  Live Oak connector

Location:

Florida

Tallahassee

Directions to Trailhead:

Trail is directly off of Live Oak Plantation Rd., LOP Rd. runs between Meridian Rd.&Thomasville Rd.(Hwy 319N) From Meridian Rd. go approx. 1-1.25mi., the trail starts on the left side of the road in a wooded section,in-between houses,.25 mi. before Timberlane School Rd.

Trail Description:

This a great way to start a day of riding in Tallahassee. Since this trail is not an official city trail there is no parking area. If ur coming from out of town I reccomend parking @ Joe' Bike Shop on Lake Ellah, it,s close to town and I-10(S. on the Hwy. 27 exit), with good food right up the road( Hopkin's Eatery and International House of Food-best fallafell and gyros west of Egypt)and fair prices on tubes(tell em' King Snake sent ya),Chris can tell you the neighborhood way to Live Oak, otherwise head around the lake to Meridian Rd., go left, you have about 3mi. of pavement to get a warm-up on, Live Oak Plantation Rd. will be on the right. Rolling, fast and technical the Live Oak Tr. is a"heads-up" ride. There is a split in the trail at a log hop, take a right and u skip a short and sweet connector loop, that includes a rare(for the hills of N. Tally) stream crossing. The trail will eventually dump out on Timberlane School Rd. If you wish to hook up the out and back to Lake Overstreet/Red Bug area look up the Timberlane-McClay connector On the trail index.

1.5mi. one way

The entrance off of Liveoak Plantation road is on the left if you are coming from Meridian road. Look for a speed limit sign on the right and the trail is almost directly across the street in a wooded section. Taking the trail to the left at the split sends you over some big logs / piles and down a really steep hill to a stream crossing. The Connector trail ends at the I-10 overpass on Timberlane School Road. From there, go left towards Timberlane Road. At the stop sign, go right. There is a cut through trail next to an Office building beside the powerlines. If you miss the side trail, you can ride down the powerlines, but will have to cross a really bushy section and stream. If you follow the powerlines, and keep going left you'll end up at Maclay Road. Just down the hill at Maclay you can pick up the Lake Overstreet Trails and cross Meridian to Redbug.

This was a fun ride! I'm definately going to try it again...the hill just above the stream on the connector was pretty steep. Next time maybe I'll pull it off without shedding blood.

From Forrest Meadows on Meridian. Ravine trail to the Mclay connector, then Overstreet to the MClay trail head. Out on to Mclay rd (turn left) for about a 100 yds to the powerline. Follow the powerline to Timberlane rd. Go right on Timberlane to Timberlane School RD then left on it. The entrance to the trail is up a red clay hill at the pipeline right of way just after passing under I-10. This is les than 1/2 mile total on pavement.

Now that I've been on this trail several times, I can at least find the bridge. It does in fact exist.

I parked along side Timberlane School Road & went in there. The Live Oak Plantation entrance is hard to find the first time around.

This is a beautful pice of property, It's too bad the trail is so short (1.5 miles) However out & back is about as long as a Redbug loop. Someone mentioned a bridge over the creek. The only "bridge" I saw was a rotting log. I also found several obstacles over my meager skills, but then, Hell, I'm old. I can ride Redbug fast & flawlessly but I could not climb the hill out of the creek or even get across the damn thing at either crossing. Novice riders will find themselves doing a good bit of dismounting. It does take some advanced skills.

it's a semi-fun and very short ride. i live a few blocks from it, so it's convenient for me. If you come from out of town, don't come for this trail.

You can connect this trail with red bug, Lake Overstreet and Elinor Phipps-Klapp park trails for a 20+mile ride which requires less than a mile of road riding.

Review:

Head down tight, fast, root infested singletrack for about a third of a mile into the first gully. At the bottom you'll find a small wooden bridge which requires a tight left upon exit onto a steep, tight rooty technical climb(remember this is Florida, the climbs may be steep but never long). Once you reach the top you'll ride thru more rooty single track until you drop down a steep, sketchy, root infested (slick when wet)trail into a creek. Climb out of the creek thru more singletrack up toward the interstate (I-10) and onto Timerlane School Road.

The trail is not long but it is 100% singletrack and a blast. The land where the trail is found was recently bought by the city so its future status is unknown. SO WRITE THE CITY COMISSIONERS MAYOR MADDUX (he is probably running for Governor so he is likely very receptive to his constituents needs and wishes) and respectfully request (remember this is the South)that that the trail remain open and volunteer to maintain it.

Review:

Start from the Live Oak Plantation entrance and plummet down root infested singletrack for about 1/2 mile to the bottom of the first gully. Its tight, full of roots and fast. At the bottom of the first gully you'll cross a small rickety bridge which requires an immediate and tight left into a very rooty uphill (rememer this is Florida, the uphills aren't long but in Tallahassee they can be steep). You climb a bit and then eventually plummet into another gully which ends with a steep and sketchy drop into a creek. When you climb out of the creek you climb out of the gully up toward I-10 and out onto Timberlane School Road. The trail isn't too long but it is a damn good ride. Do it in reverse, its just as fun but a bit harder. You can connect this trail with minimal road travel with the Lake Overstreet trails, Red Bug, and the Elinor Klapp-Phipps park trails. Get a pretty good ride totalling about 20 miles depending on your route.
