 4$ on Sunday, but if you would like to see what all those 4$ admission fee's can do go there. This is a well maintained and well planned 10 mile loop. As you enter the trail you will start off with a couple of quick twisty banked climbs and decents, nicely banked turns with technical root systems. The ground is mostly hardpacked, lots of loose golf ball sized rocks make the trail interestingly menacing as you drop off the hill and speed to your 180 degree banked turn. Front wheel slide out is a huge factor on this trail. If you want to go fast you have to be sharp and good with the brakes. Lots of 180's on this trail, a few will turn you straight into a 15 foot climb with little momentum to help you up. There is my most favorite section which I believe is new. It is a section that starts with steep technical climbs and the big payoff is the four or five 3 foot high banked turns slightly sloping downhill but after you shoot out of the first one your movin fast. High "G" cornering and lots of speed out of the turns. I could do that part all day!!! There are a few bridges all are easily ridden (not like BEHIND K MART)that part I think would be the only thing that I would say could use a little improvement. Lots of climbing, Descending, sharp turns, loose rocks, roots, speed, jumps, bumps, shade, and very Very VERY much worth the drive from Lake Worth.
I rode this trail on Sunday 12-10-2000 the day Miami got 7 1/2 inches in the morning. Pouring down rain the whole morning. This trail does flood quickly. Every little dip in the course will have standing water in it. BUT Ill tell you what I just bought a 2001 Jekyll that has never seen a drop of water yet. I brought it down there and rode the first lap as it was sprinkeling and starting to get some small but avoidable puddles on the trail. Twards the end of the first lap it started to rain really hard. As we sat in the pouring down rain at my truck and rehydrated the question arose "do we get dry or do we go get muddy?" My bike looks great with a thick coat of mud on it let me tell you!!!! We went back in there and just hammered through slippin, slidin, jumpin, and just playin in the rain like a couple of kids. We were totally coated with mud head to toe. Filthy nasty throw those socks away kinda dirty!!!! This trail is way fun it was worth the 2 hours of cleaning and lubing after, WELL WORTH IT. Im going back on a regular basis and gonna love every minute of it.
This is the best trail south of K-Mart which I ride every week and have for years now. It is a nice breath of fresh air. Way better than Cholee, or dyer (dyer sucks). It is just a good as K-Mart different but same diversity and fun. I will drive 130 round trip just to ride 20 anytime.
If you havent ridden this trail you should. It is a great trail and it is well maintained. And if its raining screw it go anyway and have a blast besides there is that nice bike washing station on the way back so she'll still be shiny.

You will hear alot of complaints about this trail being too rooty, and it is.But for south Fl. its better than you would think.True the trail is rooty and rocky, but it is 99% hardpack.Amazing considering its only 250 ft. from the intercoastal. Its about 10 miles in length including the jeep trails.Overall its pretty flat with only a few short steep climbs, but this trail can be very taxing .THE ROOTS beat the crap out of ya.One thing they need to work on there is its tolerance to take rain.TOO many holes that fill up with rain water, almost impossible to ride here during the rainy season.unless you like destroying your bike.A good thing is recently they started covering some of the trail in orange clay, hope they do more of that.Best parts of the trail are dragons back and the new section in the back has the best drops and climbs on the trail.Full suspension best choice for this trail.overall pretty good, just beats you up some due to roots and rocks.

I just moved to FL from Boston and I was surprised to find ANY mtn biking here at all. Oleta is really pretty fun in its own way. Lots winding singletrack, a few short steep climbs etc. Coming from the northeast, it's not exactly what I call challenging but challenges are where you find them. I think it's great that the folks at Oleta have made a decent riding experience for riders of all abilities.
One thing I have to comment on is the ridiculous preponderance of high end full suspension rigs I see out here. Are you guys nuts? Do have any idea what those bikes are really for?

I live in a location that is central to pretty much all of the South Florida trails, Oleta, Markham, Quiet Waters , Kmart etc etc. I have read some of the above reviews and I am wondering if I was riding the same trails. Either that or I just have a different idea of a good trail. A technically challenging course is more my speed as apposed to a good cardio workout. I am an intermediate rider and really did not find these trails challenging whatsoever. They are very nicely maintained and well marked but other than that boring compared to the trails at Markham. The very first trail off to the right from the trail head offers some challenging drops and BMX like ups and downs but other than that, this park was nothing but riding over roots for 8 miles. The entire park I did not have to take my foot out of the pedals. You will have to excuse this next sentence, but this is how I explained Davie's trail to my friend. Keep in mind that I ride a single suspension bike. The Davie's trail seems like an endless switchback over a ton of little coral rocks a small to medium sized roots, there are no ups, or climbs or challenging obstacles to get over, just a bunch of pedaling, if you want this kind of abuse just take a ballpeen hammer to your testicles for a good 15 minutes and you will get the same effect. If you live in the area it is a nice change of pace from the other parks, but if you are traveling your time would be better served at Markham park or some of the trails in West Palm Beach.

Lots of tight twists and turns, some moderately sharp switchbacks(usually at the top of a short, steep climb. Nothing real scary, just lots of intense aerobic fun. Bring lots of water, food, and anything else you might need. In addition to the great riding, there are cabins, pavillons, and a white sandy beach. To top it all off, you can hear and see the Scarabs with their huge V8's cruising down the intercoastal waterway. I was there today, and the ORBA put on a great dual slalom race and Fat Tire Festival. Kudos on a well run event, and many thanks to all the nice Park personnel. I will definitely ride this trail again, and I ride in Ocala twice a month! If you are within a couple of hours from here, defintely check this place out! Okay guys... finally I've done what I wanted to do... put some actual pics of Oleta on my website then judge for yourselves how technical is it. The pics are from the Cactus Cup Race held 14 Nov, 1999.

If any of you can recognize yourselves from the race numbers I'll be happy to make a print for you but some of the pics are digital only. Peace!!!

Pleanty of rocks and roots. The first trail is pretty fun. After that, the next two trails are a little flat but very technical. Its easy to get lost if you have never been there.Look out for Davie's Trail,a 1/2 mile trail made up of roots and coral rock that kills your tires. All in all, great trails!

Many great trails pretty technical not much up and stuff but you will have fun and get a great workout and you will usually always find somebody there to ride with. The trails are well maintained and the park has an entrance fee of 2 dollars (national park).

As a former road racer, Oleta was the first trail I rode, only last Thanksgiving. So, I haven't even been riding a mtn bike a year yet but was immediately hooked. Oleta is great but don't go if you're not totally awake and focused. Like everyone is saying lots of trees, roots, and rocks, not to mention very few places where one can ride in a straight line longer than a few seconds. Actually I wanted to put a picture up with this review as I went on my last ride with my digital camera. Oh well, maybe they'll upgrade the site soon for the inculsion of a small image. Seeing is worth a whole page of text!

Mostly singletrack (don't know the exact mileage) with some fire roads in between trails. The trails are moderately technical and can turn to difficult when wet due to the large amount of roots that you will encounter. Terrain is rather flat with some short and steep climbs and drops. Also, lots of sharp and quick turns to keep you busy. The trails are well maintained.

I moved up to nyc 1.5 years ago.. And appreciate what you have down there... I have tried the trails here ct., ny, and nj. but oleta is mile for mile the best at being consistantly challenging. You don't have long climbs or descents but the more advanced trails make you think constantly. I rode those trails for a few years and miss them terribly...

Well...if your just a street rider...ITS NOT EASY, but anything fun and worthwile isn't easy for that matter.
I recently got a really good FSR with excellent shocks and it made the ride better but there are some narrow/sharp turns...lots of tree roots and rocks, which don't bother me as much anymore with the new bike, and plenty of up and downs. If you are a chicken like me, don't worry about it...but you might not want to clip in...And if it rains, you better make sure you aren't using semi slick...GO WITH KNOBS...but the trail is AWESOME...what an adreneline rush. I can see why people are so hooked. Its like playing a human video game. Be careful...but more importantly...HAVE FUN!!

This is the place where I learned about mountain biking . Since about 1 year ago all I have done in my spare time is come to this place, I even sold my boat.
Great technical trail system, probably the most technical in the state even though some people might disagree with me. not great elevation but some nice steep little uphills and downhills. these trails are very well maintained and are very well marked. There is probably about 10 to 13 miles to ride in this park, also bring lots of fluids in the summer. OHH I almost forgot, once you pass the main entrance do not go over 15 MPH. There is a Ranger waiting just for you to hit 16 mph around the curve. This guy would not give you a break, even though he is a very nice guy whenever he is not giving speeding tickets. Check out the cabins inside the trails. The Park rents them for an affordable price per night.

I have been riding this trail since April and I'm still amazed at how challenging it still is to me. Let me put this trail review in perspective. I am an intermediate rider at best so bare with me. This trail is unreal. It is like riding big surf. You need total concentration while zipping up and down steep climbs and steeper drops. Off of the steep drops the trail becomes a carving roller coaster ride. Whoever designs this trail really knows what he or she is doing. This trail can be ridden any time of the year. Summer is no problem becuse you are in the shade 90% of the time. Now this ain't the trail for expert downhillers. I just don't think you can get that type of speed on such a technical trail. But the beauty of this trail is the set up. It is a smooth transition fm trail to trail off of the fire roads. It is such a rush. Go to this trail!! people are freindly and Hauleover Inlet is down the road a piece. If u have ur surfboard u can go surfing after ur rollercoaster ride at Oleta......

I only rode this trail once while competing in the Hi-Tec Adventure race but was really impressed! A well laid out system with enough challenges to keep you on your toes. The 12 hours before the race saw about 3inches of rain and made it even harder. If I ever get back down there I will definately be riding this trail again!

Forget what the guy below had to say about the trail...

This is probably the best trail in Dade/Broward area.

For the most part, Oleta is a series of tight, technical trails loaded with roots and rocks (keep those tires pumped up!). There is very little in the way of elevation change which is par for the course for S. FL but there are some steep little technical climbs that will challenge you.

Thanks to a great volunteer effort there, the trails have now grown to approximately 8.5 miles of mostly (85%) singletrack with more trail on the way.

I give it 5 stars on the S. FL scale (I would have to give it a 4 if I had to compare it to Ocala's Hardrock)

Review:

The best all-around mountain biking site in South Florida. And, although some may disagree, I also believe it's the most technically demanding trail in the state.

Oleta offers at least eight miles of beautifully maintained and marked singletrack and fire road. If you add an infrequently ridden section on the east side of the park, which wraps around the southern tip back to the parking lot, it's probably closer to 10 or 11 (I've been told as many as 15) miles--that's one hell of a loop.

If you've never been, be ready -- Oleta is a demanding ride. Its roots, rock, drops, climbs and switchbacks rarely let up. Basically, you keep on your toes or land on your ass. In particular, the hilly finish of High Pass is a punisher, and Dave's Trail, a seemingly endless death march of slick roots, jagged babyheads, and nasty-tight switchbacks, will give any rider a run for his money.

Rain is not your friend here. Many of the trail become very slick after a good shower. Especially hairy is a precarious mound of dirt near the trail's southwest corner. This thing gets ice-slick when wet and should probably be avoided, or at least walked, by beginners.

It's demanding ride, but it's also a scenic one that anyone can enjoy. Most of the trails are shaded by Australian pine and mangrove, and many wind around the silent black water of the Oleta River. It's very green and quiet, a nice escape.

Admission is $3, but you can use a state park pass. The trails are virtually empty on weekdays. On weekends, there may be 25-50 bikers on the trails at once, but because of the length of the system, you'll rarely pass or be passed on a trail.

You'll pay some dues here, no question. But there is no better place in South Florida to mountain bike than Oleta.

This place is the best all-around trail in South Florida. The trail is well maintained with great markings and easy to follow. It runs along the intercostal waterway and canals with a consistant breeze coming off the ocean a 1/2 mile away. There are no climbs to speak of but it is loaded with tight tight singletrack with lots of imbedded coral rocks and roots and some technical stuff that sneaks up on you. Nice long fire roads connect the different trail areas and are a great place to rip or relax depending on what shape you are in. The drainage is excellent and is rideable 365 days a year. Bike wash area just added recently, ample parking.
