Red Bug, Tom Brown- take a trip to Austin TX for serious riding. Nothing in Tallahassee really compares.

Review:

Rode it once, never again. I was bored and feared an attack from wild indians as I pedeled through the woods on a ride that seemed like it was never going to end. Finishing the track I raised my arms in the air like Lance Armstrong after winning his 4th straight Tour, I was happy it was over.

I rode this trail once a few years back. It was a nice, long trail with smooth curves and mild climbs. Overall, it was fun and fast. The sink holes are cool too. The sand, in places, tested my strength and handling skills. A nice change from the rooty Tom Brown/Red Bug.

Great trail for beginner's like me! I usually ride 2 times a month. It is a fast trail so it's fun. It isn't too challenging so you forget you are even "working" until your done. Not too much sugar sand or roots, just really big trees!

Two unmarked trails lead west off the car parking lot at the St. Marks Trailhead, a few feet south of a utility pole...take the right path (you'd have to look hard to even see the left one). About a mile in, you'll come to a north-south forest cross road -- best route is continue straight and bear right onto unmarked single track (the Cup Trail or Dead Dog Trail). At about 2.2 miles in from parking lot you arrive at first leg of blue-marked Munson Hills Trail -- turn right and you'll be at the first Powerline crossing in a minute or so.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Fisher Creek trails. Fern Trail. Cadillac Trail. Tom Brown Park Trail. Live Oak and Computer Tutors connector trails. Trails behind Westwood Publix (don't go there.)

Review:

Like others said, these are sandy, winding trails through pine forests. Best after a rain. FAST; a good place to zone out on speed, lines and momentum. The total length of marked trail is about 10-11 miles including Tall Pine Shortcut.....But the total of marked and unmarked singletrack is a little more than 34 miles, including the old 8 mile moto trail that crosses the marked Munson trail several times, three long trench-trail loops toward Munson Slough (the "Y3" loop and two others), technical trails along the slough east bank, 12+ miles of little known single track south of the gas line, and various connectors, small loops, and sidetrails to nowhere. A connector from the Y3 Trench leads eventually to a long southern moto trail that originates at an odd hilltop sinkhole south of the gasline; takes some exploration to piece it all together; one long leg passes behind the Woodville ballfields; another leg dead-ends near the Woodville Hunt Club and 24/7 Rifle Range. From the St. Marks Trailhead parking lot, there's a way to route an immense 15 mile singletrack cloverleaf that never repeats itself and never joins any marked trails, returning to parking lot by a small trail that passes behind the bike shop. Two years ago in August some out of town moto guys built major jumps and moguls along two trench-loops southwest of the farthest reaches of the marked Munson trail; compacted by subsequent rains. Takes some exploration to search out all the unmarked singletrack; no maps. If you venture off marked trails in August, September and October be prepared for forty full-face spiders; big argiopid orb weavers that change color when they hit the ground, to look like pebbles. These are great trails to ride at night in winter, once you learn your way around. As another reviewer said, you won't see many other riders....but in winter you may pedal into major National Guard War Games, foxholes and all, down towards Munson Slough.

I'm not sure what the other reviewers are complaining about - the deep sand only totals a couple of hundred yards of trail out of seven miles! The remainder is either hard-packed or covered with a generous layer of pine needles. If you like tight, technical trails - this is not for you. If you enjoy opening it up and flying through the woods, dodging pine trees and jumping roots - this is an awesome ride. You could easily average 15 mph over the entire trail if you push it.

Warning: There have been some car break-ins at the St. Marks trailhead, where many people park to get to Munson Hills Trail. They seem to occur duing the week when the trailhead is less crowded. They also target newer, expensive cars, take your old pick-up, not your Mercedes. Or ride to the trail from FSU campus or in town. There is a paved bike trail that starts on Gambler Street off Lake Bradford Rd. that connects to the St. Marks trail.

Good beginner off road loop. Easy ride. Be sure and ride after rain and never in the peak summer season at high noon. Take beginners before the sun starts blasting the sand. Take plenty of water and bug spray. Good break from paved path.

Munson hills is a great trial if you like to haul buty! The trail is quite sandy and can only be riden the day of or the day after a hard rain. If you do not catch it under the right conditions it will not be very fun for the weak or underskilled. The sand stinks at first but easy to get used to. The only thing technical is learning how to take big fast turs in the sand without flying into a tree. One more treat at Munson Hills are the Fox squrills, I see one every time I go out there, they are beutiful and are as big as cats. Enjoy Munson Hills the next time there is a big rain, seeing as it is in Florida you only have wait a couple days. Happy riding!!!!

Review:

This is a good trail for the beginning rider. It's flat and not technical. There's two choices for distance... you can do the short loop which takes a shortcut off the main loop and is only about 4 miles long or you can do the regular loop which is roughly about 8 miles.

The even better option out here is to ride on all the other trails that are not a part of the official Munson Hills loop. There are miles and miles of singletrack all through the woods. Be sure to go with someone who knows the route. It's easy to get lost out there. The best thing about these trails is that they're not as well used so they don't get as sandy as the Munson Hills loop. They're packed better and covers with leaves and pine needles.

I used to live about 10 minutes from here and I used to ride there at least once a week. It was easy to get 30 miles in out there.

Tom Brown Park all the way!!! Fern Trail rocks too!

Review:

It asks for a detailed review, but there isn't much to say about sugar sand and roots all over the place. It took me about 2 minutes to get sick of this trail, considering when I rode it, it was the dead of summer. Due to the heat, all moisture was gone from the ground and I just sunk into the sand. Horrible if you ask me. The ride on St. Marks Trail is 100 times better than this, and it's paved!!!

trial is great if you want to be all alone in the woods. outher than that it sucks. the "single track" is nothing but a trail of loose sand. if your idea of fun is pedalling through 4in of dry sand for miles then go for it. if not then take the fern trail to tom brown park.
