Fern Trail

  Fern Trail

Location:

Florida

Nearest Town:

Tallahassee

Directions to Trailhead:

Near Governors Square Mall. The trail starts in a hole in the fence some 50' from Governors Sq. Blvd, behind the Winn Dixie Center on the corners of Park Ave, Magnolia Dr and Governors Sq. Blvd.

Trail Description:

3.3 miles of urban single track connecting downtown Tallahassee to Tom Brown Park on the East, which is a mtn bike destination itself. This is a green transit trunk trail with many feeder trails. The trail traverses some beautiful remaining in-town forests as it winds its way along RR corridors, future city parks, future K-mart sites, drainage easements and other public and private properties. Hilly terrain on the western half. It crosses several busy roads and goes underneath Capital Circle via the RR tracks. This is well used commute and neighborhood route but is a worthy destination for cyclists seeking single track too. An unofficial trail which was built at night by elves and trolls, the Fern is definitely a unique urban riding experience!

Trail Length:

3.3 miles

Trail Type:

Singletrack

Skill Level:

Intermediate

Love the trail when it was at windixie, sense that is now gone you can start at Albertsons. Same drill there is a hole in the fence, use it. Still a very good ride :)

The neighborhood entrance (back behind Coastal Property Service) that I had been taking for quite a while is no more. Constructin has cut off this entrance and made it quite difficult to get to, that is unless you mind hopping the construction hurricane fencing :)

I'm too lazy right now to review this thoroughly. This is as good as a connector/warm-up trail as I have ever been on. It is alot of fun after some rain as this often sees new trail crossings and slick roots and logs.

The Fern Trail has been lopped but it is not dead. Even the original trailhead behind Winn Dixie could be reinstated one day - yes, there is a small strip of green connecting the whole way to where the trail was lopped. We're working with Growth Management and the Governors Market Place Developers toward that goal.
The Blairstone extension construction has lopped the next section but once the road is constructed, the Fern will be reinstated and actually go underneath Blairstone.
In the meantime, you can start at Albertsons for about the same length connection ride (3+ miles) to Tom Brown.

Hate to say it but the upper part behind Winn Dixie is gone.Another shopping center Tallahassee didn't need!Every time I pour concrete at this construcion site it makes me sick that the better part of one of the better trails is gone.Next, the middle section from Park ave to Polos on the Park apts will be cut up for the Blairstone Rd extension.

Good downhill on the western side of the clitoris. Alot of roots and decay on the vulva area more to the west. Overall a good ride if you have a small penis.

The capitol of the tourist state gets another place to shop.
From the Win-Dixie down to the wooden bridge is now cleared for a mall.
There are no trees, no trail, just a big clear, muddy area.
So much for the BEST stretch of trail in Tallahassee......
I'll bet they will put in a tanning salon, what a waste.
You can still ride the part from the wooden bridge out to Tom Brown, but, it's just not the same.
Good luck getting down Park, to the bridge, during rush hour without getting your ass killed.

Great commuter trail. Really fast with quick turns. I started at Tom Brown then took Fern out and back then completed Tom Brown. Great way to add some miles to Tom Brown. Great Fun. Who ever maintains the trails does a great job. Anyone considering commuting to work but afraid of traffic should check this out. Trails are very well marked. Trails are suited for all skill levels. The better you are the faster you will go.

Can be entered from different locations: Behind the Winn-Dixie shopping center on Magnolia Drive, Behind the Albertson's on the Appalachee Parkway or from Tom Brown Park after crossing Weems Rd. It can also be entered from several road crossings and Apartment Complexes along Park Ave

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Tom Brown Park, Cadillac Trail

Review:

Starting from behind Winn-Dixie there is a good drop to a single board stream crossing (Good climb on the return). Several short climbs and drops, then crosses Park Avenue, continues as a fast single track beside a stream, then connects to Tom Brown Park Trail (see reviews) after passing under Capitol Circle. Ride can be continued to Cadillac Trail (see reviews). The Albertson leg is also a good climb up to the shopping center. Nice natural sub-urban woods. Actually a matrix of trials, easy to get lost, but just go in any direction, this is America, your bound to find civilization. A little crowded on the weekends, but most people will wait to let faster riders pass. About 5 miles from Winn-Dixie to Tom Brown.

I like to start at Tom Brown Park, ride the Fern Trail up to the Winn Dixie, then cross over to Albertson's and ride the Albertson's trail back down. It ends up back in the same place.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Tom Brown Park, Maclay Gardens/Red Bug, Munson Hills and the Appalachicola National Forest.

Review:

I used to live in Tally and this is one of my favorite trails. I like to add it on to riding at Tom Brown Park. If you start at TBP, it's fairly flat to start with and then there's a long steady climb up to the Winn Dixie. There's lots of roots and logs and dips and other technical stuff to keep it interesting. If you ride the trail in reverse, it's a really fun downhill. I suggest adding in the Albertson's trail which is just as fun. You can ride it in both directions for some good mileage.

I rode this trail and cried like a baby the whole time.
There were bumps and roots and little roots, my butt was swollen like a pumpkin.
Once was enough, I just sat in the pizza parlor drinking beer and pissing and moaning to anyone who would listen (noone) till my ride came and drove me home. I have no bike handleing skills My brother is ajerk for thinking i did.
