  Crusty Knuckle ATB

Location:

Florida

Nearest Town:

Jacksonville

Directions to Trailhead:

It is at the corner of Beach Blvd. (U.S. 90) and Kernan Blvd. You better be friends with a "crustoid" to find all of the trails. Talk to the folks at Bicycles Etc. for group ride info. Rides leave at 6:30pm during daylight savings time, and night rides at 7:00pm during the winter months in the Publix parking lot at Beach and Kernan.

Trail Description:

There are several loops scattered all over the area. There are currently about 10 miles of singletrack in the area. It is basically flat but rolling terrain, with very tight twisty, rooted singletrack. This trail is rough and not intended for the average beginner. This is a great trail for those who like it technical. Use extreme caution, and prepare to get your butt smashed in!

Trail Length:

10 miles

Singletrack

Have ridden this trail before and it wasn't anything spectacular and no where near the total distance of trails listed above....didn't expect much since we are talking Jax here. Just for kicks in case I missed alot on my first visit, went to Bikes Etc. and asked about trails maps for the network. The guy (kinda snotty) said the trails have been torn up and/or are not ride-able. They didn't have any maps. So, what gives?

Review:

Being relatively new to riding and having ridden Hanna Park several times I was very disappointed with the trail on the East side of Kernan...it goes through thick pine needle bed...like riding in quicksand. Quite a few fun up & downs though. More than you'll get in Hanna. More impessed with the Ryar Swamp trail (don't know the name) but at the turnaround point, the bridges are old and rotting out, non-existent in some parts.

With a little time, work & money (which I unfortunatly don't have) this area could be GREATLY improved. Plan on getting your feet in some swamp water whichever trail you choose. It smells awesome. :) A good effort and nice change of scenery from Hanna.

Whoever takes care of this: thanks for the effort and keep up the good work.

Like I said, I'm a new rider and I could handle most of it no problem... Don't make this your first trail though... Experienced riders and those with "real" mountain-biking experience should steer clear, it probably won't be hard enough for you.

This trail is amazing for what it is. Lots of up and downs (rare for FL), twists, tight curves, water, bridges, etc. All this and it is in the middle of Florida's largest city. For those that get bored by this...move to Colorado and quit your whining. For those in the Jax area...ENJOY! An added bonus, while riding, you feel like you are going through untouched FL jungle. A nice change of pace to city life.

Short and sweet....Please this has got to be a joke. Unrealistic reviews waste people time. Anyone who consisders themeselve more than a novice rider stear clear. Maybe it is good for BMX . I can't speak to that. However for Mountain biking it is a Joke and not a very funny one.
If you are writing a review please take into consideration ohter people take value in the reviews and use them to make the decisions on weather or not they should go ride there.

I recommend this trail for anyone who rides a Mountain bike. This trail offers a mix of challenges for every skill level. For the beginners it offers a challenging root system and a great cardio workout, and for the veteran rider, there are perticular sections of trail that are quit technical if you can find them. Either way I think all levels benefit from this trail. I have to give it a 4 star because there are no Long climbs or decents.

Review:

Being from Ny I an used to riding some pretty steep stuff. I have only moved to Jax a few years ago and I must say that even thought this trail isnt sick " balls to the wall " or anything I love it. It is an good work out either way you look at it and if you have the map or if you know someone who knows where they are going then you are ok.
My favorite trail is Bonzai. To get there Park at the Publix and take the trail head on the West side of beach out to the end and look for the Half Bridge.(thats what I call it) Get up a good amount of speed and go for it. Its really fun. Another good trail to try is the one behing Sun Katcher Apartments. Look out for the Underwear though. Go all the way out and you will find Sketchy Island and a few neat wooden bridges. One that is really challenging. Take the ride back in and take a break. When your done move over to the other side of Kernan ( the east side ) and look for the Downed tree Bridge. This is really a cool concept. Either way, take the trail out and back down the other side and Exit thru the New apartment complex out there. If you dont you will be picking thorns out of you tires for days. Have fun and ride long.

This trail is a cool place to ride every now and then if you are in the area.Me and my friend just made 3 new technical sections for people that aren't lame:
1.a downed tree that broke about three or four feet off the ground,we made a little brige going up it,then flatened it out with a hatchet and some carpet, now it's fun and "technical".
2.modified an original jump by adding a big lip to it,now it can throw you enough to clear a buddy.
3.this one is cool- a little island we found in the ditch we connected with a bridge one both sides to produce a scary crossing,we like to call it "sketchy
island".These bridges are more sturdy than they look,I wiegh 200lbs and have no problems. If you can cross this island with out ever putting you're foot down,(in both directions)than you're as good as us.
Now this trail is a little more "free rider" friendly! If people are calling this trail "technical" they don't ride much.Go around the harder stuff if you're a beginner.

There seems to be an odd love affair with this trail amongst North Floridians, and I was not quite sure why but now that I have ridden the trail I think I get it.

No the trail is not technical, no it is not difficult, and no it is not especially scenic. What the trail does offer is an alternative to Hanna Park...Period!
Therefore, I conclude that there is significant hype around this place because riders don't know anything other than Hanna...Which leads me to my recommendation:
If you have ever ridden anywhere outside of N. Florida you will absolutely hate this place. Do not waste your time. It will bore you to death.
However, if you are a begginer and your understanding of mountain biking is navigating roots and being challanged by soft sand or the occasional "slippery pine needle" then this place will be a good for you.

Finally, for those of you that think this place is a wonderland, please go try some trails outside of N. Fla. Go to N Carolina for a weekend or even Ocala for a day. You gain a whole new appreciation for the sport and understand what mountain biking really is an what it is not. Hanna park is NOT mountain biking. It is trail riding and for enthusiast there is a BIG difference. Cross Country Skiers don't call themselves downhillers or even try to pretend there is a similarity. Why do bike riders.

However you will not be laughing as you ride for an hour in search of anything that remotely resembles mountain biking.
Go North or Go to Ocala but don't go here.

I agree with the guy below. While the trails near Publix are definately not "advanced" by any stretch of the imagination, they aren't for beginners either. Intermediate riders should have a good time here. For an alternative to Hanna Park, this is a great place to ride. If you try the trails and think they're too easy, maybe you should travel the 2.5 hours it takes to reach Reddick/Hardrock each time you want to get a ride in before dark. Better get an early start!

That's funny...I've been riding these trails on and off for a year now and everytime I go (usually with friends who RECOMMEND to go, mainly because Hanna Park has gotten BORING as hell), someone's added a jump, improved the bridges, added a catwalk, and even prepared logs to aid in crossing some of the run-outs. The trail IMPROVES each time I'm out there, not the other way around. For those who feel the trail is boring, fine... DON'T GO BACK! We have no problem with that. We'll keep our filthy little playpen all to ourselves and you can go back to the comfort of Hanna or Ft. Clinch. Reddick, Santos, and Hardrock are superior and a kick-ass blast, but has anyone seen a phosphate pit around here? Anyone???

The section behind Publix--- little 3 foot gator tail hills. Fun if ridden a good pase. There are a few little jumps, and big dirt hill at the end of this trail (20 feet high is big for Jax). This trail is muddy after the rain and has a few little bridges.
Humpty--- about a 3/4 of a mile of gator tail...reminds me of "dragons tail" at oleta. this is a fun trail if ridden fast.
Poundcake--- this trail is FLAT with lots of roots. tight swtichback riding with some mud. Hard to see where the trail goes in some places, but it all will eventually lead to the same place.
HammerTime--- this is the longest trail in the system. See-saw about 1/2 thru...muddy at the turn around point, but then the trail parallels a drainage creek. Tight, up and down. This trail can put some wear on your bike if your not careful.
GENERAL COMMENTS--this trail is fun b/c it is close, free, and has lots of gator-tail.
Can be muddy, and I hate roots. 3 stars b/c it is not the best place to ride in the State, but it is also not the worst!! Do not take a beginning rider to this trail.

Sorry people,I have read the mixed reviews and checked it out for myself. This place IS a joke. The problem is the description at the top of this page is a pure lie.It is not technical, it is not challenging, and the trails are rather disgusting since they are littered with trash. How anyone can rate this place a 5 is beyond me. Yes we all know Jax really has no places to ride, but just because it is a trail in the woods doesn't mean it should get 5 stars. Sorry but I must agree with those that say this place is a dump. They are correct... and if the others would be honest and not give good ratings just because they are embarrased that they ride in some of the easiest terrain in the country, then this website,s review section might actually have some validity. Say what it really is. A nearly flat trail in the woods that is rahter dirty, but if ridden fast can give you a little cardio workout. HERE IS THE REALITY CHECK.. TWO STARS

These reviews are a joke. Expert? come on have you ever really been on a mountain bike trail? This is a trail system that follows a drainage ditch through the swamp!!!! Go ride Reddick or even Santos, and come and call this difficult. I am trashing the thing because it is all talked up on the reviews here. At the same time hats off the the guys building and maintaing the trails. I appericate the creative things they have done with what they have to work with.

Hanna park is faster and has some challanging areas. Pound out a couple laps around the lake there with out stopping, and youll have 12 miles of good riding in.

Summary, Crusty Knuckle is a good variation here in Jacksonville, but dont show up looking for more than a fair ride with a few technical areas. I do like the "see saw". I give the guys building the trails an A+ for effort. I give the trail one tire just for balance and a reality check.

Very good! Well worth the effort. After riding the trails that start right behind the small fenced area on Kernan Blvd. cross the street and look for the trailhead. Take that trail across one dirt road and continue until you come to another dirt road. There, hang a left. At the end of the second dirt road another set of trails begin, complete with signs.
The trails are not the same as the ride in Hanna Park but you definitely get the feeling you're traveling through several ecosystems. Be careful at the wooden bridges, we went when the wood was slightly damp and my bike slipped out from under me. I ended up waist deep in black mucky water. It was worth it for the spectators though. You should also take the time to ride Hanna Park in Atlantic Beach, just don't leave trash in the woods.

O.K., I've found the other trails, and they do add up to @ 10 miles of great singletrack. Hammerhead and Root Canal, through Ryals' Swamp, are fantastic, appropriately named, and certainly worth the effort to find. To anyone coming here for the first time, I recommend coming to ride with the group on Thursday evenings at 6:15, or with someone who knows the area. The trails are somewhat spread out (for instance, the lightly-travelled "bmx-like" trail named 007 is almost 3 miles further west on Beach Blvd!), but worth your time and effort. Unfortunately, "progress" will eventually destroy some of the trails built along Beach Blvd., but with on-going improvements, the remaining trails, as well as newer trails to come for the area, will be better than ever. Now, get out from behind the monitor, get off your ass and ride!

Ft. Clinch or Hanna are your only choices close by.

Review:

The area as a whole is certainly more fun than Hanna, with the trails being a stong-intermediate at best. The two new "bridges" that have been fashioned are very clever, and the jump near the beginning on the east side of Kernan adds a little "fear-factor" for the less-skilled rider as well. Synopsis? : The rolling hills on both sides are great fun as long as your at speed; the one large carpeted hill is a leg-churning endever; the tight areas between a few sections of trees are interesting if you're into them a bit too fast (my left shoulder still aches); and I didn't find the roots to be all that much of a major headache to maneuver around considering what STATE we're in! By now, I've ridden the trails that I could find on both sides of Kernan more than 25 times, and I'm having some difficulty believing there are 10 miles of trail out there. Though it feels more like 4-to-5, the ride is definitely worth the time it takes to find it, especially if your in or around J'ville. Yes, the creek it runs along on the east-side is not the cleanest, but the blame goes directly to the city of Jacksonville. Just don't fall into it, and you'll be fine!
CUDOS to those that have made and try hard to maintain these trails. When you ride, take notice that the newer additions were all made of degradable material and will make no impact on the natural surroundings. The riders here also seem to take out what they bring in, so please respect the area and do the same. Peace!

This trail has its strenghts and weaknesses. First the good. Maintenance is decent, the guys that live near here seem to do a good job. There are several areas of whoop-dees and a few small(6-7') sprint climbs and drops, one drops right narrowly through two trees-fun, and some technical rooty areas. The bridges are narrow, which is fun, but one is a little suspect in strength. Some areas with small logs are not bad to ride through also. The drawbacks in my opinion(and my buddy's) are the sewage infested mud and water that is often close by. My buddy wheelied through a patch and he smelled something awful! The water in the creek is not much of an improvement so stay on the bridges, or you'll never get near a girl again. Roots are everywhere, while technical, they do get a little old after a while. Nothing really challenging, but certainly worth your time if you live in the area. It's more challenging than pansy Hannah Park anyway, and its hard to have a bad trail. Really a 2 1/2, but I'm gonna round up.
