this is a very nice trail, well maintained, varied with some sandy areas but what can you expect. there are no hills which makes this the only bike track in the entire universe without a climb. oh, there is a small climb up a dike (not dyke) but manmade stuff doesn't count. if you're a newbie you need a map cause otherwise you'll get lost. start anywhere, ride it all and you'll travel through sandy open spaces, hard wood stands, palmetto groves and reclaimed swamp. there are some lakes, creeks and the river to see but otherwise all of your attention is on the single track. the place is never very crowded, the most people you'll see is after work and early sat. and sun. mornings. heavy rains can limit riding area due to flooding but at the same time the best conditions are a day or two after some rain which helps harden the sand. night riding here is also lots of fun but since it closes at sunset you have to park down the road at the hotel complex or face the possibility of having your vehicle towed.

Seeing as its the only place to ride in the immediate area, it does it's job. Great for developing your leg speed, as the only way to get a workout is to spin the entire time. Keeps me in shape for trips to other states. Good spot for pollishing your skills for real trails. Shoot, I forgot, this is Florida, there are no REAL trails.

What's the deal with this trail? Its bad enough it has no elevation or obstacles but why must they constantly close trails when it rains? You can't get a good ride in when they narrow the trails down to only ONE choice.

This is a pretty pansy trail. I passed a Purple Dinosaur and some TeleTubbies on Next bikes last time I was there. If there is a chance of mud, they raise the terror alert level to red and shut it down for MONTHS! God forbid a tree branch falls in the trail! Come on man, Grand-ma can swim! Three inches of water won't kill anyone on a bike. If I wanted a puss ride, I'd be on the sidewalk. . dirt don't hurt.

This trail could be much much more

I started at Morris Bridge and we went through Fletcher and another park. Not sure about the route we took.

The only other trail I rode in Fl was Santos close to Belleview. See that review. If anyone is traveling to Ga from Fl and wants to ride in the Atlanta area or N. GA, e-mail me and I would be happy to show you around.

Review:

First of all I'm used to riding in North Ga and going up hills. There are no hills on this trail. That was good because I'm not a big fan of going up hills. I met a guy named Scott in the parking lot and followed him on his set 15 mile loop. Good thing, because I had no idea where I was going. We started out with about a 15mph avg pace and were winding through trees and florida type bushes on single track and double track. 15mph avg is a little more than I was used to because we have a lot of climbing here in GA. The trail was great though if you just want to go out and hammer! The sand was hard packed in most areas but still loose in a few spots. The roots were nothing compared to N. GA. Most were small and easy to avoid if you wanted to.

We looked for gators in a few places off the main trail but nothing. We did see two armadillo's and 5 wild boar and a wild pig (pink) that were hanging out together.

Some places the trails were really twisty and about 8 miles in we hooked up with another rider named Greg. Our avg speed lowered to about 11mph. Riding on the sand created a lot more rolling resistance on the tires than riding on hardpacked clay here in GA. Therefore, our 15 mile ride would have been a lot like a 20 mile ride on flat surface here in Ga. I got a little burn so it was great.

Basically, anyone can ride these trails because they are flat. I can see how it would be easy to get lost if you are not with someone that knows the trails.

I-75 to Fletcher East – take first left off Fletcher into Park. Drive to end of road and park car – there is a ‘bike shower’ and restrooms there.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Toe, Carter, Alafia

Review:

Some have asked how you connect all three parks (Trout Creek, Morris Bridge, Flatwoods)?
Trout Creek: I always park here because of the shower. Leave the parking lot of Trout Creek and head back down the road a couple hundred feet on left is a wooden fence entry to Trout Creek trails. Trails wind around two lakes then follow trail down power lines to Coconut Grove which will test your balance. End back on the paved road just before the bridge at park entrance. Cross the bridge and (carefully) cross Fletcher to Morris Bridge Park.
Morris Bridge:
Cross next parking area through wooden fences – enter onto main trail which is a gradual downhill. At the bottom is a kiosk map. Go right and follow along sandy ditch to “Gator Bait” which is a rooty, bouncy trail. Follow Gator to the end where it makes sharp left (sometimes there are tangerines on the trees). The trail now heads back towards Main trail – follow till you see a trail to the right named “Indian”. This is another fast rooty trail with much less SAND than Main trail. Follow Indian all the way to the power lines. If you go right it dead-ends at a swamp, go left. Take the first faint trail to the right – a very rooty trail that heads through a cypress swamp (don’t fall or suffer being stabbed by cypress roots –trust me, its cool). Follow this trail till it opens up and joins main trail, all heading to a single trail that connects Morris Bridge and Flatwoods. The joining trail will end at another parking area and boat dock – take wooden walkway UNDER Fletcher road to the restrooms/boat launch and rest.
After resting ride up to Fletcher road and ride OVER the river bridge (the only way to cross the river). Immediately after crossing the river step over the guardrail on the left side of the road and ride down the trail to river’s edge. Take either trail to the right into the woods and end up on a long straight away the runs parallel to Fletcher. Take the first trail to left “Expressway” and wind through the woods to Flatwoods Park. You’ll pop out behind a picnic shelter in sight of the paved loop entrance.
Flatwoods:
Main trail surrounded by 7 mile paved loop for roadies, skaters and walker/joggers with ice water coolers. Picture the park as a clock face, paved entrance at 6 o’clock. Start on paved road to mtn bike trail entrance at marker #25. (About 5 o’clock). This trail will endlessly snake through the main part Flatwoods. I think its broken into five sections by fire roads. Palmetto, pine and scrub, lots of roots and sand with switchbacks. Personally I don’t like the ride but it adds miles. You will end up around the 10 o’clock position of the clock face. Turn left and cross over pavement to continue trail (or ride on pavement) At about 9 o’clock point on the right side of paved circle is a trail leading straight out. This sandy trail is about 1 mile long. Halfway down is ‘Panther’ witch circles an open marsh and rejoins paved loop at 12 o’clock position. If you go straight instead of taking Panther, you will crosses an aluminum bridge and head right up to the flood control levees – ride up onto the levee and follow the dirt road to the left – it crosses through gates and flood control dam over the river again and then ends up at the Trout Creek parking lot where you started. Shower off your bike and self and drive home happy.

Total loop is about 16 miles.
For a good cardio ride I give this park a 4. For technical roots and switchbacks I give it a 2. There are no drops to speak of. Very scenic tour of Florida – great for families.

I can't believe some of the reviews this trail gets. Some people calling it Extreme, and Hardcore?!! This must be the first time most of them have been off the pavement. For anyone that realy enjoys a good challenging ride....this aint it. If you coming from pinellas county, take a little bit longer and go to alafia. If your really new to the sport, then try this place out. It's not that it's a bad place to ride, it's just Boring, no drops or climbs, the "technical" sections that everyone refers to are nothing more than a few rooty trails. So for all the people that Ride often, and might be coming to this area, skip this one, head to alafia, or even Carter road park if you don't mind a little extra Drive. If you live in Pinellas county and just need to ride in some dirt, it could be worth your time. All in All the most frightnening thing you'll run into hear is not the terrain, but maybe a big ass wild boar.

Stick to the right side of the track go through the little sand dunes (sloppy) and get to the dark single track. There is some really nice shade and tree obstacles (roots, hanging limbs, logs). Watch for bus sized palmetto bugs and spiders. Bring the bug spray and a pack of water.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Santos by far the best and really only challenging ride in Florida. Flatwoods. Orlando has some similar trails at Snow hill they are nice as well.

Compared to other Florida trails this is a 4 however, with the world this is 1 easily, I will be nice and give it a ....2

Review:

Sorry folks this is no Slickrock MOAB and if you have riden anywhere outside of Florida you know this is not an intermediate run. However, this is the typical Florida trail besides Santos. You will find this to be the basic terrain and climbing down here. It can still be a good time but definitely no THRILL of the downhill but what do you expect?

I also recommend that you do not use Full Suspension (anywhere in Florida) unless you have lockout on it, because you will become a sinking ship in the sand and you will bounce haphazardly thorugh the roots, FULL is for downhill and for people with bad backs who ride the paved stuff :).

If you are an experienced rider the only way to have fun on this thing is to point your bike at the trail and and start flying as fast as you can hop on every trail and get lost then find your way back at the same speed - No brakes are really necessary on this trail at all.

Great trail, you can stay well hidden in shady areas and also get out into some open areas, there is a big rope hanging from a tree where (if you dare) you can swing off and go for a swim in the hole....be careful. At the north end you can head out, throw your bike over the fence and head south, you'll find a convienant store where they sell COLD beer.

I ride this trail every year during an annual trip to St. Pete. I enjoy these trails a lot and although there are no real climbs, the trail design and surrounding environment make up for it. The rooty sections are challenging, and the trails overall are a lot of fun. A better bridge across the creek would be suggested (if not already done) but other than that no complaints.

I ususally ride the trail every other week since I found out about it 2 months ago. It's a blast and the closest place to ride off-road, (the only thing Pinellas County has to offer is the Pinellas Trail, and while it is nice, it isn't off-road). The tree roots offer some challenges which make for a fun ride as well as the tight switchbacks. It is also nice to ride over to the Flatwoods loop and ride it for a while and then jump back on the dirt. It is about a 35 mile drive from my house, but I leave with a smile every time!!!

Gee, it was free and I was worried cuz the parking lot was full the Saturday I went. I drove almost 100 miles and didn't want to ride with crowds of beginners, so I was bummed. Lo and behold, once I got on my bike I only passed a few folks all day. I guess there's plenty enough different trails here for everyone. When are they gonna take that fence down from around the sinkhole? looks like nice blue water for a swim. Anyways, great maps at the Flatwoods site, otherwise I had to memorize the kiosks and the "you are here" signs. Pretty cool (shady) rides. . .some decent rough stuff with lots of roots if you like. . .some flat switchyback stuff too. I'll be back and camp out maybe. If you go check these parks out, take the whole day so you can do the whole loop and ALL of the side trails. Something for everyone here except pros and DH. No real climbs either but good fun FOC.

Review:

Really this is three (or six, depending if you count the "boat ramp" parks also) very different parks recently connected by a well marked main trail loop. Lots of diversity here, and not much sugar sand. (as some have complained about in FL trails.) Mostly all single-track, there's flat, fast sections (try the Flatwoods internal trail), and awful (=awesome!) rooty drops & switchbacks to challenge you as you like. And that's really the heart of the Morris Bridge System. . .it's exactly what you make of it. there's no big drops, climbs, or DH, but great tech workouts. A newbie can enjoy most of the trails if he/she takes it slow; and a pro can be taken to the mat easy without pushing real hard. Some of the tougher trails here (Misery, Gator Bait) are slow go or you eat a cypress knee. Try racing Coconut Trail on the Trout Creek section if your knees love riding over a landlocked logjam of palmetto trunks. It can be a real blast, but eat your wheaties if you plan on doing the full loop at a good pace. ice cold water stations and restrooms available at the Flatwoods park. Get there at sunrise and count how many deer you see. We counted ten last ride. Mostly hard-pack and roots. The only sugar sand is in sporadic places, and only for maybe a few feet or yards at a time. The WTA does a fantastic job of maintaining these trails, and has put down wood chips on most of the sand, and restored traction to some of the sandier sections. Most of these trails are fully shaded. Helmets are required on all of the trails. On the weekends, Park Rangers monitor ch.1 of those personal 2-way radios, so bring 'em if you got 'em. Like I said, these trails can be as great as you are a rider, so get out there and ride 'em yourself, you won't regret it.

i am an excellent rider who has ridden at the professional level but due to some weight gain have not regained my form. but these trails are some of the most tecnical and "hardcore" as i have ever ridden in my 15 year career. Perhaps, only satans pass in pebo, montana can compare. Not very hilly or anything, but massive switchbacks, giant roots, huge mud holes, and even a few shenobis. i have not been able to complete a strenuous 3 to 4 mile ride without being bucked from my saddle. this place was built by the devil himself. would only reccomend the grandpa and indian and palmetto trails to seasoned pros like myself. this is as extreme as it gets folks and is NOT for the faint of heart. I've only ridden to the point where you have to cross the road, starting at the first parking lot after getting off the highway. Somebody put woodchipssdown on parts of the main trail which was a huge help, reminded me of Kentucky trails. If your looking for a good endurance trail and don't mind sand check this trail out. I've been to Morris bridge a number of times and explored all the trails. Rather than do the out and back, loop around the main trails and side trails, I opted to run the entire length of single track in the combined Morris Bridge-Flatwoods-Trout Creek area. Good printable maps can be found at: http://home1.gte.net/hoak/wta/frame.htm

With map in my pocket I completed 18 miles of singletrack. Some parts were more challenging than others - no elevation changes to speak of but lots of twisty turns, gatorbacks, and low hanging branches. There is one section in Trout Creek which is near impossible for all but the most proficient and talented riders (I ain't there yet). The trail length takes you along sinkholes, lakes, and swamps and although the parking lot was chock-a-block on a Saturday morning, I hardly saw anyone else on the trails. Fun morning... I'll do it again.

I have ridden Morris Bridge for several years now. I primarily go there after work. Not much else within driving range for an evening ride. I do a 22 mile loop including Morris Bridge, the 1800s trails and Trout Creek. Most the best parts of Morris Bridge etc have been removed over the years by the group that maintains the trails, including the best root section in Trout Creek which was removed a couple weeks ago.
If you are a really good rider, you'll probably find Morris Bridge boring, unless you can memorize the trails well enough to get a good loop going and manage to include the following trails in their ride: Indian, Gator Bait, Misery, Trout Creek. Other riders will enjoy themselves following the main trail to Morris Bridge Park.

Typically, side trails are the most challenging offered at Morris Bridge.

Review:

Nice trails, much nicer now that they are mapped and marked! Most of the trails wind thru the woods but there are a couple that have some nice rooty sections to keep you interested. Some center trails have a bad sugar sand problem but the outer trails are great! On the north side of Fletcher there is some newer trail, just ride down the road and look for markers. If you start at the Morris Bidge trailhead you can end up at a park at the Hillsborough river. Cross the bridge and drop back in the woods to get on the "Old 1800" trail in Flatwoods park. Lots of trails off of this. These trails get really crowded on the WE so plan accordingly. Have fun!

I like any of the outermost trails away from the road, then taking the Flatwoods trail to Trout Creek.

Nice tight singletrack on several trails. The sand on some trails is a downer but these trails can be avoided.

Review:

If it's going to be your first time, go with someone who knows a little about the place or get a map. You can ride 25 miles without backtracking on all singletrack if you know the place. Great technical rooty trails and fast tight singletrack too. Lots of trails, most of which are well groomed and ridden. Show up on Sat or Sun and ride with someone else.
